Do you refuse to play certain heroes because you hate their avatars?
Forget statistics, probability, and well-worn, treasured strategies, are there certain characters you won't play (unless forced to) because their avatars are simply too dorky-looking for your tastes?
No good reason for it. No explanation or defense you could make on a strategy board such as this one.
You simply can't stand their avatars. Period.
Olema? Helloooo? I can barely even see you. What the hell are you, anyway? A man? A woman? A wookie? I don't like to play a character until I know what I'm playing as.
Alkin? Oh, great, now I'm an albino ewok. I don't care how good your armor and offense are. Pass!
Drakon? All he needs is a sports cap and a whistle and I can imagine him saying, "From now on, gang, we won't let Rudolph play any reindeer games."

When I played the game in late 90's / early 00's, I had a big dislike for the Tazar's avatar. As such I despised whenever he showed up in the Tavern.
Back then I'd no clue about differences between heroes apart from their avatar, all I cared about was what spells they could use, and as long as you had wisdom you could learn all spells.

but i buy her still if playing conflux
nagash, i hate the gem in his face
tazar looks ugly yeah, but cmon, his story is one of the most cool! (he led a small force and survived until reinforcements! very cool if u ask me)
the other way around:
i liked the frostring-cleric very much, a really epic avatar, also sandros noncampaign image is one of the best, the campaignone falls prolly under the first section...(cmon a guy wih a curtain..)

I dislike the portraits of Axsis the Heretic and Nymbus the Necromancer and especially Olema the Heretic and Shakti the Overlord. When I started playing homm3 it was around 2001-2002 and until then I have played homm2. Homm2 portraits were more beautiful except Sandro the Necromancer. I prefer e his homm3 version.

I think pretty much all the avatars in heroes 3 are really great. They have a wide range of looks and faces. Crazy, beautiful, ugly, in-between, enigmatic, etc. I enjoy the variety of them all.
Now, don't get me started on the campaign-only heroes, though, including heroes chronicles. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the same people that made them that also made the classic heroes 3 portraits. They're lackluster, bad quality. I wouldn't enjoy playing with those avatars, in fact.

Just when playing Conflux? She's the best scout you could ask for as she's completely self-sufficient. Comes with 1 fast pixie and a double strength fire wall. Fresh out of the tavern, that's 80 damage per step through the wall. With 1 pixie, enemies will split into 7 stacks, so that's 560 damage per turn. Add one spell power (SP) and now that's 100 damage per step/700 damage per turn.
Upgrade to advanced fire magic (AFM) and not only do you add another 20 damage per step, but your wall becomes 3 hex and you can now take on flyers as well. Expert fire magic (EFM) adds 60 damage per step. If she has EFM and 10 spell power, she can take on a full crypt with 1 pixie. She only needs EFM and 7 SP to take on a full imp cache with 1 pixie (not on lava terrain).
Only stipulation is you shouldn't attack archers or enemies whose upgrades are archers, like gremlins. If you can acquire expert water magic and forgetfulness though, you can attack archers as well. Or in the case of weaker enemies such as master gremlins that show up when you attack gremlins, just carry a direct damage spell too and waste the archers first.

with necro i need those creeps for myself, so noneed for luna, with everything else, well most of the time i got already 8 heroes^^
i know shes strong, but i find grindan stronger (slow  )
thorgrims grin is somewhat insane too!
like a trollface with his resistance MUHAHA XD
the battlemage with offence spec is crazy looking too, but not too ugly^^

Slightly offtopic but has to do with images I like and dislike.
A true beauty is the look of 1 1 in power and knowledge on a level 5-10 hero. On the other hand its terrible looking at higher stats on your main hero in magic than they have in might. Will often happen with heroes like Neela and Gundula.
Necless of swiftness just looks so much better than charm of mana.

@dieDevil, Ayden is my favorite hero lol. I'm an Inferno player and always go with him since get a ton of spell points

Don't play female heretic with look of witch (too lame colours and ugly face).
Don't play Cutbert.

Piquedram the Alchemist - weird nose
Gird the Strongholder - what are you?
Every hero with a "face" of a psychic element - not even a face. (ok one could argue that since troglodytes dont have eyes thery dont have face either but still it looks far more like one)

I must say that Hero looks mattered much much much more to me in Heroes 4 than in 3.
That being said I usually refuse to Hire Heroes I don't like based on their specialties now although I will admit there are some who's picture still throws me off.
Olema the Heretic, yikes just looks like a bearded lady.

I never until I read this post realized how useful both Luna and FWall could be. Although really it's mostly only useful with Luna as she doubles the damage, I had never actually read the specifics of her special as I thought FWall useless really.
To clarify the damage she does for other ppl a bit more here is a brief table. Keep in mind as well that this is damage PER step through each hex of the fwall and also that it only costs her 6mp per cast and the wall lasts for 2 turns.
Starting at 3 Spell Power as she come with that by default.
Basic/Advanced/Expert Fire Magic damage
3. 80/100/160
4. 100/120/180
5. 120/140/200
10. 220/240/300

Olema spent her entire life in Eeofol, but when the Kreegans arrived, she talked them into letting her serve as a guide to the land, and has since proven her ability to lead.

You can replace avatars directed in the lods. You should also be able to override an avatar by placing the new .pcx image in the 'data' folder of heroes3 with the same name as the original avatar.
