I’ve had a second look on creeping with Inferno in the first week.

The suggested build order (in Natalka's last post on page 1) is very good to follow and allows for the necessary change from cerberi to shooters and elites in the second week. But it means that everything must work perfectly in the first turn.

- You must recruit both Lorhish and another (magic) hero, to collect resources and to get an army that is big enough. Non-inferno troops are needed as helpers in the first fight or the dogs will be lost.
- You must upgrade maniacs to demented and recruit the demented in your town.
- You must capture the sawmill (and the wood pile next to it!).
- You must get money with economist skill from all chests except maybe one (there are several outside the town and two beyond the portal).
- You must reach level 2 (stone of enlightenment) to learn life drain (which is necessary) & stand your ground/heroism depending on reputation. Learn regeneration instead if you’re facing undead mill guards. Reinforcements aren’t very good in the first day.
- You must get magic affinity before visiting a vein/well to have enough mana for casting life drain once in most battles. Getting it can wait until the sawmill’s guards are defeated, but it’s possible that you won’t reach level 3 without chests. Or simply choose spirit walker (+ 40 mana) as your hero’s specialization.

All this can be done with your main hero, but then the hero’s movement is used up, and if your other heroes are might heroes with the economist skill it’s possible that they don’t have ability points and/or mana to learn/use life drain, which means that you are limited to one battle in the first round.

So instead of recruiting a Barbarian goblin king with 10 mana it may be better to get a Shaman with ~8 goblins & harpies and 30 mana, a Dark Elf (both classes have 30-40 mana), or a Necro hero (Javed the spirit walker or Luna the regeneration master).

In turn 2, an economist heading east along the beach will find enough resources for you to upgrade the kennel. The other secondary hero transports the hell hounds to the town for upgrading, and takes them back to your main hero who is now ready for a bit more aggressive creeping. Just hope that there are many walkers around because life drain can’t fully compensate for shooter's first turn shots at the cerberi. You should reach level 5-6 soon, and have life drain, magic affinity, reinforcements, heroism/stand your ground, regeneration, and pressed attack.

Looking back at my game yesterday I think that a better game would look like this:

1. Start with spirit walker (+ mana) specialization, take the sawmill according to the plan presented above. Accept that the Lilims’s pain mirror and shooting mean losses.
2. Upgrade to cerberi, defeat the demented guarding the ore mine.
3. Defeat guards along the way to the crystal mine.
4. Defeat wolves, take crystal mine
5. Defeat priestesses, maniacs and sentinels guarding the water wheel, mill and the other crystal mine.
6. Ride east.
7. Reinforce army with lilim and elites. Take the other town.

With better helper heroes capable of fighting some early battles maybe I could’ve taken the other town day 6, with big losses. The cerberi have problems when facing the elite guards in town two, which means that I need lilim and elites myself, which means that taking the town is impossible too early. With lilim, juggernauts and breeders built in week 1, it should be rather easy to take the town in day 8. But without the new week's growth it’s very risky.

I was improvising a lot in my game, for example I wanted to use succubi but couldn’t afford the dwelling which was why I got cerberi. I started with 18 of them and ended the week with 11. I also lost 14 of 24 demented. Maybe I should have had fewer losses, but my point is that losses are expected, and acceptable if your building program allows you to change your focus from cerberi after a while.

Take Tazar with a lot of goblins and when u face shooters with less than 40 init you lose max 4 goblins per battle. You must have tactics on your main hero in order to do that. Tazar has only 2 skills - Economist and Logistics.

You should buy a magic inferno hero(with 9 succubus and 4 dogs) who can win the battle at the wood mine with 2 regenerations(it is quite easy). Take economist first then regeneration and when he kills them take logistics. You lose 2 dogs but better to have 9 succubus if you want to fight the other castle first week. Damage wise 9 succubus > 2 dogs and increase the chance for a lucky strike. Another reason to get tactics though - to protect your shooters. If you think that you will get more maniacs - you will begin splitting them in stack of 1s and lose them quite fast so we don`t take them in account. I think 9 succubus will be more viable in the long run.

