Trine 2 maybe played in a 2D plane on the X and Y axes, but the graphics is undoubtedly 3D, So, not quite sure where you are going with this.
You're missing the point.
See Sal's comparison slightly above ? Now imagine the H3 screen is redrawn and polished as a Trine game. Just imagine the adventure maps, terrains, dwellings, castles, townscreens, creatures, spell effects etc you could make out of it.

Then it'd be in 3D and no longer 2D, since Trine is a 3D game...? Maybe it hasn't been explained appropriately enough, but I don't see what you mean by this.

Furthermore, the screenshot of H7 has 5 different units, which their equivalents in H3 were rather lack luster, if you can see my reasoning that horseman = H3 Champion upgrade (heck, he even LOOKS like the Champion in the reins, shield, armor, and lance, which looks less comical and more utilitarian than H3's spiral/tiered lance design), crossbowman= H3 marksman (which seemed to suffer a high degree of Jesters-outfit disease in H3) and Sword bearer = swordsman/crusader (I actually like the Crusader a bit more, looks more heroic) along with golems (Do golems need to looks exactly like humans? Cause H3's were just that, stone/iron men. Not much originality there) and gargoyles.

On the other hand, that H3 screenshot is filled with the more extravagant units made to look the most powerful (various dragon types) and mostly an entire faction whose equivalents were being voted over, so their graphical assets aren't even made yet for H7. There barely even IS a comparison between the two screens.

If you've got real style you mix 3D battlegrounds with 2D characters...

1000+ handdrawn HD sprites per character.

Japanese style might put ya off a bit but ya get the idea.

Japanese style isn't off putting, but that does actually look good. However, the mix of 2D characters on 3D backgrounds looks... odd.

Protolisk, I think you should maybe consider subject under another perspective

Okay maybe this will clarify : Trine 2 features 3D graphics, yet its gameplay is restricted to a 2D plane.

AH.

I see now what you mean, as a graphics versus "play area" perspective. Like, in Trine, you can SEE the X, Y, and Z axes (graphically), but only move through the X and Y (game-play). Except, I would say in counter that either all of the Heroes games were always in 2D (as they only move about in the X and Z axes, and flying is just a means of moving "through" obstacles that would otherwise obstruct 2D movement, staying in that X/Z plane) or they were always 3D, as walkers could only move in the X and Z axes, but flyers could move in the Y axis temporarily in order to move around such problems.

Either way, H1/2/3/4/5/6/7 are all in the same perspective in this case, game-play wise. They all had varying sizes of X/Z planes, and flyers could either pass "through" obstacles or above them temporarily in the Y axis.

Graphically is where they differ, as H1/2/3/4(?) are 2D sprites, and so far H5/6/7 are 3D models. This was what I was arguing, as I thought that was what this thread was about (the art style of the creatures and play areas).

I don't know if it's as much of a 2D vs 3D thing, as it is the size & contrast of a creature compared to its surroundings.

In H6, and apparently H7 now, the creatures are miniscule, difficult to identify & assess, and are drowned out by all of the surrounding graphics.  H5 did a pretty good job of retaining the size and contrast of H1/H2/H3.  Whereas you didn't have to utilize the 3D aspect in H5, I did enjoy rotating the camera (especially with the intimidating Titans, etc).

Even in Kings Bounty the units are sizeable, and the detailed graphics are kept for the background and not the battlefield.

If they don't fix what they've showed us so far in H7 then I'll be greatly disappointed.

This I agree with. And it honestly shouldn't be much of a change. Just take the dimensions of the model and scale em up from 110% of current sizes(for the crossbowman) up to 130% (for the gargoyles) and  see how much better that'd look.

And in which games do you think we see units better, in earlier games or Ubi ones ?

I dunno. I suppose you, as in you, not the general "you", can see the earlier ones based on that question. I can see them all just fine. It's not a dichotomy for me.

For the record, I really dislike H1's art. It's too bright. H2 was  better. H3 is my favorite of the earlier games, where it had a balance between color, recognition, and detail. (except for Bone Dragon/ Ghost dragon. Where are its arms amid its ribs? The answer eludes me most of the time.) H4 was a train-wreck. They looked nice... until they started moving. H5 was pretty recognizable for me, like H3. H6 had too much color-themeing.

Honestly, I rank H5 and H3 pretty even in terms of color/details. H7 right now is just slightly below that right now, but above H6/2, way above H1. H4 isn't really on this scale.

H5 looks definetly better than H6 and H7 (so far...).

But nothing tops H2 & H3, imo. It is much more clear there.

im not an closed minded person but there are some weird things going on here.

importing thing here is art. and H5 tried to change it by moving towards anime style. and i dont like it. its has no connection to past at all.

it should have been like this:

Not gonna lie, that is one sweet looking H3 HD angel.

For the life of me, I still can't call H5 "anime" or whatever, but that is beside the point. The style did turn people off a bit, and that's fine. However, it's pretty apparent H6, and now H7, aren't following that direction, so that point is a bit moot.

The anime looks of HV were bad indeed, for the most recent games it has positively changed, yes.

The problem of Ashan it's their stupid changes. Cerberus with 2 heads. Liches turning into Vampires and aging backwards (WTF?). Blue Phoenix. Cyclops...
