Random Map Generator

I don't know what the exp pack will contain but it should definitely have a RMG.  I think a RMG is the most important
asset in a game like heroes. (else, the replayability is seriously in doubt....)

This is probably one of the biggest wishes for an expansion pack. Any thoughts on specifics you'd like to see for it? For instance, I'd like an option to choose the template once in a while ... certain of the H3 templates leave me cold, and others can be a real challenge (Dwarven Tunnels on higher difficulty settings with monsters set to 'Strong' can be a real pain ... I once had to try and get past a big stack of power liches just to get enough ore to build up my town..that's the kind of thing I like at my most masochistic. )

hehe, I loved that.  I couldn't play 3 without having monsters on strong.  It was great being totally incapacitated for like 3 weeks, still with only a tavern in my towns.  No fort, no creatures, trying to kill level 3-4 creatures with a level 2 hero and a small amount of level 1-2 creatures

As for an expansion, I will not pay for an expansion to give me the RMG.  I expected it to be part of the regular game, so if they do that again (like heroes 3) I'll be very angry.  It was included in 1 and 2, so why omit it in 3 and 4 and then make people pay for it?  I'm sorry to say that I will more likely pirate the expansion than pay for something that basic.  If the expansion is good, I may buy it, but if it sucks and the only good thing about it is the RMG, I won't.

As a Random Map player of old(TOH).
I couldn't agree more!
How people use to play the same maps over and over and over and over and over(you get the point) is beyond me!
Desert War! Anyone from TOH remember that old chestnut?
Random Maps are obviously the fairest way to compete against other players, unless you like to spend your spare time playing a map 378 times till you get it exactly, step for step perfect LOL.
Bring on the Map Generator!!

I hated the Random Map Generater, it was the worst thing about H3 I think.  It never created fair maps, and was no display of skill whatsoever.  Basically it was a Luck Generator, not a Map Generator IMO.

that's sort of the point.  Instead of spending time "learning" a map to death, you had to take what came to you, making it much more challenging.

Or unfair.  All depends on your point of view I suppose.  If three castles and 4 goldmines came to your opponent and 1 castle and a bunch of trees came to you, wouldn't exactly be my idea of a fun game.

Perhaps, but it was usually rather balanced, as random maps go.  I always saw an ore mine and a wood mill close to each town, and each hero only started with one town.  On a L or XL map there was usually a good balance of mines/mills/resources within a decent distance of any given town.

Perhaps, but I was tainted by the experience.  I think at the end of the second or third week on a L or XL map I had something like 10-12 towns and only 1/4 or 1/5th of the map was discovered.  That is just ridiculous IMO.  Maybe I owe it another shot, but from my memory my experiences with the random map generator created awful gaming experiences.

Edit: changed first second or third to second or third.

I'd try again.  Chances are, the AI guys also had lots of towns in that scenario, although I do wish that you could specify something like "no more than X towns" in the options.  When heroes 4 gets the map gen, if they have lots of options like that, I'll reconsider my unwillingness to pay for it

Anyway, the random maps are unpredictable, but usually aren't horribly unbalancing.  So if you like Heroes 3 a lot, but got bored of scenarios and campaigns, give it another chance; the random maps can add a lot of replayability to the game.

I am a really well "hardcore" if you will MP player when it comes to heroes 3.  I played way back in the 3rd, maybe 4th season, dun remember.  But I would never dream of touching a horribly designed campaign game for MP, and with jb239's tons and tons of maps (and a few other mapmakers), one would have to try pretty hard to get bored.  That and every person you play usually has some new trick for you to learn

I have always played the game for the skill, and if randomness/luck overwieghs skill, i will turn away from it (much like how the lack of shadow cursor adds unncessary amount of "unluck" to battles in heroes 4).

I also agree the Random Map Generator sucked in Heroes 3.  I ALWAYS  create maps from scratch, but I always have them somewhat unbalanced.  Like one part of the map has a lot fo crystal and gem mines while other sides have more artifacts and less powerful creatures or something.  And I ALWAYS put random monsters, artifacts, and resources on the map.  And the player can choose his town, not have to be forced to play a particular one.  That makes the game much more interesting.

I don't care about it that much. The quality of a map that was random generated is nowhere near the quality of one that is designed by hand. I'd rather play the ones they included.

Heh, creating your own maps to play... doesn't that sorta spoil the fun of playing?  I mean, there's nothing to explore...

Anyway, I got bored of heroes 3 very fast until they had the random map generator.  4 will be the same, so I am only putting 15-20 hours a week into the campaigns... hopefully they'll have a RMG before too long.  If not, I hope AOW2 has one...

The quality of the maps I care about more than the surprise factor. Do you really expect the maps to be well balanced (or even looking good or distinctive) when random generated?
