It looks interesting, I like survival games. Anyone have any experience with it?

Both my wife and I have played the game.  I enjoyed it and my wife loved it.  She probably has over a hundred hours into the game.  I think I have somewhere around 30.

I have not played it for several months now and have missed out on most of the latest updates.  The art style is great as is the gameplay.  It was quite easy when I used to play it but from what I've read of the updates, the game is now harder.

Despite not playing it in awhile (due to Dark Souls, Civilization V, and board games), I recommend it.  It's only about $12.00 on steam with the perpetual discount.

Tried it in Steam browser, then Firefox, then IE, all get the same error from paypal. Blargh.

Ah now it mysteriously works. Yay.

EDIT:

I know NOTHING about the crafting recipes in this game so I bet this will be interesting for me

EDIT2:

Very enjoyable so far Gold is a b**** to find and sanity is hard to deal with.

Sanity was introduced after I stopped playing, so I have no idea how hard it makes the game.  I suppose it makes night even harder.

I made myself a hat made out of flowers, gave me a bit more sanity recovery during the days

But **** this is frustrating, I finally got my science machine going and was swimming in gold, and then I see this egg and am like "well that looks tasty" but then motha****ing mother bird comes outta nowhere and starts beating the **** out of me.

I'm like "OK HAVE YOUR EGG BACK FOR **** SAKE LEAVE ME ALONE" and throw it out and run in desperation but motherbird don't care, motherbird only yearns for my demise.

**** you bird. **** you.

I learn something new every death though.

I haven't played since a few updates back but I had a lot of fun with the beta. I'll be playing it again sometime in the near future. I look forward to seeing what all changes were made.

Making progress

Built my base camp next to a huge amount of rabbit holes so I've been living on rabbit meatballs for some days... cooking pot sure helps.

Heh, the night can be a frightening time.

Have you started farming yet?

Oh, unless you want the science machine for decoration you can destroy it since you have the alchemy machine. Same goes for the alchemy machine once you get the shadow manipulator.

It has been a while since I've played but I read over some stuff in the wiki to get me back up to speed.

It is usually the hounds that wind up getting me. Or me being greedy and thinking I can take on just one more spider even though already at low health. Heh.

This game actually scares me, not in the HOLY **** kinda way but in this creepy, nervous kinda way... like I dunno if I'll be able to find enough food to last another day and so...

When you've spent many hours on a char the permanent death is just... so damn frightening.

Here's my Wilson in early winter. He is sporting rabbit ear muffs. He has the materials to make a beefalo hat and he will wear that once the rabbit ear muffs wear out. He has a heat stone by the fire to pick up and carry with him on his winter wonderland exploration.

This is actually my first winter since winter had not been implemented when I played before.

Edit: Wilson survived his first winter. He did once to McTusk. I had not noticed Wilson's armor was so degraded, Wilson was not even trying to fight him. But he was resurrected at a "waypoint" (I  don't remember the proper name) he had found. That is a one shot deal and the site is not destroyed.

I had a bug too. After winter Wilson shaved his manly beard but did not get the beard hairs. At least I think it is a bug since when I had played before he got his bear hairs when he shaved. I don't know that was changed when insanity creatures were introduced. I may have to let Wilson's sanity go down so I can kill the shadow rabbits (again, probably not the proper name) and get some beard hair to make an effigy.

Wilson managed to build two bee boxes during the winter and is working. He has now planted a small grass farm and needs to plant some farms for twigs. He has about 7 food farms not in the picture.

Edit2: Wilson has survived 100 days. Now in his third(?) winter. He has continued to improve his base.

I played a lot in the beta so I have an experience advantage over you. Though many things have changed since I played. I don't try to face multiple hostiles at once, that is suicide. I let them chase me to a beefalo herd or to some pigs and them fight the hostiles.

You can deconstruct pig houses with your hammer, it does not make them go hostile. You'll get about  half of the materials needed to build another pig house when you deconstruct one. I don't deconstruct pig villages, only solitary houses. Though I've not found a pig village on my current map, and thus no pig king.

Don't build a pig house directly in your base as pigs can turn into werepigs and hostile you. Or eat any food you accidentally drop on the ground. Build the pig houses maybe a screen above/to the side of your base.

I decided to leave carrots on the ground until the first winter. They don't respawn but they don't spoil as long as you don't harvest them.

The first two tools I make are an axe and a pickaxe. First day I gather lots of grass and twigs and cut down a few trees, mine a few rocks (If I've found any) and gather berries.

I wish I'd built my base closer to a worm hole. With Winter in the mix now those long excursions to far away places are expensive, time wise. You take a slight sanity hit if you go through a worm hole but as long as you don't jump in and out of them constantly the slight sanity loss is not bad.

When looking for a place to set up a base I look for a beefalo herd or pigs(beefalo prefered) as both of those give you manure and "friends" to help in a fight. And as time goes on you WON'T be able to fight the hounds by yourself not to mention other nasties. Don't set your base directly where the pigs or beefalo are, but a screen or two from where they are.

Be mindful that beefalo in heat will hostile you if you get too close and are not wearing a beefalo hat. Otherwise they are neutral until you attack one.

When trapping rabbits you don't need bait. Place a trap over the hole and the rabbit will be trapped as he tries to enter or leave the hole without you wasting food. Then, depending on how many traps you have, you can even place traps beside the trap over the hole to have a very good chance at catching other rabbits that will spawn when you are away doing other stuff.

Traps also are great for farming spiders.

Saplings grow without fertilizer, so you can dig them up from anywhere to move to your base.  Berry bushes and grass though require fertilizer so I don't dig those up to move to my base unless they are far away.

I really hate going into swamps as those tentacles can beat you armor up quickly.  Keep an eye on your armor durability.  Oh, and when your character says something like, "Did you hear something?" it means a hound attack will be coming shortly so start running for that beefalo herd.

Oh, always, always, always make sure you have a torch in your inventory and that you know where it is in your inventory. Night attacks used to kill me a lot before I learned that.

Didn't know the thing about not needng to bait traps, cool.

Do I run the risk of killing off the entire population if I hunt too much? I've always been letting at least 2 of them live just in case.