Day 1 I get gold from 4 chests and it is barely enough to buy all army(this is super evident with stronghold), build, upgrade and buy 2 heroes. If you get XP from somewhere you risk not having money to build and upgrade dogs on day 2. Level 3 is reached with just 2 battles on day 1 - ore/sawmill and one other battle(and I think on your version of map even with 1 battle)

Tactics + Reinforcements on the main hero is enough to win the battle at the ore mine, the other next to the vein beyond the portal and that closest to the portal but on the side of the starting castle. You have to be more potent with fodder. Problem is you refuse to follow my advice about goblins. I have to show you a replay how valuable they can be. Actually I think shooters are much better than walkers except if they are chakram dancers/pearl priesstesses/upg. goblins. I typically lose 3 maulers and 3-5 goblins on day 1. If you start casting from day 1 you won`t have enough mana for castle and crypts.

My hero build is always the same for might factions during the first 5 levels and it is:
day 1 first go to stone and get level 2 - reinforcements+tactics
fight 2 battles - level 3 - logistics
day 2 fight 2 more battles - level 4 - regeneration
level 5 - pressed attack

On your version you can reach level 4 sooner. But on the latest if your main fights everything(those core stacks next to castle and westwards) except the sawmill he will reach level 5 only after defeating either one of the stacks guarding the mana potion, core dwell, fodder prison.

Castle..I have replay how to take it with lilims, juggernaut and the rest is fodder. I will have to invent a way to beat it with succubus, juggernauts and cerberi. The rest could be 4 demented which would make the opposing demented dance for 4 turns. Succubus + PA is obvious but I`m almost sure that Ravagers and Lacerators will attack the dogs instead of the Juggernauts which will be very bad. 3 regenerations for that battle is doable possibly and no other spell points should be spent.

...goes to make replay...

2 regenerations ! done! Juggernaut at 5 hp but I forgot that I have one more Juggernaut from elite dwell! Skills were Luck 1,2, Reinforcements 1, Regeneration Magic Affinity, Pressed Attack, Tactics, Logistics.

Crucial is positioning of Juggernaut first turn and also to make sure demented returns backwards.

Inspired by the replay I pushed the battle with Stronghold and it is possible to beat the castle with 1 regeneration. I used the idea to make the demented go backwards again and instead of 2 stacks of dreamwalkers which I usually do I went with 4 goblins. This allowed me to keep the lilims longer at bay. Other crucial thing is when to move the dreamwalkers forward so they can take a hit. It will be a bit easier if you level up Blood level 1 before castle which is quite doable in the crypts. In the replay I did it without that.

Amazing videos! Really cool how single demented controlled the enemy, and when they were dead did gates takes their role. And the surviving juggernaut was lucky to survive... The goblins' maneuvering in the stronghold video was also very worth seeing! One thing is weird though, it's hard to read but it looks like the furies aren't hurt by the lilims' pain mirror, which always causes me some losses.

Your text has many good points too. Some comments:

1) Azar Elk, barbarian lightning master, also has 11 goblins. He has too little mana to use lightning but in other maps he may be a good choice.

2) Recruiting a magic secondary hero instead of Lorhish is a good idea, good point. You get only 2-3 dogs less but 9 succubi is much better than 7 demented.

3) Tactics, reinforcements, logistics... I see their importance but if I can use funnier skills to an almost similar effect I'll try to do that. Reinforcements is always a must have, but tactics can wait for a while if the strategy is "melee in the middle". Logistics can also wait if I think I'll have to wait for the new week's growth to continue creeping by attacking elite neutrals. Then the elite bottle neck doesn't matter and logistics is the obvious choice.

4) It seems like neutral shooters are programmed to attack stacks that risk to block them, but can be killed in one shot. That means that a safe way to defeat shooters is to wait with the cerberi (or other main stack), move single unit fodder stacks closer, let the enemy shoot, and the move the cerberi. In turn 2 the cerberi attack and the enemy deal only half damage.

Your strategy should be to attack 1 stack at a time taking off retaliation with a fodder.  Also when you stack your troops in a corner one enemy stack reaches you a turn later. You can make a hit'n'run with one of your stacks also. You can`t do those things without tactics.
I am glad you found about sending single goblins ahead. Without tactics they start from the rear row so tactics is a must have from day 1.

