Scripts - I need help!!

I am extremely disappointed with the new Script function in the Heroes IV Map Editor. It seems that you need to have prior programming experience to use it. Furthermore, there is no help file included with it. I was hoping that I would be able to do the same things with it that I could do in WOG.

Okay, actually, my main complaint is that I cannot change Hero Portraits. I knew how to do this in Heroes III, you could name a file a specific way so that it would replace the current portrait of a Hero. There was also a script to do this in WOG.

Now, however, for storyline purposes on Maps that I'm making, I need this same feature. Unfortunately, it just doesn't seem to havve it.

I also would like to be able to edit creature stats.

On the Russian site, Absolute Games, they had a program available for download that would extract the Heroes IV music. If I could get a program like this, except one to extract the portraits, I could find out how to rename the new portrait files that I want. Unfortunately, I cannot program at all. Any takers?

Thank you.

I've never done much programming, but I think it's not that hard. You have to use a lot of that good old try and fail technique, because there's no help file, but otherwise it's very good.

There's no way I can see to have made it easier and keep the power. Now it's an extremely powerful tool, there's almost no end to the usage of this baby.

The portrait problem, I can't help you with (not that I helped out a great deal on your other questions either, but, oh well)

Edit well

Yes, the thing is though, that I don't even know the first thing about programming! Is there some specific application you have to have first to program? I'm hopeless...

I don't think it takes programming skills. You have to understand words like IF, THEN, OR, AND and ELSE, though. If you could elaborate on your problems a bit, then I might be able to offer more helpful help.

I don't understand words like IF, THEN, OR, AND, and ELSE, though, so that is probably my first problem.

I just found out last night how to open up a DOS window and attempt to write a program, however. I think I should probably go to the library and get one of those "Basic for Dummies" books...

I dunno. I guess I'll just fiddle around a bit, and then come back here when I have more distinct questions/problems.

I think you should complete a single scenario, (bigguns playground has some scripts) so you won`t ruin the fun and then open it in map editor and check what scripts are in that map. Then try to figure out what they are and make a test map yourself and try to remake some of those scripts(make similar ones). I`ll try this soon myself, hope it helps.

hmm after hearing everyone seems to be talking about the editor i thought id give it a try. Now im no where near scripting it yet since even the small maps quite big to fill.

Heres my plot:

Its based on a strong farming community that has grown huge and wealthy and because of this they have attracted barbarian raids from the mountains to the north, However this is not the problem as they have always been able to buy a small mercenary army to deal with the savages, no now its something much worse that is ravaging the countryside and eating crops and farmers alike in vast numbers. No has lived to see the beast yet and now live in constant fear day and night. Things have got so bad for these people that even the dead are not aloud to rest with undead being spotted in the fields at night and graveyards desecrated. With funds running out they put up a reward for the problems to be dealt with and thats where you come in. Taking control of the small amount of troops and a lot of scared peasants its up to you to save to idiots.

(Three problems to deal with that could all be connected, i dont fancy your chances.)
The end

Really nice plot but 3 victory conditions sure will need some scripting. Really suggest that you carefully explore escape from  bigguns playground(and play it first too so you understand what everything does) Than check carefully it`s scripts and make some in your map. In map editor at the bottom of tge main screen you can choose which map to see(you can have more than 1 map at once open) so check it at one map, make something similarin yours and so on and so on...

The scripting abilities are quite limited, yet they have enough variety for a in-map scripting.
BTW: you can't actually "script" the thing as some kind of a program. you just choose action from a meny, and fill in the needed details.
I, myself, am currently playing with it. To make several Win/Loss conditions is easy, when it's totally clear what will it be, i.e.:

Kill a monster/hero - fo to the "Events" tab of the monster/hero's properties, there choose defeated, and at the "script" tab choose Win/Lose (also you'll be asked to choose the player. If you want to set/change the message that will come with the victory/loss, choose Sequence, and there:

New...  -->  SET LOSS/VICTORY MESSAGE --> write the message --> OK --> New... --> WIN/LOSE

It's really simple

So...can I take that as I can't use the script editor to edite Hero portraits?

I have a question:

I you want to remove an obstacle through a script, what exactly should you write in that box you get? presume I'd want to remove a tree.

In the "adventure objects" section in the mis.. what ever that word was, it is the lowest subsection, the is a "dynamite stick" . Place that where you want something to be deleted. Place multiple with the same name to delete more objects with one script. The in the scripting screen you can choose an action: delete adventure objects and there you can set which "bomb"(or "bombs' if you place multiple with the same name) will be "blown up".
