What I meant was that I can open the thread whenever I like, including at 2AM with a member of my family sleeping in the next room. And if I do not expect to have any sounds I do not use headphones/mute the PC. So while the music itself may be harmless, the timing of its activation may be bad and that is something the poster of the music cannot control because it does not happen on his end. So it is difficult for the poster to minimize the potential damage.

i see. so just limit the feature to party/music threads, then. that's reasonable; i think everyone could benefit from this.

btw, the "banana boat" thread i created, was a party thread. hence the music and the gifs.

lol, it's just something i've been wanting to do. since i can't afford to party in real life, i'd bring the party to HC.

i was going to make a rave thread, but the hc server keeps acting up. i've been busy with other things, besides. but i'll get around to it. hopefully this gets ironed out, so there won't be any future issues with it.

IMO should be allowed in the VW, as for the other boards, maybe speak about it beforehand with a mod, then everything should be fine.

We've had this discussion before. Personally, it really irritates me when I open a thread and I'm blasted with music. I browse a lot in places where it's quite annoying for that to happen. I find it as irritating as news sites that blare advertisements before the rest of the page even loads.

Should rules against it be added to the Code of Conduct?

Well, that kind of thing certainly isn't respectful to other posters so if I was being really hard about it I could interpret it as a violation of the CoC as it stands. That said, do we really need rules for this kind of thing? Can't you guys just be sensitive to the fact that it's simple rude posting behavior and avoid doing it because it's the polite thing to do? Why do we need a billion different rules to force people to be civilized?

i'm trying to find a middle ground with the use of this feature, which is why this thread was created. there are people here(myself included) who would like to be able to post musical content(and we would delegate it to certain kinds of threads in the vw, strictly). the only reason i wonder if an addendum could be added to it in the CoC, is because it is a feature that people could use to potentially abuse one another or ruin threads(which would lead to loss of the feature entirely, which is something i and others would be against).

requesting that the feature not be used entirely is a little much, don't you think?

the discussing of this feature is to clarify what would be respectful, in regards to using it. the way that we have discussed how to implement this feature would suit everyone, i think.

First of all, if you can't find which tab it is, grow up and use Google chrome. I mean, let's be honest, it IS better than whatever browser you will use... And it marks the tab that contains music with an audio icon.

Anyways, I did use this feature a couple of times, and I have a few ideas about it:

1. Allow it for april fools, but no loud music, I mean, that really is annoying.

2. Allow it on normal threads as long as there is nothing offensive, scary, loud or otherwise unintended or unwanted.

For example, you can make a theme for a thread, if it is really long or informative to help people with it, and include a warning or notice. I mean, it's not that easy to go through pillars of text with nothing but text and images. For example, in a thread about HoMM V, they could use a quiet version of the main menu theme of the game, or something like that.

I'm not with banning or completely allowing this feature, I'm with allowing it in a regulated way. And I'd personally like it if a group of mods discuss about the possible rule for this, or a single mod... Or however you make rules, how do I know?

Anyways, just use a quiet and safe for work theme, for example, something that goes like this:

So just because you like a certain feature, I have to change the browser I've been using for nearly a decade? Not a snowballs' chance in hell, Herry.

You can't control this aspect when you post it. That fully depends on local circumstances of the person opening the thread.

This is also something you can't really control, just like offensive posts. They only vanish once a mod catches it but until that time, the topic remains active and intrusive.

That's personal. I don't have any problems with reading walls of texts, provided it's informative or entertaining. Furthermore, it still doesn't remedy the fact that people might be playing their own music and then the thread in question forces another piece of music onto them. I'm listening to the radio right now and have no interest in listening to something else while reading or writing on this forum.

personally, and especially on the internet, I'm always prepared for random error or notification sounds to come blaring out of my computer (like any computer),
so I never ever take it off mute or headphones at any awkward moment, be it at home, on public transport, or slacking off in work, honestly that's just plain common sense to me and so I used the feature in my thread lol

it's a bit like leaving your phone off of vibrate mode to me, yes the phone might randomly ring and embarrass you, but are you seriously going to blame the caller? no, you blame yourself lol

for those reasons I don't accept your judgement that it's inherently disrespectful, rude or uncivilized, people have their own norms and I didn't do it to annoy anyone, and it's a region where a CoC note explaining "this goes against common sense, please don't do this" would have stopped me from doing it lol

What I don't understand is why the hidden autoplaying music is better than the video Herry posted. It does the exact same thing but let's every reader decide whether to use it or not.

Agree with Geny. Whenever there's any autoplay on the page you are browsing, you are taken away a sort of control over what you were willing to browse, given that you clicked on the page to read something, not to listen to (unless explicitly described so, and I'm referring to browsing this forum). I also browse in many different places, and at work is not the best time to pop up songs out of the blue, specially because sometimes I like listening to my own and more often than not I have not ear phones.

I view this forum at home. I ALWAYS have music playing because music is my life. There's a lot of music out there I hate and a forum is supposed to be text. If I wanted to listen to some rubbish track I'll just randomly go on youtube.

It is one of the most annoying things that this forum has when people do that. I don't know where it is and I instantly go back a page and avoid a thread if I hear any music which is a shame because the thread might actually be a good one which is ruined when I have random music overlapping with the music I personally listen to.

A resounding never in a billion years should anybody do this again. It isn't fun, it isn't funny, it isn't enjoyable, it's just irritable and frustrating.
