Is sight radius good to get

So in heroes 4 there is shroud of war, the only heroes game that has this. I've lost a few games to my friends lately simply because I saw them coming far too late and was out of position. I didnt see them coming through territory I've already explored (shroud of war). In other heroes sight radius is kind of meh, only good if you don't know the map. In H4 it seems considerably more useful due to shroud of war. Is it worth sinking levels to GM scouting and target artifacts like the spyglass to boost sight radius?

Well there are situations when scouting range can be very important. Even in the campaigns when the enemy has a big movement bonus you should have bigger scouting range in order to better evade their attacks and control them, so is in player vs player situations too. Scouting goes very good with the death spell mire, so if you can see your opponent before he can, you can cast mire on him and he will be very very slow ...

The bigger reason why I would take GM scouting is being able to know what spells and skills exactly your opponent has. You can even check their equipped artifacts and potions as much as I know. BUT note that this has much value if you are the one that attacks first, in case the enemy attacks you first he can change artifacts, creature formations and so on and in those cases scouting loses a good deal of it's value.

I am very glad, when I can go past any creature and enemy hero without Master scouting and even get experience for that!

Also pathfinding excelerates your map movement and you explore more.
You can always use a good scout.

And sometimes you can see the enemy only if you have grandmaster scouting.

I really like the mire strategy you talked about I never thought of that. When I play as death I typically lvl a necromancer to 6 or 7 then add a death knight, but if I notice mire in my Mage guild I'll get a chaos thief and some scouting instead.

I noticed something I really like about scouting; it allows you to move around the map more effectively. By having more sight, you notice more things and can more easily plan your movement around the map. You could spot a gold mine you otherwise would not have, or be able to view the spell at a shrine and determine you already have it and not waste movement going there. Things such as this make your map movement more efficient and indirectly increases your movement.

There are also ways for you to play without scouting and still be able to move well on the map, but you have to be careful.

For example you can use level 1 creatures to pick up resource piles or check the correct number of enemies before a battle or check magic shrines to see what spell there is and so on. Spells like visions and pathfinding are as good as expert scouting and pathfinding.

If you play on grass terrain, expert pathfinding is almost non useful because grass doesn't have big movement penalties, only the master and grandmaster levels are useful and only then do the scouts really get to show their power. Sometimes a map can be ended before the scout can get to master pathfinding and in those cases he has next to none advantage against enemies with expert into any other skill tree.

If you play a map without water, not having scouting can be good because with it you would have been offered seamanship on level up, so scouts can be a bit tricky to develop because they can only pick two skills on some random level ups.

And the same can be said about stealth, if you don't plan on using it, you can be offered the skill and developing the hero may be problematic, specially when you must have a certain skill offered on level up.

scouting

If you have your eye on scouting, that's a good place to be.

I suppose that GM scouting might be very useful in some sort of situations. You might even take it in some situations.

But the only thing that makes it feasible the most badass of the skills - pathfinding. Master / GM pathfinding is usually a must have in multiplayer games. Make sure to have your Pathfinder hero equip the movement bonus artifacts too.

Now back to scouting. This is what you do:

Expand in all directions with stacks of a few level 1 units. They are cheap and expendable. As you are limited to 8 stacks, make sure you use that well.

A very important trick is to have 4+ units stacked in every mine (or object) you have. Preferably the faster level 1 unit.

This helps in three ways:

1) You can use them for scouting every turn. You pull them out, make a round, go back. Attack enemies to test their strength if needed.

2) you can use creatures to carry artifacts (especially potions come into mind), you can use creatures to carry hero tombstones as well (old trick: get your hero killed, carry (chain) him over half the map and revive him in a town)

3) you have units that are quick and can be added to your hero stack anytime, anywhere. That's important because the heroes move with the speed of the FASTEST unit you have in the stack

Unknown's points are quite good, but I got a note to make:

Know what your hero wants to specialize in, and make sure to go for that. Do NOT take other skills. If you buy a thief to turn him into a pathfinder (good call in most of the maps),  until you got what you want (GM path), do NOT pick

- stealth
- seamanship
- master scouting (unneeded)
- any skill in any other area (even if it'd be free)

That ensures that you can get your Pathfinder at the lowest level possible. I think that's level 7-8. Sooner if you get scouting shrine

(this is true for any sort of specialization, for instance, if you build a life mage, take only life skills and nothing else until you got to your target mastery level). then you take combat and such
