Using saves is ok, because you have to get a feeling for what you can manage with and against what, when losses are tolerable (with a view on gain and turn you gain it), what is dangerous and to avoid, how to battle against certain AI formations and so on.
There will come the time, though, were you'll have to suffer it through.
In one PBEM game of mine (M/wU, 3 single human Teams plus 1 3-AI Team, I think on Emperor), Strong Defenders, I'm playing Elven Rogue. You'll start drooling, seeing the Elven Bard (Longbow attack instead of a puny Crossbow) - however, they also cost 100 gold + 20 Mana. Got contact with Dwarven Sorcerer turn 10, but lucked out: I explored the thing that gives arctic concealment and walking for 8 turns, before making contact (in arctic). She had just conquered an Outpost with two stacks and no less than 10 units, and being in movement range, although concealed and not necessarily in natural movement line I could only hope, having just one full stack with my main Rogue.
Next turn she had divided her forces, madam Hardbottom herself falling back into the direction of her Throne city, the other stack off into another direction exploring. She had 2 Boar Riders and a Deep Guard, everything on full strength, plus, I couldn't see what she had in her Throne City. I had my full strength main (with a clear level advantage), a Dwarven Firstborn and Deepguard, plus an Elven Pikeman, Unicorn Rider and Longbowman, everything except the Longbowman and the Hero slightly damaged.

Now what? You'd wish for nothing more than a way to save - but the thrill is of course, having to decide and reap the consequences, as it would be. I admit, I was undecided; I wasn't near enough to both beat Hanna and conquer the Throne, even if it was undefended, but obviously, if I took a go at her, I'd have to bite the bullet and try to eliminate her NEXT TURN, no matter how badly mauled my troops would be (otherwise the other stack might move in range).

In the end, you know what decided it? The idea, having to face a Dwarven Sorc in a full-blown town siege, if I'd fall back to safer terrain and come back with reinforcements.

So I attacked Hanna. She twice Fisted my Longbowman to death and boosted her Boar Riders both with Stone Skin. In the end I killed her, losing the Elven Pikeman as well. I disappeared into concealment near her Throne, waiting eagerly for next turn.
Which came. Throne was guarded with a Warlord (15 CP), 2 Dwarven Axeman and 1 Dwarven Deepguard, Wooden Wall. My Unicorn Rider (Phase) was at 45 HPs, my Firstborn at a little over 30 as was the Dwarven Deepguard, plus my full strength Hero. I could Summon a Grimbeak and would still have left 20 CPs; the Warlord was a Frostling, so I would be able to Fireball him twice, killing him, the rest being child's play - except, of course, what would happen with the Warlord's 15 CP.
So, I summoned the Grimbeak into the stack and attacked.
After an enemy wait, I moved to flank and cast my first Fireball on the Frost Warlord.
And that's when the Warlord in his turn cast Shout of Intimidation and managed to Panic my main, who would exit the map in 2 turns.

Now, the thing was, if I HADN'T summoned the Grimbeak immediately, I could have retreated with all my forces, being at 0 MPs, but summoning the Grimbeak would have given me a new unit to initiate combat again, which would have been even more of a child's play then. I didn't have that option, though. Also - no quit/save possible.

Had to tough it out, obviously. In fact, I managed to win that, losing the Grimbeak only (but Unicorn Rider and Firstborn ended up mauled at 3 and 4 HPs left.

You can imagine how THAT felt.

Great story, JJ. Just shows how interesting the game can be.

I'll be giving the game a try in multiplayer with someone in a co-op vs AI. But not that pbem thingy, the classic internet connection. Or, who knows. Just as long as we're playing it and not waiting for someone's turn, anything's fine with me.

Haven't really progressed on my rogue tigran game but I'll try and work some more on it in my free time.

Haha, multiplayer is just something else! You don't abuse save/load, you lose troops and have to make peace with it, you definitely do NOT build structures only, expansion is more perilous due to many enemies from all sides (a freaking bone dragon came for me from the underground!), and best of all you can make a strategy and conquer the world with a friend along side of you and it's tons of fun! Man, this game is great

By the way, I'm just putting the finishing touches to a Necromancer balancing Mod I'll obviously want to test then ...

