Poll Question:
integrated music tracks by poster (poll)

this topic started in another thread; i'm bringing it here. it refers to posters being able to add music to their posts, so that it will play on the page. so far:

Good question actually, I tried to look it up myself, but didn't find any reference in the rules section. I recall it was an issue a couple of years ago or so where people found out how to do it and started doing it a lot which was a real nuisance, but apparantly it was not added to the formal rules section.

i think as long as people don't abuse that power(like anything else they could abuse), it should be ok. i like the feature, myself. it has a great potential to add some flavor to HC(it could be used for fun threads; i've been wanting to make a party thread in the vw, complete with different dance tracks for each page, and trance gifs).

i only wish there was a way that it couldn't be overwritten by a following post on the same page(like how herry threw some crap song in with my banana boat thread and screwed it all up). because that means, that someone can ruin the effect the poster before them were going for, by posting a song after them. and i think that's penalty-worthy, if you ask me.

==========
so, this poll will be actually be on how the feature will be added to the CoC(by making sure that the feature isn't abused). but first, this question must be answered:

1. do you think posters should be allowed to add music to their posts, as long as they don't abuse that power?

(edit: more and more, it is looking like this feature should be restricted to music/party threads in the vw. which i think everyone would agree with.)

now, as far as making rules in the CoC for this feature if it is voted as a positive feature, we need to specify what "abuse" of this feature would actually be.

i have added here my suggestions for breaches of music-posting conduct. feel free to comment on them, or to add your own.

(edit: poll option 2 would be spamming, anyway)

Responses:
overriding someone else's music by posting THEIR music on the same page
creating multiple music threads/posts outside of ONE post PER PAGE in a music thread
obviously, posting offensive music that breaks the CoC
music-posting to derail a thread(ie., music that doesn't belong in that thread)
using a song to antagonize anyone(again, a breach of the CoC)
all of the above

As long as it is a rare occurrence and it is not put in threads that do not need or want it than it is fine. Although what music people may find offensive will vary so there is always that to worry about. Youtube videos or links are much safer in my opinion.

People browse HC from different places: home, work, public transportation, etc. Since they don't normally expect an outburst of sound on a forum they don't normally mute their device. Therefore, I'm against any autoplaying music in a thread. If someone wants to add flavor to a thread he's welcome to embed a video and let the members click it if they wish. That will also eliminate the abuse you mentioned, since no one will force you to start another video that will overlap the first one.

the stuff that can be found offensive on this webite is in the CoC; that's already covered. what i'm trying to cover would be abuse of this feature.

People can be...sensitive just because it is not in the COC does not mean someone may not still be offended by it.

that's a good idea, actually. it would solve the issues, and posters could use it however they liked.

the only drawback, is that you would have to click a link, which would detract from the idea of a party atmosphere. i think party threads should be specifically exempt from this idea. it would make sense: you would know that this is a "designated party zone", and opening that thread would lead to music, like it would if you opened a door and physically entered into a party environment.

I am in favor of autoplay and completely opposed to banning it. There should be regulations to keep it within reasonable limits.

well I frankly think my thread was a lot funnier with the silly music randomly appearing out of nowhere, so I favor this feature when used harmlessly lol

I am completely opposed to autoplaying music. Usually, when I browse the forums, I open each thread with new posts in a separate tab and when one of those has a music link on autoplay, it's hell to find out which one.

Besides, I visit the forums both at work as well as from home. At work, I don't want to draw the attention to myself (as it quite loudly points some neon signs my way that I'm not actually working at that moment) and besides I usually have the radio playing. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's two pieces of music playing through one another; my brain just short-circuits or something. It's like the feeling when someone scratches a blackboard with a piece of chalk (which, surprisingly, doesn't quite have that effect on me).

At home, it's pretty much the same with regards to music, only then it's my personal playlist.

I consider autoplaying music on the same level as flashing ad banners (especially when they overlay the webpage I am interested in) - which is one of the primary reasons for me to have Ad Block+ installed.

So, a definitive and resounding "no" from my side.

@fred
You don't necessarily have to click a link that will open somewhere else. You embed a visible youtube video and people will click it if they want to.

@verriker
I have seen good and fun use of the feature, but more often than not it only annoyed me. And part of the reason it annoyed me was an inconvenient timing of the music. That is something the original posting can't control, so I'm not sure if there's a truly "safe" way to use this feature.

what if it was in the CoC that they had to use a "cd" icon in their post icon, so that it would be easier to identify each one? not that that would matter, because if the feature was there, you wouldn't be able to turn it off, but rather just mute your speakers.

maybe it could be an on/off button set in profile settings, so that everyone could be satisfied? you'd have to be logged on, though; and not lurking. so maybe not the best idea, lol.

The problem as Maurice described it (and as I have encountered it myself), would not be solved by marking a post, because the problem is in finding the thread.

but that's the reason i am trying to get it as an addendum to the CoC, so that the feature can't be abused without a mod stepping in and editing the post that breaks the "abuse" parameters, or being penalyzed.

I'm always logged in, so that would be a feature I could live with.

so maybe we just restrict this feature to party/music threads? would that be good for everyone?

I said that a poster of the music can't control when a fellow member will open the thread. How do you propose to fix that?

Edit: Restricting the feature to easily identifiable threads might work, I suppose.

i'm not sure what you mean. does the music reset for everyone every time someone opens the thread? because i'm not aware of that as an issue. i would assume that it autoplays for that person, just like if they visited the source website. or am i wrong in this assumption?

That's just it. Surfing the web has its own daily patterns that are habits to us all just like surfing through radio channels or zapping TV does. Songs (any audio) popping out unexpectedly is not part of that. So most of the time, the audio just bursts in inconveniently. I may be surfing through the threads while someone next to me is sleeping, I may be surfing through the threads while the speaker volume is very high, I may be surfing through the threads when I have a hangover, I may be surfing through the threads while there is already music in the background (the most common case) and so on... And unless it's a masterpiece of a joke that totally requires that audio, it will only annoy me.

What I meant was that I can open the thread whenever I like, including at 2AM with a member of my family sleeping in the next room. And if I do not expect to have any sounds I do not use headphones/mute the PC. So while the music itself may be harmless, the timing of its activation may be bad and that is something the poster of the music cannot control because it does not happen on his end. So it is difficult for the poster to minimize the potential damage.