Yes Juggernaut was lucky to survive but I wrote that in this battle you should have 4 nauts - one more from elite dwell. I don`t know what you are talking about elite bottle neck but wihout logistics I don`t imagine how you can take all starting island in 1 week and especially reach castle on day 5 or 6 also don't forget crypts - without them you will have very slow start week 2 due to money shortage.

A picture(video) is worth more than thousand words!

About Tactics
battle vs Shades would be impossible because single maulers will be spread randomly and then everything is screwed.

battle vs chakram dancers(very hard I wrote previously that single goblins tactics is not enough)
without tactics goblins will be not target and moreover chakram dancers will have more than 1 target with whirling death.

watch on this replay how I know which stack will act before demented and try to reduce them but hard without lucky strikes. Then after I block them they will always attack a gate so gating in creeping is useful. 2 demented loss is superb because we saved dogs and I told you that demented will be later split in single stacks and lose their dmg potential anyway.

Another approach is to play without demented. First turn you can attract all stacks with single goblins but then it is risky that you will lose more than 2 dogs in the end. When you advance with dogs at the wait phase of turn 1 and you must not attract the topmost Dancers because they act first. You should advance maulers also to block that first stack because for turn 3 because you can`t block their shot with dogs. Dogs don`t have maniac laughter and less def and hp so I think you will lose more than 2 dogs which is crucial for our newly developed strategy for week1.

Hello Kis! Nice to see u again. SO means significant other

Back to our game Warmonger(SO) v Shadow Slayer(me)

Day 7 for me was easy - I had lots Manticores at the block and lots Sun Riders at the resources. Lost 4-5 Shades to block them and didn`t spend a single mana point because of lucky strikes and morale. This allows me  to take mana vein not on day 1 but later and thus getting more regenerations for the week. I finished turn in front of stables so it was a perfect week for me.

week2 days1-3 (Stronghold)
Day 1 is the most important imo because of how day 1 goes everything during the week will suffer from it. Typically we take that guard where the faceless were with a secondary hero but faceless are bugged and take regeneration and considering my SO needed the money and the artifact he decided to take it now instead at the end of week. He headed to the ore dwelling zone because it has the easiest stacks in it and considering he built warpath lodge day 2 it doesn`t matter that he took it slowly. Stronghold have more trouble creeping than Dungeon. Ore dwelling was maxed so he preferred to level up from the easiest elites- earth elementals and liches(single goblins rule vs shooters).
Then on day 2 he built the lodge and took full ore dwelling with 1 regeneration only. He decided to skip the guards at the keymaster for later. They were horde lacerators and because the zone next to the lacerators he will visit later there will be no movement points lost.
Then he crossed the whole inner circle to visit his next zone (where wood dwelling is). He beat everything there without regeneration - even the wood dwelling in part because he found Assassin`s Gloves in tomb guarded by Ravagers. So he has +6 Might Power +5 Luck arties and poison effect which is bugged because it appeared only in the wood battle site.
Day 3 he beat snow maidens again like he defeated the liches in the video and then headed to crystal battle site zone again going to inner circle and skipping the zone in between because it was the hardest of all 7 zones and containing only Champion creatures. Not that he will not beat them but he will begin to use regeneration very frequently and in the end he will not have mana for important battles this week - monolith, 2 keymasters and champion creature dwell. Third zone he had the minimum crystal battle site but he used regeneration because of morale. He managed to lure one stack to shoot a single goblin but it got morale and shot Jaguars along with Yuki-Onna and another half stack Pearl Priesstesses and it was enough to kill 1 Jaguar
Then the warpath lodge played a bad trick on him because his hero advanced so much that he had no secondary to split single goblins and faced a battle against shooters and this time he had to use regeneration. He has Necromancer Chasuble(20 mana) and 40 mana spec. so at day 4 he has 115/150 mana and a minor mana potion so he is not bad. Day 3 he also leveled up max reputation and level 15 - Cleave, Rampage, Resilience, Assailant 3 and now has 32 Might Power.

