Sound stutters and freezes up Heroes III and causes a lock-up crash
On Windows 7 64-bits, using an X-Fi Titanium Fatality Pro, driver v.6.0.1.1348, I was intermittently experiencing sound stutters that froze up Heroes III and required me to hit ctrl-alt-del to exit to my desktop. Somehow I resolved the issue and I was so pleased to have done so that I thought I might be able to help some other unfortunate player who has encountered the same trouble.
I did all of the following: reinstalled Windows 7, reinstalled the game (Heroes III Complete, which has Heroes III and its two expansion packs), reinstalled soundcard drivers, and installed the Creative Labs Alchemy software.
I do NOT think it is necessary to reinstall Windows 7 or to reinstall the game. A reinstallation of sound or soundcard drivers MIGHT do the trick, but if you are using a Creative Labs soundcard with Windows 7, or Windows Vista, you might need to install Alchemy. Then you’ll need to open the software and allow Alchemy to enable Heroes III. I did that by doing the following:
1. Click Add.
2. Type in Heroes 3 in the game title
3. Click Use Game Path
4. Type in the proper game path (If you don’t know it, find the Heroes3 application file in the Heroes III directory; right-click the file; click Properties; on the General tab, highlight the path to the right of “Location”; copy and paste the path to the Use Game Path space in Alchemy.
5. Click OK to place Heroes 3 into the Installed Games side of Alchemy.
6. In the Installed Games, click Heroes 3, then click the arrows in the middle of the screen to transfer Heroes 3 to the side that says “ALchemy-enabled games”
I apologize for not being more direct and specific. Maybe someone can make a more authoritative reply. I tried to make the title of this thread include reasonable search words for this issue, which is that sound stutters and locks up the game. Though I have resolved the issue for myself, I’m still not sure what caused it. Maybe Windows 7 64-bits, maybe the X-Fi soundcard, maybe the soundcard drivers.

BUMP I spent many hours trying to fix this issue and am out of luck. Going to have to buy Heroes II if I can't find a solution.
I think the issue might be with the sound as I get the stutter of sound repeating and then the crash.
