Phoenix ... not really phoenix

Ok so you all know how a Phoenix looks, or at least you think you know, or I should better say you so though it looks, but from where it came to where it's now.... a long story. Many misconceptions and maybe alteration form stories to stories changed it ... quite a lot.

Ok, so this is how really a Phoenix looks. It has the body of a lion, the head of a crocodile and 12 wings. It has all colors like a rainbow.

Secrets Of Enoch 12:1 And I looked and saw other flying elements of the sun, whose names are Phoenixes and Chalkydri, marvellous and wonderful, with feet and tails in the form of a lion, and a crocodile’s head, their appearance is empurpled, like the rainbow; their size is nine hundred measures, their wings are like those of angels, each has twelve, and they attend and accompany the sun, bearing heat and dew, as it is ordered them from God.

I found an image that fits it mostly... hope you get the idea.

It would make a great champion for Lizard-based faction under different name, Tiamat maybe

Back to topic: well, nowadays concept on phoenix might come from Chinese based Phoenix, well in exception true Chinese Phoenix is a Fire-Red-Featherd Peacock.

You know long tail feather, fiery, "beautiful" in some way

I would not buy the game if the Phoenix looked like that.

I think a Heroes game that was a 100% faithful to all the original mythological creatures would be a very boring Heroes game.

As Kitten already stated, why assume that the Hebrew version of the pheonix as the true one? There are always the Egyprian, Chinese and Greek versions (and as a Greek, I have to point out that pheonix is the greek term, the root word being phoenos, which means deep red, scarlet-besides, this is the version where the pheonix is reborn from its ashes). The version you mention is an intriguing one but evidently not the one used.

The concept of the phoenix-like creatures is not narrowly Egyptian or even Indo-European so there is no "true" version of the birdie, even in one particular mythology. The Phoenix is Heroes II for example is very close to one of the depictions of the so called Jar Ptica (literally Ember Bird or more lossely - Fire Bird) in the Slavic mythology but there is another depiction which adds a peacock tail. You get to choose which one is "true".

In ancient Arabian folklore, the ghūl (Arabic: غول , literally demon)[5] dwells in burial grounds and other uninhabited places. The ghul is a devilish type of jinn believed to be sired by Iblis.

The Arabian ghoul is a desert-dwelling, shape shifting demon that can assume the guise of an animal, especially a hyena. It lures unwary travellers into the desert wastes to slay and devour them. The creature also preys on young children, robs graves, drinks blood, steals coins and eats the dead, taking on the form of the one they previously ate.

There are, however, rather fewer myths which speak of the rebirth thing.

Uhuh... So you only buy a game that's 100% faithful to streamlined modern high fantasy crap.

On the contrary, if one game tries to approach a more traditional folklore/mythological style, then it would be the one game which is different and not boring. Well, at least that's my opinion.

Man, I so wanna see Ghouls just as they are supposed to be. Not that H6's Ghouls aren't cool, but the original Ghouls from Arabic beat even Vampires in coolness.

Cool, cool, cool, stupid, cool, cool, stupid, cool. Oh god, I have started sounding like Nightterror. Well, someone has to fill in that gap so if the pay's good, I'm up for it.

There are many myths that speak about fire based birds
as Zenofex have there owne firebird  in my country we call it "Pták (bird) Ohnivák (cannot be properly translated but it has to do whit fire (oheò))"

The cahgnge of Pheonix to blue in H6 opens the oportunity for such creatures tu appear

How many of those mythical firebirds include the "born from the body of the parent" bit?

The rebirth part is common but not universal and these "fire birds" tend to resurrect themselves, yes. It's not an unique feature of the "phoenix" from some particular folklore.

In a TBS game with different mechanics, "You are what you eat" could be very fun. Because a unit can usually only kill weaker units, it would be tricky to use right. Or your shapeshifter would get weaker and weaker. Using buffs, positioning, terrain, etc could reverse this process.

Another good candidate would be Archon Ultra ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiDFjRysA_c ) has a piece called Shapeshifter which morphs into its opponent. This results in a mirror battle. Boring !