Days 1-3 Dungeon
Day 1 I had little money and could buy only new hero and upgrade his dancers + buy all dancers from town. Nothing else! I had minimum ore dwell which gives 1500 gold and I couldn't reach chests' guards in the ore zone. I could get more gold from guards in the center but I did that with my secondary day 2 who became lvl 6 and getting economist 2 and architect 2. I had 2 guards Faceless Puppeteers and here is how I beat them without regeneration. From tomb I got thunderblade helmet which is crap.
Day 2 secondary killed both stacks at centre and then main hero headed to the crystal dwell zone . Lucky for me I can take 4 zones that are next to each other without having to go to inner circle like my SO but he has warpath Day 3 he finished ahead
I could only fight against guards of treasure chests that were shadow panthers. I lost there all my 3 remaining shades from week 1 and still casted regeneration. Day 3 I definitely needed fresh reinforcements from castle and got 15 Manticores ( reinforcements 2 more potent and it is dangerous to play with 6 manticores ) +22 shades (more blockers). Crystal dwell was taken without regeneration because of moralling shade. Ofc only with the help of 2 stacks of manticores. Then my troubles began when facing Centaurs and Archliches - without single cores with high enough initiative to lure shots I had to cast regneration in each battle. I can use dancers vs archliches but I don't want to waste them Archliches guarded campfires+boots of the prophet(yay +1 speed). I managed to level up to 500 blood reputation from those shooters like my SO did in the video. Then tha last I could do day 3 was to take war academy luckily guarded by Kenseis(no regeneration).
Day 3 we both built capitols though I had to buy wood to do it. My SO had to trade week 1 with 2 marketplaces and I had 4 marketplaces
So far so good for both of us...

We played for a little bit and only day 4 for both of us.

My SO attacked groups of elites with no problem and then he chained all maulers, 3 jaguars and goblins from castle. Reinforcements gives 5  jaguars when he puts whole army. Only interesting battle was vs Mizu-Kamis but 4 bonus Jaguars with Heroic Charge and attacking with stand position from Furies did the trick.( That`s how I attack lilims in the other video and I don`t take dmg). He had minimum barbarian camp and took it with 1 regeneration.  Then he took the skipped earlier horde Lacerators on the keymaster and the new core dwelling where he found magic vein and filled mana to maximum. With 35 attack (12 attack from skills and  5 attack from arties) everything seems no challange for him already but he didn`t have champions in the barbarian camp zone which normally would require regenerations( fate weavers, pit lords..etc). In this zone you can find either Elites or Champions of the same strength.

I on the other hand I was thinking that I have easy day too except the barbarian camp but had bone dragons in my zone which nearly costed me regeneration but I managed without Then the other interesting battle were 80 Ravagers where it was close to casting regeneration too. After that I headed to full barbarian camp where I spent 2 regenerations. I did lots of dmg , was fun but opposing army did a lot of dmg on my manticores too and had to cast 2 regenerations to bring them back. After finishing the battle I planned the rest of the days and decided to backtrack a little to visit a mana vein for the first time this week. I had mana for 1 regeneration for the next day and I will face elemental stockpile which is hard and pit fiends at the keymaster which means they will be in more numbers. If I didn`t backtrack we would have been in the same position - 3 more zones and slightly entering one of those zones.

Text later but for now my SO cleared everything b4 monolith on day 6 - last thing he took medium size dungeon cavern with no regeneration leaving him with 50 mana for monolith but he found bracers of the druid eh

Thank you for the Day 1 video with Inferno, it's of the same high high quality as the other videos you've posted! They've really helped me to understand the AI's priority list which is very inspiring.

One of my reasons for postponing getting tactics is that I like using different abilites, both for variation and as a way to increase my hero's reputation. Prolonging battles against shooters to use one ability more is a good strategy in very competitive games but it's also a time stealer, a bit repetitive and in other contexts it disturbs the flow and balance in a game.

In other words, I'm going to experiment with how getting tactics early can be combined with having abilities for every turn/situation.

I also think that life drain is better than regeneration, both in the early game especially with cerberi and later on when there's a hard hitting key creature leading the creeping. Mass life drain can save your army for another battle when there is more than one enemy faction. Regeneration is always needed against undead and as a backup plan, but only my tears heroes use it regularly.

The "elite bottle neck" I mentioned in my previous post is the day(s) when you're not strong enough to continue your creeping and have to find another way, for example by waiting for the new week's growth, making a detour to level up or to buy/pick up an artifact.

Your SO solved it by taking a slower route and starting with the weakest elites. It's interesting to follow your games.

