I'll have to disagree. Since this sanctuary is in a different world, Mediczero has the freedom to create her units as she wants. This is the benefit of being a fantasy writer, you can redifine anything you want as you want since you set the rules for your own world.
Apart from that though, knowing that there are many more units to be used out there is also good because you can combine elements from different units to make something new. The name as such is sometimes the least important. What is important is how the sotry of the unit is coherent and well written so that anyone can understand it and also how it is going to be portrayed according to that description.

Well jokes aside, imo. if Sanctuary should become more successful, it probably needs to have more recognizable mythological units and less strange japanese spirits, particularly the humanoid ones. I think the Kappa and Kirin worked really well, though.

The Yuki-Onna isn't a strange Japanese spirit, it is one of the best mythological monsters out there, it just doesn't suit Sanctuary at all, and the fact that the Spring Spirit was also in the town destroyed every awesomeness that the Yuki-Onna otherwise had to offer.
I disagree with the very-known mythological creatures that could save the town, Mermaids are so 1970. Time for something new and fresh (and 100% of the other sea creatures from myth are more awesome than simple Mermaids)
And of course the car STOLE the name from the mythological monster, as one of the fastest water monsters in any myth, the name made sense i guess.
Increasing forever in popularity (which is a great thing) is the Scottish Dobhar-Chu, these water dogs/monstrous otter horrors look cute until you see their humongous over-sized fangs.
