Well I would crertainly use the Pao Warchief in Open format to gang up to ma Acamas with Blood of my tribe. Not that efficcient but one hell of fun. He may not be the strongest Stronghold creature. but i think they overdid that part..
And OMG his artwork is Great!!!

Death Lord is buffing Vampires and is winning war of attrition because of his ability to heal your Hero. Vampires being able to attack twice if they attack a creature with 1 attack damage or lower means that we will probably see something that is able to cast crippling counters again(beside that Necro building from Five Towers).
6 Might is a lot for every faction, but considering that Academy has like 10 ways to pump Magic without leveling it with hero, it can be done. And if any creature is worth 6 Might and 6 resources cost, then a 3-3-8 with evade and swift that potentially can be 5-3-8 and has sweep attack at the same time, definitely is that creature.
And I hope you realize that Tainted Orcs aren't in Base Set 2, and for a good reason.
I am not saying that they will be 100% playable, I just think that they have the potential, especially because we haven't seen rest of the cards yet.
For all you know, we might see old school Zardoc Fatties build with Blackskull Clan Warlords, that has few Pao Warchiefs for late game punch.

Most of the cards are pretty decent for standard format, while they will almost always suck for open because open really won't change much even with new cards.

Cards don't have to suck in open, for example in the last expansion we had a lot of useless cards but also some good ones like: night of the rising moon, shalassa's blade, war tent, tower of the smith, crusader vanguard, rakshasa scout, fate bender, light elemental, moonsilk strand, wither, elrath's protection, Gazal's sapience, truce, memory lapse and the price of the void.

Agree with RMZ, open won't change much...they are surely focusing the new cards on standard gameplay.
Watcher, I don't mind that you want to play open format only, just know that you will probably be left behind playing noobers, as most players will jump on the standard format, besides I am sick and tired of seeing Spellthor. Variety is the spice of life.

I am aware of that DD and it saddens me. But taking out good decks isn't the way to go in my humble opinion but giving cards to create the opportunity so that every\most heroes will be a force to reckon with although not necessarily equal in strength.
Anyway after spending 1 year and a half to collect all cards, I just cannot play without them, especially when I enjoy most of them.
Indeed now Kelthor dominates, my last 2 jp I finished tier1 and got up to almost 1580 ( in the meantime I tried new decks and went lower) without being one of the top players out there; but I am hoping for a miracle where this expansion or the next will balance the open format and give a good chance for winning to 15-20 decks; and maybe then I will be joined in open by all the good players out there again
Anyway taking out half the cards is not my idea of variety although I can agree that you guys(the majority) is right about the way things are.

Kelthor might not be as popular deck anymore with the changes to Magic Peddler(and it changes a lot for Kelthor at least, and for Sandalphon aggro).
And how about playing both formats? I will probably do this, nothing stops you from playing both and just switching decks. Especially because now we will have Jackpot and Swiss every day but those will be opposite formats, when first is standard, second is open and vica versa.

You are right RMZ, my point was although I might not have expressed myself correctly that I will mainly play open; that does not mean that I won't try standard, who knows maybe I will enjoy it ( doubtful but than again 3 months ago I disliked Hakeem mill).
In regards to what might be or not be popular I have to say that the last week on ladder I've been playing with rather very nice results an aggro version of Alia with mass inner fire, ff and martyr ( for opponent's ff) being key cards here.

Damn, now this one is scary. LQDBrunt is right, probably the best card spoiled up to today. 
I can see both Sandalphon and Kelthor with this powerhouse, Myranda too. This card is just amazing, a true unique card!

Now this is one good card. I will get this in the first 30 mins after the expansion. ( with the exception of the case when the servers will crash for 2 days)

It is not good, it is overpowered, and many top players agree with that. 
I know that it is unique, but it still kind of removes two creatures, relocate + town portal. Aggro decks are going to destroy with this card.

Well, there are already a lot of overpowered cards in the open, so maybe more will bring some balance, at least this card can now be used by some heroes who haven't great decks at the moment.
Sandal aggro suffered when sots changed from 3 magic to 4 and treasurers required 4 might so maybe this is his chance to get back at top.
Plus besides Kelthor heroes like Zouleika, Yukiko, Myranda, both Akane can also use it and those decks are not overpowered.
And depending on the new spells we will get why not think about some Kat or Cassandra decks with spells. When I started the game I played up to 1100+ with a Cassandra spell+ creatures deck which was by no means competitive but funny, maybe in the future new opportunities will appear.

do you think that all our current cards are going to be updated to the new meta, ie if i have anael in my collection, will this card automatically be changed to the new anael?

Ofcorce not. The new Anael and Zefiria are New cards part of the new set. The best you will get is a full set of collector achievements for BS2. But you will still have to get the cards from the new set.

...hear me out, so any new cards, with new abilities will have to be re-acquired?
The reason i ask this is 2 fold, firstly do you think the new cards will only be playable in bs2 format, or secondly do you think you will get to see 2 anaels on battlefield with separate abilities?
This ofc has a huge bearing on std meta - as ultimately there would be absolutely no point what so ever to even consider playing std any further.

Take a classic Ishuma deck, change 1 da and 1 wanizame with 2 yeti's, I tell you it works wonders vs creature spammers like haven.
I urge you to try it, it's very potent. Finally I have found a place for my yeti's, not all 4 but at least 2 of them.

Yes they will have to be reaqired since they are a different card. Just like Gazal HoTW does not replac standard Gazal.
And since they are individual cards you will most likely be able to play them at the same time.

I think that it is pretty clear, all of the cards are playable in open, while in standard it is just cards from BS2(300 cards) plus this expansion that will have 100 cards.
Anael and Zefiria are different than their old verisions from Forgotten Wars. They are not just reprinted/reworked cards, lore wise they represents same creatures/persons from different periods, in their different forms etc. Same as how we have 2 different Gazals, 2 different Akanes(that unlike Gazal aren't even from the same faction).
And I didn't understand, why there won't be any point in playing Standard?

Since things are slow around the forums wanted to tell you guys that I made a funny different Kelthor deck, ofc not as good as the classic but it got me a current 15 win streak on ladder. In case you want to see it or comment it's named The Fury Within and it's posted on mmdocking site, nick is Reg1nleif as in game.