I really think that regeneration is much better than life drain but to prove this I must show you a number of replays. For example champs at monolith gang on an elite stack and its numbers are low - they can`t be raised with life drain. Regeneration is also more safer but I leave it up to you to find out all the positives of regeneration.

Yes, playing against a stack of 1 shooter is as dumb as playing vs horde of stone golems with 1 dryad in heroes V. Every time this is done by my SO - I get bored very quickly and grab my Ipad to see what`s on facebook (girl stuff sorry).

In that game he didn`t lose a movement point because when you backtrack to the flag every time it doesn`t matter in which order you take them.

day7
The most difficult guards ever possible at the monolith and phoenixes+panthers even week2 is a cake for dungeon.
medium utopia stronghold
My SO beats it without regeneration and gets 4th piece of assassin`s set - cloak of darkness, assassin`s boots, moonblade and assassin`s gloves.
phoenixes+shadow panthers
Shows the new mixed guards in area after monolith
full utopia shadow slayer
Maximum utopia and I got the dumbest 2 relics that exist and out of anger lost 2 movement points

fast forward to final battle. What can I say the last utopia where I found boots of the waverider that gave me 5 init decided the game. If he had +5 init more than me he would beat me badly instead. Poor decision to take Counterstrike III for my SO as I attack with no retaliation round 1. You can see how I counter his Guardian Breastplate with Blizzard I had on scroll.

I don't know why our duel specialist insisted dungeon are weak. They don't seem weak at all. Main units flying, faceless puppeteers, chakram dancers, find weakness...sounds unbeatable. Shadow lurker spec. is bad because crucial part of final battle lasts 2 turns and eyes act last in turn 1. On map games dungeon start with level 1 special so u can hide chakram dancers.

new game!
Warmonger(SO) v Vindicator(me)

We played only day 1 because Monday is always a tiring day and then watched Vikings. Very good series btw my hero is named Lagerta . So my dear SO had 2 hard battles especially vs ghosts and I had very easy battles vs shooters so no replays. I got +1 MP boots and he got +2 att gloves and both of us can upg. to Furies/Vestals day 2.

secondary hero v Stalkers

ghosts day 1 3 stacks hard

day 2 Vindicator
Easy battles v shooters. A little tricks here and there for the rest. When I came across the triangle( Mizu-kami, Demented, Core dwell) at the end of video I decided to fight first demented on day 3 to get level 5 and then with Pressed Attack it will be easy to clear the rest. On latest version you can`t get level 5 before triangle so you have to choose one of 3 battles to level up.

day 2 Warmonger
Not so easy battle v Stalkers. Kappas had luck with terrain. Other battles my SO shows very good use of reinforcements on a single fodder. In battle v Stalkers he uses that trick too. He decided to fight hard battles in triangle on day 3 when he recruits dreamwalkers. Again he has that much wood(8).

Day 3 I fought everything in the triangle spending one regeneration v Mizu-Kamis and all my fodder was gone including 2 of my Praetorians. I decided to head first to clear elite dwell building then head to mines because my losses will increase. In this way all enemy stacks will attack my birds who have more def rating.

Day 3 for my SO was easy when he bought dreamwalkers and cleared all his mines.

ANY COMMENTS?? I will stop posting anything I guess!
day 4 I suicided. Since our 6 months break I forgot how it wasn't cakewalk for Haven and combination of regeneration for Mizu-Kami, moralling shades and full crypt did the job. Maybe haven should start with 40 mana spec. hero. Will try it next time. But haven creeping is slow and boring.. Our next game I will be sanctuary might v warmonger. When I was warmonger once in this matchup I crushed my SO now let's see if the matchup is balanced.

Congratulations for the you've got! This is a really great thread which is invaluable for anyone who wants to understand this game.

The videos are very inspiring

I wish that I would have time to play more in May, but it's also time to begin writing a 15 pages long report in a course I'm taking.

I'll start posting here again as soon as I've played enough to add something interesting. I need to continue practicing my Inferno skills but would also like to try Haven more.

My advise is to first master the map with something easier - Sanctuary/Dungeon Might for example. The difficulty goes like this -
Sanctuary/Dungeon - Necropolis - Stronghold - Haven - Inferno.

