New HoMMs
I really haven't played any of them since HoMM III.
I've always been under the impression that III was the height of the series.
How do the new ones compare to 3?

IV was innovative but it changed some things that really shouldn't have been changed. and heroes are very imbalanced. mixed feelings on it.
V is basically H3 in 3D. which is kinda pointless I might add. sure, it added new skills, abilities and initiative. but I'll take III any day over V.
VI is considered by many to be the worst in the series yet. Again changed things that should not have been changed, very little improvement and it feels like the fun is missing from everything.

I really like turn-based strategy games.
But they've been almost completely replaced by RTS, FPS, and now MOBA.
Hopefully one day they will make a comeback. The main issue with these games is how long it takes to play them. I remember spending 3-4 hours playing a single game. I really don't want to play a game for longer than 60 minutes.
My current favorite game is Dota. And I can't stand the games that last 50-60 min. I like it when the games are around 30-40 minutes. At a high level of play most games are 20-40 minutes. Any longer and I get impatient.
A lot of starcraft 2 games are only 5-15 minutes long.
If someone can come out with a fast-paced turn-based strategy game with some interesting game mechanics, then I would be really happy about that.

Heroes V is very sluggish online, even Heroes III can get tiring, I see your point.

I will admit that HoMM 3 was a snowload of fun back in the day. I loved that game. But even the best players couldn't finish a game much quicker than 2 hours.
I just don't have that much time to devote to one game.

Exactly. But, who will think of making a turn-based strategy game like you described? It's a great idea but I don't know who would do it today.

Well the key to a good turn-based strategy game is that it has depth.
The issue that I think most developers have run into is they add a lot of time consuming, tedious depth.
If you look at Chess, it's a single board of 64 squares. Every piece moves in its own manner. But the way you put them together provides for a very dynamic game.
The main issue with HoMM3 is that it has a lot of depth, but most of the time is spent playing the map, rather than the opponent.
The combat system is outstanding. That's what makes the game so great. The snowty part is that the overworld map is slow and clunky.
Levelling up and playing the map efficiently, I think is important, but I think you could take some elements from MOBAs and insert them into a turn-based style game.

HoMM keeps getting better although it is true that H3 was the best of its time and the heart of the series.

Nonsense Homm3 is still the best one. Just like Diablo 2 is better than Diablo3.
