Poll Question:
Free Cities faction - good or bad?

There are many Free Cities in Ashan - Stonehelm, Karthal, Eridan's Crossing, Hammerfall.

Still, they never had much importance in Heroes series - and since we're unlikely to get many non-Heroes games in the franchise, since Ubisoft wasn't satisfied with Legacy's sales, this once again pushes aside these cities, which are actually often important for Ashan's history.

There are obvious problems however - one of the first ones is whether this faction would be simply a recap of Haven - after all, Free Cities also would be using regular human military.

They could be designed differently, but there are still some units that are bound to repeat itself - infantry, marksmanship, cavalry... Wolves would be somewhat innovative, but not after Heroes VII... literally the only non-Haven unit I can come up with is battlemage, like the ones in Dark Messiah, and that too would be too reminiscent of Haven's priests and Academy's mages.

Thus, this is a hard decision, one that is hard to make without having an interesting lineup. What do you guys think?

Responses:
I would like to see a Free Cities faction.
I don't think there should be a Free Cities faction.
I don't care either way.

We've reached the point where nearly any new Faction would be welcomed, a breath of fresh air.

I would hate to see a Haven 2.0, but mixing humans with creatures and other races could work. Sort of a mercenary Faction allied with some mythological monsters.

I think Free Cities and Haven together would be too much. It's one or the other, so maybe have Free Cities instead of Haven for one game, with some different mythological creatures ofc.

Well, it would be kind of a less religious Haven without Griffins and Angels, unfortunately... Not to mention that Free Cities are short on mythological creatures. Faced with these circumstances, Haven indeed would have to be out.

Still, on the other hand, I can actually picture other races than humans, like dwarves, finding their way into the lineup - after all, Free Cities are known for bigger racial diversity.

Problem is, it is difficult to make this kind of faction without making it feel too ordinary...

I would really like a Free Cities faction/

Long ago (at least two years) I posted somewhere on this forum (or it might have been another, it have been awhile) my take on this faction.
My take was essentially a sort of merchants-mercenaries (gold focused) faction with barbarian allies and mostly Greek (as well as some near-eastern and late-medieval to early-modern northern Italy) influences with mythological creatures and artistic style (Pegasi Riders, Rocs, Hoplites, etc.). The main reason for this decision was the fact that the Greeks had a lot of known air-based mythological themes and creatures, and the Free Cities city-state league structure is obviously influenced by both Ancient Greece and Renaissance Italy.

So basically, a mostly Ancient Greece and Renaissance Italy faction with a strong air theme, involving a lot of maneuvering with high mobility, flying, ranged attacks and slowing debuffs, with a large focus on earning and using gold.

I think that a Free cities faction would be an interesting concept, but I would not like it at the expense of Haven.

Tbh,I think free cities could be something, but I'd say they'd need to diversify it a bit more from haven(if they didn't include haven in favor for free cities,it would simply look like the new haven to many and not like a real new faction)

I think going into a bit darker direction could help, maybe they could be based more around england, with a van-helsing-like lineup with units like witch hunter, pest doctor or werewolf.

I love the Free Cities concept, granted though it works better in a different type of game. I can't see Free Cities waging full scale war, unless it is for their independence.

But yes overall I would like it if the story is made well. It should be built along volunteering for everything, they indeed are free to do as they please. There would be a strong link to Ylath, but it would not dictate everything they do. I would definitely want Thunderbirds to associated with them. Also there could be Wind-Mages, they would have studied air magic maybe independently from any Wizard Scholars.

The faction should not have any ambitions politically, except for more freedom from others meddling. Trade should play a huge part, don't know how yet.

It's not entirely free cities, but that's what i had in mind (the idea of free cities) when making this Faction.