Try to reach those goals:
1st week - get castle day 5-6 and all mines + core and elite dwelling
build all of the creature building(if you don`t build all 3 elites in 1st castle build the last one in second castle) in both castles and duplicate your main core for creeping.
2nd week - take all in the circular area, including every battle site - wood, ore, crystal, barbarian camp, elemental stockpile etc. and kill guards at the monolith to get even more resources.
This allows you to build all fortifications in 1st castle + capitol + champion creature. In second castle build up to 2nd fortification and champion creature there too also don`t forget the rest of the creature dwellings. This one will be hard if you don`t clear enough battle sites.

This will be a good setup for week 3 which is all new and lucky for you that you don`t have time now because you will play on the latest version.

New game War Master(me) v Warmonger(SO)

I will post only videos but with detailed explanation and will refrain for now on game reports. My SO did two amazing battles here is the first one. The other one is at our work computer hihi. Tomorrow I will post my comments why he played like this.

pearl priestesses at crystal mine argh but eastern crystal mine so he had elite creatures from dwelling.

First I will explain INITIATIVE BAR
When goblin hunters who have 45 init are facing shooters there are 3 possible outcomes
1) GH init > enemy shooters init
All GH stacks will go before all enemy shooters. I`m sure I showed such a video before where I move forward all single GH to attact enemy attacks.
2) GH init < enemy shooters init
Only vs Fate Weavers and Centaurs/Centaur Marauders. You can`t use this tactic in this scenario
3) GH init = enemy shooters init(most interesting case like in the video)
GH and enemy shooters will be alternating but who has the first move?!
If GH have the highest init in your army then GH move first before enemy shooters.(This is useful for other faction because in our case we can`t play without Fury(init 50))
So if you are necro/haven/dungeonc/inferno you can split single goblins and when facing Coral Priesstesses make sure your highest init in your army is that of the single goblins(40).
If you have a unit that has more init than a single GH enemy shooters will move first before the first single GH. Then you should attract the topmost stack`s fire with a higher init unit. In worst case scenario when you must not spend mana at all you can split a single fury. To add up to this point I will remark that you must put only single goblins and not a big stack of them because it will play between the enemy shooters and you are forced to suicide it or take lethal damage on Furies. After attracting topmost stack`s fire you move all single GH to attract dmg and that moves us to our second point..

POSITION

You know in advance that you must attract topmost stack so you position Jaguar warriors in the top corner and move them only a few squares so they only attract topmost stack.
I`ve failed when placing single GH wrong. Position them in the middle and not spreaded so every single goblin can attract all enemy shooting stacks. I`ve failed when one goblin who attracts 2 of 3 stacks is moved last and the 3rd stacks shoots Furies

IN BATTLE TACTICS

Nothing really to add here if you have done the setup perfectly and didn`t lose anything first round the battle will play on its own. I placed reinforcement on Furies and blocked the undamaged stacks which do most dmg. I let other two shoot me which were depleted. Even if that 2 stacks have attacked with melee Furies would have survived. I moved Dream Walkers to attract attacks later but I killed them faster. But is this is viable tactic. If a shooter can reach Furies and Dream Walkers they will attack Dream Walkers. Just make sure they can sustain all damage from the stacks. If not move the Dream Walkers in the reach of only 1 stack and let the other attack Furies. In this way you spread dmg on the top stack of Dream Walkers which presumably don`t lose even 1.

Do u know how to fix the c++ runtime error. It ruined our save and Heroes can't start on work pc anymore.

Ooooh hey, I think that c++ error might be the bug I was having back in the day. If it is, then it has to do with a small program the game installs automatically - it won't even check to see if you have it already. If you did and it was on a different version, then you'll have that program installed twice and that's the problem.

Memory's a little foggy though, I'm sorry I can't give more details on how to fix it. I don't even remember the name of the program.

I have lots of very good videos but we are too busy to post here. I fixed the error by reinstalling windows. Reinstalling the game or the visual c++ didn`t work. Extremely stupid bug !

Ah, so it was the visual C++ thing!

If you checked the complete list of your programs, you would've normaly seen that there were 2, different versions of it. Obviously reinstalling the game and or what comes with it won't fix it, it's just going to maintain one version and not even touch the second. You have to go and manually remove one of them, preferably the one H6 didn't install.

We are off work so no time to write here But we finished our game and this time the final was close.

He misclicked with the furies turn 1 but I would have won anyway with all those luck and morale.
