hc really needs a better search engine

hc really needs a better search engine.

1. we can't search sub-forums; the search covers every subforum, which leads to scanning a lot of unnecessary pages.

2. we can't search just a single thread(for example: HoMM3, erm scripts).

3. when searching for anything now, the search feature CLAIMS to find "# pages with X found". HOWEVER, as soon as you click on the 2nd page, you are sent back to the initial search page, minus the results OR the search content you typed.

i've dealt with this issue for a long time now, and it's about time i brought it up. i'm honestly surprised that no one else has yet. if they have, it's not like i'd be able to use the search engine to find out.

Never dealt with it because I either used google, used main-page search function or looked for what I needed by hand.

try "searching by hand" in a thread that's over a hundred pages long, herry.

Maybe. But don't get surprised if the forums get closed for a week, if not more. This isn't just simple coding.

i could care less. the need for an adequate search engine is more pertinent. i can occupy my time elsewhere. i don't even need internet. it's only when i'm trying to stay awake that i need entertainment, and can't work. i can get some sleep, and have all my waking hours filled with the endless work i have yet to do. i can set the Forge project aside, and pick up where i left off with literally anything else. my list wouldn't get done in 4 years of steady, undistracted, uninterrupted work.

Talk about practive, you probably won't. And this is something I noticed each time I'm doing some work: When you can't get something is when it becomes really awesome, like how I am with QPs for example

I couldn't reproduce the problem you are describing - clicking "2" (second page) in search results correctly takes me to the second page of search results. If anyone else gets the problem Fred is describing let me know.

The main search certainly lacks some functionality. However, search functions involve trade-offs between additional data storage (search indexes), functionality and search speed / server resource use. I may look at adding search by forum or thread functionality at some point if it can be done efficiently.

There is a thread title search that I've added more recently - top right of homepage and forum pages. It can search individual forums but only looks at thread titles, not thread content. This function is mainly for jumping to threads quickly and finding threads by broad subject.

i know of that feature; i've used it before. nice feature, too. but when i'm trying to search, say, the erm thread; what i try to find is like finding a needle in a haystack. and it's much worse, when i can't get past page one in search results. that particular issue doesn't just occur for me with page 2, but every page after the initial one. and the issue is prevalent in both internet explorer and firefox.

the ability to search a particular subforum, instead of the current shotgun-blast search of all subforums, would be a great benefit. modding results for anything outside of heroes 3 is of absolutely NO use to me. and not by thread title, but by post content. sometimes, the information one needs isn't even in the right thread.

i posted that exactly how i meant. i do care, just not as much as i'd care if the search engine would be fixed. it IS possible for me to care less.

Post a link here to your search results from which you can't navigate to Page 2. To do this just do the search then copy and paste the URL from the web address bar.

page 2 of the search results look like this.

i get the same exact page in both firefox and internet explorer. i'm not entirely sure when the search issue started happening, but i'm pretty sure it was since the server changeover.

If anything, I see the same as Fred. On the link he gave, when I press page 2, the page is empty. Using FireFox by the way.

I confirm this, Google Chrome here.

Although you can navigate this anomaly by simply putting &pagenumber=2 or the needed number at the end of the link.

and it doesn't matter what i'm trying to search for; i always get the same result. i try clicking the links for page 3, 4, etc, it's always the same result. if you hover over the links for page 2, 3, and 4, you can see that it doesn't lead to the intended page before you click on it.

Searching for specific users is also a huge pain in the arse. I fully support this.

Lack of post preview and deleting selected text after trying to place it in bold for example also activates my rage-mode.

Dudes, it's 2015. HC really needs an updated BBCode, it's really ancient compared to all active forums around. Given that HC is the most active Heroes community nowadays.

Ah, now I could reproduce the problem. It was related to double quotes being present in the search string. This must have gotten broken when moving to a new PHP version with the server change. I fixed it - test and let me know if there are still any problems.

Let's keep this thread on topic.
