Smithey, just FYI that's a really crude simplification and, dare I say, erroneous interpretation of the Schrodinger's Cat problem.

@Cor, I never claimed it's what the cat paradox is all about however I can use certain aspects of a well known topic in order to explain my line of reasoning, while in the box the cat can't be proven dead or alive hence I used that aspect in order to explain my reasoning, it's as accurate as it gets when serving as an analogy to my line of reasoning, it is not what the paradox is about nor did I claim such a thing...

@ Doomf, Why do people believe that is pretty much the same question as why do people believe in god, one that has been discussed many times - the answer is IMO because we have a need to be special, because we have a vivid imagination, because we want a higher purpose, because we enjoyed fairy tales when we were little, because most of us are sheep, because dealing with death is hard... All of the above, depending on people...
Simplified answer - human nature... Why ? Because we are human

Well, religions and fear of death/searching for a point in everything are indeed tightly connected, however paternal aliens don't actually give any afterlife/fairness guarantee like religions do. They don't exactly cover the same part of human fears or culture. So no, it's not exactly the same thing, I think.

However, the growing popularity of those "non-religious religion substitutes" brings to me to a point: do humans really need to believe in something? The majority of them, I mean. Believing in God can bring comfort or a feeling of higher sense in life; believing in aliens can bring... umm. Yeah. Nothing.

(Of course by "believing in aliens" I mean the idea of Aliens being paternal figures to eartlings - not a suspicion that there might be other forms of sentient life in the universe.)

you talked about aliens being more clever, more evolved.

for religious people, it might be the afterlife which is important, but for "economists", it's the growth at all cost they fantasize about. maybe something aliens may bring with their super technology?

actually, I think we could make a division between spirituality and materialism. alien technology represents the dream of a better life for materialist people.

there is life out there, simply because the universe is too big for there not to be.

as for little green men... probably not. more likely it would look like the lovechild of a dalek and a angular fish.

Is this opinion or fact? If fact, I'd love to see the proof, obviously better than "the universe is too big for there not to be"

Then humans are out and extraterrestrials are in. Although 2 boobs is still better than 4 boobs if the 2 boobs come with a set of tentacles.

I do not find anything on the interwebs offensive, no worries

Also, you can't respond "Schrodinger's cat" to somebody asking for proof for little green men.

Face it - there's no proof. Zero. Nihil. None. It's up to everybody to have his/hers personal belief on that matter, until a proof of the thesis being correct or incorrect is found.

Theories are not always right, for example Einstein's Static Universe which was proven wrong. So if someone has a theory that there are aliens out there, I don't have anything against it, unless he starts considering it a fact (in which case I ask for proof and get none).

I consider myself an "alien agnostic". There may be sentient life forms, they may not be. who knows. Right now there's no proof, so we can just fantasize. What surprises me however is that so many people picture hypothetical alien races as some sort of paternal figures for oblivious earthlings - something I consider "religion 2.0".

@Cor hey check HCM

How can our petty science proove any thing that is milions of light years away?. See,have existed for 1 milion years and our earth has 4.5 billion years on its back...
Maybe when we look at those extrasolar planets, there might be life now but till that "Current" light arrives earth, they might already be dead and vice versa,we might be dead.

There is life outside because its only logical to believe in that,we are not special.Whether life can be more intelligent than us,humans, that is a question I have been wondering a long time.

Can a life form be more intelligent than us humans?
More intelligence does not mean more technological development or even an evolutionary development. It could imply more tech development but it is not equal to it.
There are other factors that contribute to tech development, like wars, dieseases or social unrest,at least at Humans.
The real question is,would any life form as clever(or more clever) as Humans behave any differently than Humans?
Wars happen because we are intelligent...

One has really to know, those green guys dont exist. It is impossible to travel for millions of light years just to come here and visit us...If they existed, and they were indeed technologically superior, they would have anhiliated us already or would have speed up our internal turmoil.Self destruction in our society is quite possible, but it would leave our earth inhabitable (Thermonuclear war).

Consdiering that we have H bombs,i would doubt they would begin a war with us...
Anyway,they dont exist.
You know guys,if you lived 50 yers ago and saw B2 stealth bomber, what would you say? UFO?I'd call them UFO's.

Its not human nature. There is more to it than nature. Its a kind of defense mechanism of the mind to prevent suicide, imo.

If you think objectively, life has no real purpose, its just a cycle of a cycle of a cycle...
If it ends,nothing really happens.

That's easy. If an extraterrestrial life has the means to perform an interstellar travel or even travel between the planets without relying on some biologically built-in capabilities to survive in vacuum, then it has to be more advanced and thus most likely more intelligent than us. After all we've never gone further than the Moon (or maybe even the Earth orbit, in case the Moon landing is faked).

Why should they have a human psychology and inevitably want to destroy us? Of course there could be no intelligent alien life - although the probability for this is extremely low - but if there is there is nothing indicating that it will have reasoning similar to ours. Stanislaw Lem has one very nice though on the matter: "We are only seeking Man. We have no need of other worlds. We need mirrors. We don't know what to do with other worlds."

They PROBABLY consider them peaceful because it seems awkward that if a race who would bother venturing so deep into space and seeking contact with other lifeforms, would do so for the sake of exterminating it.

There's only one race in the universe who would be capable of such evil, and that's humans.

"We found life! I repeat, we found life!"

"Good job son! Now hit that nuke button!"

What I find ridiculous though is assuming that they would come with the intention of solving all our screwups. In which case they probably WOULD just nuke us. Oh the irony.
