I've already posted this on the official forums so I will copy paste it.

"Let me translate the news to all you guys out here.
1) If you are a new player and want to play on an open format, you need seals to buy boxes so you can unlock the now very expensive cards; but you can only gain seals with cash, so you do the math. I reckon at least 300 euro to unlock the cards not even mentioning having them.
2) If like me you are a veteran of the game you probably have already all the cards and enough seals for the coming expansion. So far so good BUT come next expansion you will have no more seals, and if you want to get the new cards rather fast you need seals so you have to buy seals.
In conclusion I want to say that I'm not one of those people who want things for free; as far as doc is concerned I spent a good share of money already to show my support and complete my collection, not to mention the money I spent on heroes 6 where I bought every version of the game (vanilla, 2 dlc, gold, sod expansion preordered and the complete version); but I did so because I wanted to not because I had to. What bugs me now is that if will want to play the game at a high level (1500+) we will HAVE TO spend money and will not be a choice of yours like it was until now. I know every company has its marketing strategy but I find this one lacking.
This is my 2 cents on this letter."

I need 2 more shalassa's blades and 2 more blackskull cyclops and I will have 4 of each card but I want to keep my 9000 seals for the exp goddammit.
Also new players who want to play open need 300 euro to do so, since they need to unlock the cards in the altar by buying boxes.

This is exactly why I think we should avoid to conclude anything.
We don't know how rare Seals are going to be, only that they will be rarer.
We don't know how the Altr of Wishes will handel the discontnued sets. Right now There will only be BS1 and VR who will be discontinued so they have one more set to make it clear.
Achievements will be surely redone as well. Just for the fact how many of them give Emilios, Heroic packs and Small packs.
We have yet to see the full scale of these changes, and no drafts on paper can fully explain them.

Well besides economy, only gameplay can change, which given a new set of cards an two formats it's sure to change. What other bad news should we expect? tickets to play on ladder, 1 per day or what? People who use wolf captains or tainted orcs are dropped below 1500?

That's a somewhat wild assumption - not to mention that "two different formats" are only the surface covering direct online duels.

It's just that you've been enjoying things so far and are afraid of not enjoying things so much with all the changes - but your premises are somewhat wrong. See, CURRENTLY the problem for a newbie - and with the game being ported to consoles there are bound to be a freaking lot of newbies is EXACTLY the fact that the top couple thousand players have such a wealth of decks and strategies that they can't hope to compete unless they spend a wagonload of credit to get access to what they need or think they need.

That's obviously not so much fun, and that's obviously something the devs see as well. So you have to think more along the lines of "How can we change things in a way that lets newbies who mean it have their moments of success while at the same time keeping things interesting for the veterans?

Note also, that the old cards are not lost or something. They will still be available, even in the old format.

Which means, if I was you will I would just wait and see and stop imagining that the sky is falling down. Won't happen.

@JJ: We haven't been enjoying things so far. Far from it! The meta is boring, so I am looking foward to the new format and new meta big time!

I like all the changes except the one that says leveling up won't get you seals anymore. Boo hoo.

For not enjoying things you seem to have wasted a lot of time with it, though.

The game was pretty enjoyable until the Five Towers, at least it was for me. I guess DD feels the same.

I still enjoy the game but I fear what is to come. From personal experience all free to play games have a moment when they start downhill and never recover. (for hon was early access, pretty sure dota2's moment is around the corner) For DoC I believe it started in the five towers.
Also I heard something about ladder reset on the last interview? or did I get it wrong? - I am referring to the sticky posted today by aza on the official forums with the youtube video

If there's no ladder for open like Jasonparadise suggested on stream, and only 1 out of 3 days of jp open I quit the game the moment the exp comes out; for me this is the final insult.

I can't follow.
Let's assume that Base Set 2 will be a fair - that is, balanced - card foundation. In that case YOU, as a vet, have all cards. You also have the seals to buy the new expansion.
What that means is, that you can forge every deck you want - you also can play open, if you so desire.
The new rankings will be quite different anyway.
Although - while the ladders will be reset every month, you won't start at 0. Things will change a lot more there.

