Yeah, you have to be careful about what to go for. I had zero problems with RTR because I did the tried and true; I made a "mirror image RTW and make the modded game separate". I was able to play both w/o problems. I've found that you need to read a bit in the mod-threads, to see the do's and don'ts.
The last screen looks like the crusader campaign. I had trouble with all four of those Med II camps but the America's was the worst for me. Having the European powers arriving out of the blue is hard to defend against. Well that and arrows against muskets. But it does give a player a good idea of what the Indians faced
I think Med 1 was my favorite (after my brother showed me how to get rid of those crusades)...I loved the music too.

You had problems with the Teutonic campaign? How is that even possible?

Agreed, the first Medieval has the best music in the series, not a single bad theme. Rome is very close behind though.

The unit detail is static, but I adore the models and animation (sword models and spears are greatly improved) Problem is the insane loading times, and costs? I start with 5,000 gold, and a single unit costs over a 1,000, not to mention buildings ranging from 1,000-12,000 (turn one) and mercenraries from 3,000-5,000 .
Overall an insanely good mod, but the drawbacks greatly reduce the 'enjoyment' and playability.
Loading times are directly proportional to your ram. With 2 gigs of ram the load times are long only on starting the game and turns go by at a reasonable pace.
The amount of gold shouldn't be a problem, you have an army in the start, just go kill everyone and become rich.
Or if you're the casse, disband army and enjoy the excellent trade benefits with independents.
EB is a lot harder than vanilla RTW but if you're decent in vanilla, EB is quite okay, I find even EB easy(German, Armenia, Casse, Saka Rauka victories on Very Hard/Normal).
A successfull EB game with the more difficult factions requires a lot more tactical skills than RTW, you'll find yourself facing odds like this a lot.
And if you can manage battles like this.
You will end up like this

Dammit, I only ever once got there when I sent a 5 star general with 5 praetorians to conquer the scythians. Most of my other rtw games focus around the mediterranean.
EDIT: I played RTW, before I had an internet connection. Real!

They are female warriors found to the north of the Scytians. Amazonians (or Amazons) are neutral and you can't play with them. They are also hard to defeat so play carefuly.

It's just conquering everywhere around with your starting army since the horse archers own everything in vanilla aside from heavily armoured infantry which is not present before late romans.
But it's much more entertaining in EB where you might actually have to use querilla tactics at times instead of just rushing all enemies and shooting till they die.

One thing I adored about RTW is the mercenaries, there weren't that many different types (compared to other Total wars) in each area, but you could build a decent army with just mercs in any terrain, which was very useful especially when your knee deep in gauls and thousands of miles from a city that can produce reinforcements or to replenish the dead. Not just that, when I had a few groups of legionaries missing (dead) I often bought barbarian warbands, these I used as arrow fodder and city breachers (they're tough and move easily, and can easily be replaced, unlike legionaires)
I just wish that Medieval shared this, I like that I can hire dismounted knights, or germanic horsemen, but I'd much rather prefer quantity over quality regardless of cost (within reason ). (one of the reasons why I love calling crusades, get to hire ****ing tough units and a full armies worth, for a pissant sum)
Edit: Holy Land battle results: (venice vs Mongolian horde)
Alexandria: Men deployed: V = 1200, M = 1070.
Results : Heroic Victory: 52%-98%
Cairo: (almost the same numbers)
Heroic victory: 67%- 100%
That's 2 out of 8 mongolian armies defeated, trying to mount a relief force took me a while, because France, is pressing on in western italy, and Hungarians and turks are assaulting my Hungarian and Byzantine provinces. Anyway, going to dispatch them next turn, I hope to god that they arrive in time
Since I never expected the enemy to mount such an incursion I never upgraded the defenses of these two towns, and now that they're m last bastions, they're holding out pretty well, (my tactic is to put a **** load of italian spear malitia in the gate and hold my ground 'til the horseman cease to be, not very glamourous, but sure as hell chest pounding to watch a whole army of horseman trying to breach your spear walls)

Installing Shogun 2: Total War, this is going to be sweeet!. (not sure why I need steam for a hard-copy though )
Is it me or is that a 25 gigabyte update?!?!
Yep it's 25.3 GBs, is this, natural?!??!
Edit: Downloading Medieval 2: Total War Third age mod. I'm going to Trotskify this game and incite civil war in every land, myself as arnor against gondor, elves can cluster **** each other, and going to get the orcs to eat each other, mhmm.
Edit 2: The mod is legendary, I'd pay without hesitation if it were a DLC, very well crafted. I especially like the changes made to archery that units actually 'draw' the bow with an arrow notched as well as the bow bending when drawn (playing as Arnor at the moment)
