Dominions 4 - Thrones of Ascension

With the fiasco and disappointment of the Rome II release, the regular strategy-starved player should be looking for a decent, large-scale game from the genre even more. Dominions 4 certainly is such a game, although not exactly a fancy high-budget recipe for disaster - which many of the current high-budget games are - so it's very likely that many of you have never heard of the series at all. I will not write a very long introduction just because I can't be certain if there are more than 10 HC users who have heard of or played Dominions so the purpose of this thread is to find those people - if they exist - so we can have a chat.

In short:

What is Dominions?
A turn-based strategy set in a fantasy, or more accurately - mythological world. As the smarter among you have already guessed, there are 4 games bearing this title already.

Who developed Dominions?
An indie studio, Illwinter Game Design, who are Swedish.

How does Dominions look like?
"Retro" would be the polite expression. The graphics aspect is a mixture between basic 2D and basic + 1 3D and the animations aren't that many, nor that complex.

How does Dominions sound like?
Quite nicely, if you ask about the music (although one or two tracks may get on your nerves after 10+ repetitions). The sounds are nothing special but they don't irritate either.

What do you do in Dominions?
The stage is a world which has been left without a supreme deity, for one reason or another. As a result, dozens of mages, spirits, titans, monsters of all kinds, etc. see their chance to take the vacant position, hence the competition, hence the war. You play as one of these would-be-gods and you task is to ascend to godhood. You can do it by conquering the entire world with brute force, by spreading your religion, by assassinating all other pretender gods, by claiming all Thrones of Ascension (the latter is new in Dominions 4) and by other means. You take control of a nation of your choosing - there are more than 30 available - and get access to 1000 or more (literally) spells and 2000 or more creatures with various properties so you can get the job done. In short - that's it. A detailed explanation would require days to write.

What is the scale of Dominions?
Vast. Apart from the numbers in the above paragraph, the amount of details in terms of random events, magic items, possible combinations between spells, properties of your realm, size of the world that you can play on and whatnot is huge. The game is exactly the opposite of "streamlined" in all regards and keeps getting extra features in every new instalment.

It also has hotseat and "traditional" multi-player, supports modding and has a pretty dedicated community. That's the (very) short version for the newbies. The rest - what do you think about Dominions 4 compared to Dominions 3?
