Enjoy HOMM4... this may be the last...

3DO is in financial crisis. If HOMM4 does not generate the projected revenue in the next two quarters... it's really game over.

Well that's possible but quite unlikely. 3DO's CEO, Trip Hawkins was formerly an EA man. Word has it that he was ousted from EA. But he did leave EA a very rich man. Over $200 million in his saddle.

As for Activision, they're not exactly into RPG market. Even if they intend to, one wouldn't consider HOMM a solid candidate for the task either. The HOMM and M&M series doesn't really have a strong, credible cast and storyline like Ultima (Origin was acquired by EA). In fact, 3DO is dumping the old world of M&M and HOMM to start a new one coz the story between the two titles were inconsistent. Strange thing is, there's barely any coverage on storylines at the titles' respective websites.

Plus the fact that there aren't any other credible, potential blockbuster titles in 3DO's product pipeline in the near future, things are certainly gloomy for 3DO.

Hmmm... How's the stock market coming for 3DO? Any deals with Microsoft yet? Well, if it's the end then I hope some company would resurect this amazing game. Why are you telling this bad news to us anyway? Not saying that we don't wanna hear it but why are you so concerned with HOMM series? Are you an avid player too? Well thanks for the tip and good luck on your shares!

Up, yep - the most loved man on fatbabies.com... But it got nothing to do with him - If they bad - I guess then can just sell the NWC studio to someone interrested. Infogrames?

HOMM does not need so much background story, don't know about MM. I feel HOMM more like strategic than RPG game. Also HOMM allows people to create maps and play random maps much more easier than any other game. As for Activision not in RPG... They are kings in FPS genre for PC and Extreme sport genre for consoles... But HOMM will not hurt. Oh well I really don't know afterall.

Interplay are the publishers (at least for USA and official). Bioware are only the developers. Actually there was some lawsuit between them cause of some rpg game - Neverwinter Nights. Back in 1996 NWC were publishers by themselves - but later got bought buy that mastodont 3DO.

really?

I knew that NWC started out on its own in the '80's - JVC was the founder, and now is the president - but I didn't know that it was so recently that they joined with 3DO.

Wait...that can't be right. I'm looking at my Heroes II box, and I know that that came out in 1995, right?

OOOoooh, but this is interesting: on the back, it shows not only NWC's and 3DO's logos, but also that of PopTop (or is it TopPop?) Software. I wonder what this means?

Interplay is also in financial crisis so I don't see that happening. If they go to MS, the next Heroes (V) would probably be xbox exclusive or come out on PC six months after the xbox version. ugh

Thanx.

Well, I've started playing since the birth of the mother of all M&Ms (as a matter of fact, mother of all 3DO games). Yep, on my very 1st PC, which was a 4.77mhz XT and a green monochrome monitor. In all the M&M and HOMM series, M&M 8 is the only one which I did not complete. Guess I should qualify as a fanatic.

I do own 3DO shares (I'm sure my nick here tells it). Figured, if Trip were to pay $2.70 per share for the 15 million of common stocks he purchased off the open market, I see no reason to turn down the offer to partake in the company at $0.60. But it was strictly an investment decision as well as belief in the HOMM series, nothing sentimental.

I do however, as a player hope as much for the survival of the HOMM series and do not wish for it to end up in the graveyard like what EA did to the Ultima series. Afterall, these are some of the good things that I look forward to in life. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

The acquistion rumour abt 3DO and Microsoft is nothing more than juz that. But I have to add, it'll do good for both the company as well as the games under its belt as we can all see that the titles churned out from the 3DO factory are quite lacking in the graphics department.

12 days and counting...

Personally, I only play campaigns (including those I download from the net) but hardly the single or random maps. IMO, good storyline does motivate and add depth to the game play, even for strategy games. PvP, however adds another dimension to the game where storyline goes out of the window.

Vivendi now owns majority of Interplay. Many key developers in Black Isle has left the company since. The way I see it, they're going down.

The thought of a game of PC descent relased from xBox 1st is... quite unthinkable. Can't rule that out from happening but I'm sure glad to know that Microsoft din take that path for Dungeon Siege.

It's happened before..

Obi Wan, Halo, Oddworld, SW Knights of the Old Republic to name a few.. These are examples of games that were coming to PC, but then got changed to either Xbox exclusive or Xbox first. There will be more instances of this. Some developers have stopped developing games on PC to focus exclusively on Xbox (though I forgot which ones.. Was the company making Oddworld one?). I don't really want to see Heroes 5 on Xbox, but if it happens, I wouldn't surprise me.

You are quite right to think that such game will be not good enough on TV - why - well first - resolution is 640x480 - even that XBOX support double resoultsions (not sure though) - TV is limited to 600 scanlines - and it'll be hard to read all the text or infos. Of course this can be fixed - by changing the graphics and artistic style - bigger fonts - colors which are looking good on TV. But then It'll be little quirky with the pad to go around and play the game - but it may actually works. I was playing first Battle Isle without mouse - but with keys - and wasn't so bad. Also Gamecube versions of Heroes1/2 were not so bad for selecting your move path (but the AI sucked a lot).

With XBOX in future they say you can download files, stuff, play your own mp3 music... so on....

The truth is that they believe, and maybe they are right that XBOX sales will go beyond PC sales (in terms of software - video games/PC games - not in hardware).

I've got only PS2/Dreamcast at home, my roommate got XBOX too - and I saw HALO - yes it's good enough - but I realy preffer playing FPS games on PC... the same as strategic ones... But hey where is the HALO for PC - nowhere? - right!

Hmm.... I think that the X-box will be the "poor man's computer." or at least the lazy one. There is no assembly required.. you just plug it in and you're good to go. It has none of the versatility that a PC has. With the PC you can not only play Heroes of Might and Magic, but consult with other people about it (messageboards) get hints and tips when you are stuck (gaming strategies online.. free!) see creative artwork and fan-fictions online to enhance your gaming experience (Communities and websites) as well as being able to download patches and even modifications on the original game! Heck, you are even able to edit the game yourself in some cases (Unreal tournament, Quake III etc.) and the editing aspect is becoming more and more popular. That is just something you can't do with an X-Box.

So for people who just want to play the game, maybe have a couple extra acessories on the side- go X-box, especially if you don't want to go through the hassle of putting a PC together. If you want more than just a game, if you want communication and innovation- go for PC.

PC rulez all the way!

X-Box, GameCube, and PlayStation are all awful. If Heroes went to one of those before the PC, NWC would get some very nasty letters from a certain Dragon.

Besides, strategy games play better on PCs; the mouse is a better tool for them than the Joystick, controller, etc.

Xbox is designed to be a 'console' not a PC, or a 'poor man's PC'. It's designed to be a games machine. It doesn't have the same versatility as a PC, but then neither do other consoles. And where else can you buy a complete "poor man's PC" for $299? The graphics card alone is worth more than that (it's better than a Geforce 3 apparently).

I'm not an xbox supporter.. just pointing it out that the Xbox is not a PC and shouldn't be compared with one (even though its composition is very PC-like).
