Where did the Old-Fashioned RPG go?
With the end of my exams on the horizon and nearly two weeks of time to kill between the start of the new semester, I did what I often do. Search for a videogame to kill that time with. Not realy wanting to replay one I already own for the umpteenth time, I went looking for a new RPG.
And I have come to the 'shocking' conclusion that old-fashioned RPG's are surprisingly hard to come by nowadays.
Now by old-fashioned RPG's I understand the kind of turn-based, story driven RPG's like Final Fantasy was up untill and including IX. Or the first two Paper Mario's, Golden Sun or Skies of Arcadia. But I usualy do not like the "muckin' about on a battlefield and completing an arbitrary button-sequence" style of fighting as often seen in the Tales of series.
Perhaps I am searching wrong, but I have not seen anything of the like be released in the past few years, that I do not already own.
Do the friendly members of HC have any tips for me?
@ Polyglot from the other thread which will be deleted soon:
I already own the original spellforce and the sequel, I also own all monkey island games and the first 2 broken swords and Jedi Academy. So those would not work. In regards to Elder Scrolls, Baldurs Gate and Jade Empire, I am rather looking for TB-JRPGS. Not WRPGS.

So what you're looking for is basically a turn-based, story-driven JRPG?
Have you tried the Earthbound game(s?) They're supposedly pretty good.

Yes, they supposedly are, but they are virtually impossible to get hold of outside Japan and I don't read Japanese. + I don't own a SNES and it never got released on Wii-virtual console.

Err, I figured they would've released an English version on the Virtual Console by now, but then you'd have to own a Wii.
Which types of game platforms do you have, BTW?

Actually I do.
I got a PC, obviously, a PS3-2-1, a Wii, a Gamecube, N64 and a DS. I might buy a 3DS in the future if something good gets released, like the new Paper Mario which supposedly is in the works.

Hmm, how about Cthulhu Saves the World, available on Steam (or so I've heard).

Good suggestion. However I've tried that before and it is way too corny for my taste. There is only so much bad humor a man can take before it gets annoying.

I am not sure if this one fits the description, but it's TB with a "hint" of RPG....and I LOVE the damn game, always have always will
In my opinion, it contains everything I need in a game.
Check it out...
Edit I've said it before, This is a game I really would love to see revived.

If you don't mind early-90s-graphics, this fits your description perfectly.

Seems more like a WRPG than a JRPG Zenofex. But thanks for the tip.
Also thanks to Sphere and Avi for the tips, I'll look into that.
@Acu
I'm not gonna try Final Fantasy XIII. I don't like the turn they took somewhere between X and XII for the battle system. I own XII and I loved the story, but I got so fed up with the battles that it's been gathering dust for a long time now

Days of Dawn, old school rpg
We at Bumblebee., an indie-development team, are currently working on "Days of Dawn", an rpg-title which can easily be described as old-school. With influences ranging from Final Fantasy and ChronoTrigger over Secret of Mana even to titles like Bards Tale, you could call it's look a kind of Seiken Densetsu HD. Take yourself a look at our development blog at http://www.daysofdawn.com/ - we will be posting screenshots and first sketches in the coming week. Would be very happy to meet you there. If you miss old-school rpg, this should become a title for you.
Regards,
Tassilo

Did you try Shining Force? I love it! Took me a week to finnish the second part without Easter Eggs and secrets, so I replayed it again and again... It requires Genesis to be played, but it is worth it. (btw, it's from 1994, so the graphics are not perfect)

I also think Shining Force is the greatest RPG game of all times. Worked one year to create a conversion for Heroes 3, failed because complexity.

Ok. How about Last Scenario? A really good game from 2007 - good story, turn-based RPG, good graphics, but limited number of characters.

Well the first are not really turnbased but are still good jrpgs
1: Star ocean the last hope for ps3. (x-box / ps3)
2: Tales of symphonia + Sequel. (GQ)
You could also try
3: valkyria chronicles (ps3?)
4: White knigt chronicles <- might feel a bit more like FF XII and for me it got boring really fast.(ps3)
5: Disgaia (alot more like FF tactics but (PS3)
6: The Last Remnant (Steam)
