Unorthodox HOMM Strategies?

Things you do while playing HOMM just for the hell of it.  Maybe it's not even the best strategy, but you do it anyway, mainly because you've already played HOMM a thousand times already and you needed a new wrinkle just to add to the challenge.

Here's mine:

Never build or upgrade creature dwellings.  Ever.

Whatever creatures are available from the start of the game are the ones you're stuck with.  So if your town only supplies gremlins and gargoyles, grems and gargs are all you recruit from that town.

Any other creatures you recruit must either be "wandering" creatures already residing on the map or those that can be recruited from map-based dwellings. (No recruiting any creatures from captured enemy towns either!)

Yes, this knuckleheaded strategy causes the computer to kick my *ss 50% of the time, even on the easiest difficulty settings.  But playing with a diplomat like Cyra, I have prevailed many times, and often with legions of creatures at my disposal by the gane's end.

Any cockamamie tactics you like to try to liven things up?

Versus the AI I usually go for "themed armies"...

iE Stronghold without Rocs&Behemoths, Rampart without Elves&Dragons, Castle without Monks&Angels...

Your main hero is stronger than the AIs anyways, so you can win with those armies kinda easy.

---

You use the OP diplomacy skill but build no dwellings? Isn't that the same result in the end?

Money, money!

It's very simple.
Sell all of your resources at the end of each turn. Build with what you get before you have to sell it.

Why use weird tactics when the most effective way for challenge is not saving/reload even once.

I like to only buy heroes of the town alignment I'm using (whenever possible) and to use heroes that suck.

What's that, Gem? Your speciality is First Aid? Come aboard! We're all happy to have you!

It's not an effective strategy for winning, but it's great for having fun, and you can still beat the AI with it.

I suppose unortodox strategy would be to have a very slow creature in the main army and main hero without logistic or pathfinding.

Give the AI a headstart. So press end turn without moving or building anything for a week or 2 depending on your skills and the map.

I once gave the AI a headstart of 336 days (12 months) in H4. Won easily anyway though, but the AI in h3 does better than in H4.

I think I even made a topic about it once but basicly: choose town, then choose the worst creature. That's your only creature type allowed in any army ever EXEPT the creatures you get from reqruiting new heroes and upgraded version of your underdog.

So for example, you take necropolis, you have to play walking dead + zombies. However you can also use a few skeletons and wights at the beginning of the game from secondary heroes.

Another one I currently use just because im too lazy is "play like an utter beginner" ruleset.

1. Use only 1 hero in whole game.

2. The hero must be "just cool". It must either look cool on have cool specialty and it cannot be that useful of a main hero. For example "inferno" specialty qualifies as "cool". It's not useful at all but it is kinda cool looking spell. Crag hack is not cool in this sense.

3. You must use quick combat in at least 95% of the battles vs map. For computer heroes and towns it is allowed to have actual battles.

Creatures aren't really that important the important thing is the Hero, in my opinion, with the right set of primary and secondary skills you can lead almost any army to victory over the AI.