Plus the game has some really nice additions that would transition well into Heroes series. Golden Realms introduces adventure map structures that when conquered and "pulled" into your cities area of control add an effect to units build in it, like Resurgance etc. That adds a little customization element to the game, like you build only Pikeman in this town and only Archers in the other etc. Or the "secret", non-researchable spells you can unlock only when you get them in a Dungeon as a reward (remember the "Fear" spell glitch back in Heroes III AB?). You can even summon the freakin' Bone Dragon with such a spell @Stevie (it's the only way of getting it for your army if I remember correctly). It's also nice that you can end main Campaigns with a "bad" ending or a "good" ending depending on the path you choose, for those of us who like meaningful campaigns (take that H6 Tear system!).

Oh, and one of the dev team guys, Tibbles, (there were a few of them active, but he was the all-over-the-place one) on the forum boards gave such a great feedback that he literally responded to every players question or sugestion (and tried to implement it asap with the dev team when technical/improvment/balancing things came up), played games with them and made "Let's play" movies on Youtube that introduced new stuff, and all this in a fun and very laid-back way. Talk about some serious connection between devs and players... I cannot even fathom how opposite to this the H7 team is...

Damn, why this game didn't get a third expansion is beyond me...

Gah, sorry. Maybe I meant Tombles, he is the 'Keymaster' afterall. But I'm not certain I don't remember the names exactly, I didn't visit the forum for a long while now. But the point is that Triumph devs were doing a great job!

@verriker
For sure. And the funny thing is that it 'hit' me just between H6 and H7 too. AoW III is probably the reason why I hate H7 even more...

What an ending, lol!

Basically Joonas (it was him who I was in co-op with) went charging ahead into the heart of the enemy's territory to plunder some cities with a party of 1 leader and 4 heroes. Despite his brief victorious moments and also my warnings that if he kept it up he'd eventually die, he attacked a Rogue AI which had 2 succubuses and fought on auto-combat. And lost! His throne city was also facing imminent siege and he had nothing there, so he just surrendered, lol. Meanwhile I figured that my own Rogue was kinda focusing too much on conquering treasure sites and monster camps, but I had in mind a more expansionist approach and homeland security. From what I gathered, it's very easy to lose troops as a rogue in autocombat, especially if you're tigran too, so I was slowed considerably due to losses and also reluctance.

But man, it sure was a blast. Maybe next time we'll manage to get past turn 80, lol.

I'll be free for that PBEM game JJ, but we'll have to go over the settings a bit. And I also need to figure out if I want a new class and race, cuz tigran rogue kinda disappointed me. I'll let you know when I'm ready.

You won't regret it. Make sure you have the Necro addon, at least!

@ Stevie

Depends on whether we play allies. If we do, we can go all-out against a 6-AI alliance on a large map or something like a 3-AI alliance on a medium map.
Ah, and let me add - in PBEM, Tigran Rogue givers of course a lot better feel than with autocombat, especially in the beginning. Scoundrels are a favorite AI target, and it's difficult to keep them alive in auto - same with Bards. Manualing combat, it's a totally different proposition.
In auto, Dwarves are really good, because they are so sturdy. High survival rate - no experiments. Defensive Strike on Axemen is a real killer, and those Boar Riders are rock-solid, too.

This game can be overwhelming at first, but the more you play it the more you will see how great and well-designed it is...

And I've got like 150 hours from it just by playing campaigns (my overall timer stopped at 265 hours so far).

Glad you bought it thought. Developers like Triumph should be supported as much as possible. Plus they're proabably working on AoW IV atm

That's one thing.
The other - the full game (with the 2 addons) comes with 9 Races and 7 Classes. Plus 15 or so Specializsations. Starting a game you'll have to pick 1 Class, 1 race and 3 specs which makes for one hell of variation. It's one hell of a difference whether you play Elven Rogue or Elven Arch Druid, but it's one hell of a difference as well, whether you play an Elven Rogue or an Orcish Rogue.

I bought the whole bundle on steam I see that there are plenty of configurations that I should try out The only problem is that I will be on business trip for next two weeks, and I won't have much time to play the game.
