I love both Odysseia and Ulysses. I credit most of it to the awesome translator not Homer though.

Ah, I see, I may have totally said I liked him back when I was young and stupid and had only read his short story, Evelynne (or however he spelled that name.)
It's also possible I respect a writer for his technical capabilities (like getting a coherent narrative through stream-of-consciousness,) but totally do not enjoy his style. I have seen good uses of the technique, though. Oh, well, good to see I'm not being crucified on the spot.

EDIT: agreed with Joonas, in general I usually prefer Dutch translations from Russian over the English ones, because English translators seem to be completely intent to butcher it and make it seem like 19th century archaic English from what is perfectly understandable Russian.

We've very similar likes, so, if you've not yet, you might give this man's work a read. William Morris. His work was supposedly an inspiration for Tolkien. Go to the Project Gutenberg website for his work and that of many others.

For fun, mostly WH40k stuff.  It's mindless, violent fun.  A nice contrast to the retainer agreements, deeds, and motions for custody I read for work.

All sorts, though the current one always depends on the amount of free time I have. Folk tale anthologies(Japanese/Chinese/Scottish/English/French/Hungarian/Irish/German etc...) dominated my early childhood, then came HP, and with it my first tastes of fantasy, which led me to LotR,(Silmarillion, Hobbit included) + a couple of no-name oneshots, like "The Isle of Time Lost"(not sure about the title, read it in another language) by Sylvana Gandolfi + the Circle of Magic series, and a couple more I don't remember) Squeezed between these, I familiarised myself with Pippi Longstocking and Emil of Lönneberga. Then came my detective novel phase, with Sherlock Holmes, Miss Marple and Poirot, followed I think, by nearly all the famous writers of my native country, after whom, I turned my eye to international authors. Nowadays, I read anything and everything that catches my fancy, often in multiple languages at once. For example, I devoted the past 2-3 weeks or so to Discworld, but I'll probably move on soon. It's a pity how short a series Discworld is... Oh well, I'll prolly survive

As a child I used to love reading my mom's Earth's Children books (Clan of the Cave Bear etc) and that started an interest in herbs and ancient remedies (no I haven't poisoned anyone, yet).  Now I'm obsessed with the 'di Medici.

'The House of Medici, its rise and fall' by Christopher Hibbert and 'Catherine de Medici' by Leonie Frieda are two of my favorite books.  Also anything on the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, The French Wars of Religion and the Catholic League.  I also love Maria Bellonci's 'Lucrezia Borgia', but find it hard to read as she doesn't keep things in a chronological order and it gets exasperating.

I also have a 'thing' for illuminated manuscripts after being bought a 'A History of Illuminated Manuscripts' by Christopher De Hamel.  And even managed to get myself a copy of the Duke du Berry's Book of Hours.

I've read all the Bronte's and Austen's.  As most English schoolgirls have I guess.  Anne Bronte's 'Agnes Grey', is my favorite and of course Charlotte's 'Jane Eyre'.  Favorite Jane Austen would have to be 'Mansfield Park'.  I have all the Austen books too.

Failing that I'm totally happy curled up on the sofa with a James Lee Burke (Dave Robicheaux crime thriller).

Right now I'm reading through a Dragonlance trilogy on the Goblin Tribes, written from the perspective of the not-very-intelligent goblins , though the author still makes it rather interesting to read and goes into a lot of detail about all the odd little habits, customs, and the belief system of the goblins.

YES! I totally agree, OD!

Recently finished "Sputnik sweetheart" by Murakami and I enjoy his vivid style.
Currently reading "memoires of an absent person" by Fernand Auwera and I must say I find this book totally lacklustre and so typically Belgian and depressing I probably will never finish it and drop it for "snow crash."

I like horror stories most of all. Poe and Lovecraft are probably my favorite writers. I also like bizzare stories, all the way from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to the Naked Lunch. Other favorite books of mine, include: Metamorphosis, 1984, On the Road, Our Lady of Darkness, Dracula, Still Life with a Woodpecker, Jonathan Livingston the Seagull, Silmarillion, Giaour, Faust, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Great God Pan, the King in Yellow, Carmila, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Divine Comedy, and probably a forget many others...

I also enjoy reading books talking about folklore, traditions and superstitions from all over the world. I enjoy reading about unexplained phenomena, urban legends, mythologies and all that.

Currently am reading the book I ordered by K.J. Parker (the folding knife) (the colours in the steel and that scavenger sequel should drop by next week.)
It's basically "There will be blood" and "Citizen Kane" intermingled if it happened in not-Rome. Not-Rome is like Rome but it isn't.

I'm not reading anything at the moment, because I don't have much time for it between college and arguing on the Internet. I tried to read "Reflections on the Revolution in France", but having gotten a third of the way through it, I got enough of an impression to not want to read any more. I also recently read the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books (which were excellent).

Finished "the red cavalry" ("Konarmiya" in Russian) by Babel' and I'm a third way through Evgeniy Zamyatin's "We." The required literature so far is enjoyable, though I dread having to read some social realism ("Cement" a book that's been only translated once in 1929, which I have to magically conjure up from somewhere)

Also, got some books by K.J. Parker via the interwebs and I enjoyed the folding knife a lot.

When I first read it six years ago, I thought it was the worst book in the series because it had less action than all the others. Having reread it, it's now among my favorite books.
You'll enjoy Master and Margarita.

Both are a high quality reading matter, especially the first one.
"God-Emperor of Dune" is where the series become really boring for me - and I don't mean the relative lack of action. The writing becomes too slow and monotonous, the ideas of the author - controversial at best and the intrigue - next to non-existent. I barely read through "The Heretics of Dune" (out of stubbornness and hope that something interesting may actually happen... after some time... before the end) and "Chapterhouse: Dune" still waits to be finished - and it will wait for quite a long time. The very first Dune is deservedly a classic in sci-fi but after that everything becomes predictable to the point of being annoying and the characters are more or less copy-pasted versions of some earlier prototypes. For me, the interesting part of Dune ends roughly with the defeat of the Harkonnen and the revelation that Bene Tleilax are some daft religious zealots.