He said that as far as he knows, though he admits he might be wrong there will only be a ladder for the standard format (which I dislike) and not for open. That was my worry/question - is this statement true?

My impression was that all duels, open or standard format will influence your ranking within your "class". Otherwise, they would be "unranked" duels, and that's not the case.
I THINK - although I'm not sure - that there will be ONE ranking table for ranked duels no matter the format.
If it's true that there will be double s much time for standrad format, then that will be a handicap, true.
Still I don't see your problem with the standard format. Care to elaborate?

Don't worry Watcher!

Listen carefully to what he is saying in the video. It is very interesting.

As a player progresses by winning duels (losses don't count), they will get promoted from recruit -> squire -> knight -> commander to lord commander. The higher tier the player the more rewards they will get from daily quests, etc.
Later on, players will reach competitive tiers, called the Champion tiers. Champion I, II and III.
Players progress to each tier as they win duels (like increasing experience but from wins only).
Every month the ladder will be reset, so that the current player progression inside their current tier will be set back to zero. This will make it challenging for the players to reach the next tier before the reset triggers.
Note, this means that you will only get reset back to the start of the tier you are currently in. NOT back to zero.
This has nothing to do with ELO or your Level. It is something competely new.

Damn, I am getting excited now!

Hope this helps.

@JJ I spent a lot of time (some money too) to get all the cards, the decks that exist now I really like, from the high competitive ones to the trollish ones; if the majority feels like the open format is not competitive/fair enough than no problem - the standard ladder/jp is the answer BUT let me play on ladder (not just jp) with the heroes, spells, creatures etc that I enjoy and that for some I payed cash for.
So in conclusion I see no reason why I should have only the option of playing a on standard ( which in my opinion is just a less complex, much slower uninteresting version of open) when I payed money to get cards with which I should be able to play everyday on ladder just like before.
Everybody says Kelthor is boring, well I think not just as I didn't think Ishuma was boring 4 months ago when she dominated. Well by all means take them out for who doesn't want them; but I enjoy playing with forbidden flame, or Cassandra with prison, or with ambush outmanoeuvre creatures in sanctuary or with wolf captains etc.
Conclusion - I am only interested in plaing the game with all existing cards + new ones which should be the ones that bring balance to the game and trying to achieve that by eliminating cards.
@DD - I like the new ranking just as long as I can play ladder on open. Do not care about reseting stats though playing vs currently 100 elo players seems a bit rough for them.

Remember, newbies won't be able to reach higher tiers like we will, and we will be fighting other players in ranked duels, within one's current tier....

The only achievements to be removed:
•Ready to rumble (reach 200 Elo)
•Born to rise above all (reach 1001 Elo)
•You call this an invasion? (complete Orc Invasion campaign)
•Wolf Soldier (complete Orc Invasion campaign and reach Level 3)
•For honor and duty (complete Wolf Soldiers campaign)

Miscellaneous stuff:
•Packs/boxes bought with gold will not contain Wildcards
•Wildcards will be available from: packs/boxes bought with seals, achievements, daily quests, the final day of daily rewards. Not sure about packs from Swiss rewards.
•After patch, boxes will cost 1500 seals (keep in mind that boxes for new sets will contain Super Packs, which contain 2 rare/epic/hero cards, 4 uncommons, 6 commons)
•Elo will be “replaced” by Tiers (Squire, Knight, etc). Each tier will be reset every month (so you will start at the bottom of the tier you are currently in)
•There will be a new option to restrict matchmaking to your tier only
•Reward for leveling up: increased gold (enough to buy a Base Set 2 pack), no seals
•Reward for reaching level 150, 200, 250 is now Wildcards
•Expansions will be available for gold “2-3 weeks” after release
•Unlocking sets in the Altar of Wishes will no be longer 200 cards of that set, but we don’t know what it will be yet
Release date: ETA before April 11

All I care about is if I can play open on ladder, I've read the news; they say all kind of meaningless stuff (like we raised prices not because we want money, no, no sir we did it for your benefit to feel the importance of premium currency - say what?) but nothing to the point.
