The way I see it, two lineup slots per tier were more or less reserved: Skeleton and ghost for core, lich and vampire for elite. I'd find it hard to imagine a necro without those, except maybe the ghost if we got some other kind of wraith.

So, what would we rather see as the third core? Ghoul? Mummy? Dark acolyte? Zombie? Revenant? A bone construct? I wouldn't want to see the zombie again and I'm not a fan of human cultists. Ghoul and mummy seem the only to stand out, revenant maybe if we think of it as an armoured corpse and redesign the vampire to rely more on supernatural powers rather than armour/sword. Doc already features different vampire types.

I miss mummies, would love to see them as elite troops Btw just how many of us were fine with ghouls? I found them a nice alternative to the zombie, just as tough but offensive and more mobile.

Ghouls are "Freaking Yeah" compaired to Zombies, for me. More mobile,
more savage, overall more agile if I might say.

It's a question of how you do a unit, and I think they never got the Zombies right. I mean - what do we know about "Zombies"? What makes them special? Exactly: Every living unit they kill in a direct way becomes a Zombie - and fast - and every BITTEN unit becomes a Zombie as well, it just takes longer.

So, true, Zombies are slow, and Zombies are meatshields, and Zombies don't use sophisticated weapons: they might swing a club, and if a victim goes down they start eating/biting it.

This translates into low damage, but they would absorb every killed unit as a Zombie, starting next turn, while wounded units couldn't be healed or resurrected; instead, if the attacked unit won the battle, the wounded unit would simply be lost, while a wounded unit that stayed wounded (battle lasts) would turn a Zombie after 3 turns or something.

And suddenly they become somewhat interesting.

Ghouls on the other hand eat corpses. So while they could probably trained to kill, they'd do it to feed. Imo, Ghouls might have an ability like the Pao-Kais in HoMM 5 - feeding on corpses, raising themselves OR feeding on corpses and gain a lot of strength and agility.

A spider is not an undead horror or something. We had a spider in the game, a champion, the Namtaru/Fate Weaver - what a descension from there to a core creature that's - what exactly?

Lastly, Mummies. As a Core unit, I don't see them doing more than Cursing enemy units; they feel wasted.

I also don't see a Reaper&Apocalyptic Rider like creature having ANY place in Ashan Necropolis: what is that supposed to be, actually? It looks slapped onto the line-up, and unnecessarily so. There would be the Namtaru and the fantastic Wight/Wraith from HoMM 5 - no need to reanimate the Bone Dragon or invent some Asha-alien mythological Dark Rider on a Pale (skeletal) Horse that doesn't fit.

Overall impression is that of a ragtag bunch of freaks without any unifying theme.

Too bad skeletal Liches don't exist in Ashan.

What about the liches from H5?

I most certainly do remember them, but, as discussed before, their appearance in Heroes 5 is now considered to be non-canon (which is a shame in my opinion). The chances of seeing skeletal Liches again in Ashan are extremely low.

Here are two Marzhin quotes that discuss skeletal Liches:

Marzhin said:

Canonically speaking, skeletal liches are supposed to be a rare occurence -- they are usually the result of freak accidents. Officially Sandro (Void experiment gone sour) and Moander (mixing the wrong poisons) are the only skeletal liches of Ashan, at least the only ones that we know of.

Marzhin said:
What I could imagine are Shantiri Liches, super-old Undead priests that are actually so old they look like mummified skeletons. But maybe that would be too similar to the Tomb Kings of Warhammer.
In any case if such creatures existed they would be neutrals, not part of the "modern" Necropolis.

I agree with you, but you know, the problem is that many Necro units could have similar abilities. For example, Vampires are healing themselves with attack, which results in resurrecting fallen Vampires. Zombies would "resurrect" even beyond their starting stack size, but that would still be very similar to Vampires. In H2 Ghosts had ability like that, and there is actually no reason why they couldn't get that ability in H7 too.

Also, the problem is how would Zombie's ability work? What happens when they attack a Demon, or Treant, or Dragon? Would they increase their stack size too or not, and if so it wouldn't make sense for Demons or Dragons to be Zombified while just being represented by usual humanoid Zombie, nor they would be the same strength.

About Ghouls, I agree, that would make them more interesting. I had a mixed feeling about H6 Ghouls, for example I disliked that they are tough and fast creature, in my opinion they shouldn't be as tough as Zombies.

I would like Mummies more as elite choice instead of Lamasus. Like that you could improve them a lot, and give them different abilities instead of just cursing the enemies.

I like mummies, but I'm not sure they fit necropolis that good, they may be better as neutral units, or you need an egyptian faction.

for the 3rd core, I'm not too sure, maybe a raised animal would be refreshing, well, we got skeletal dragons and horses, but I was thinking maybe a dog or wolf. not sure about the abilities.
