Yep, all my guitar player friends are very excited about that stuff, how Vai is now even better than himself. No disrespect, but I think he is “the guitar player guitar players like.” That is a very hard thing to be, still, it’s not my idea of what a guitarist should prioritize.
I dont like that late 70’s, 80’s sound anyway. I’ll take T. Bone Walker over Eddie Van Halen any day.

I just admire his playing skills and his desire to still chart uncharted waters. Some of his music I like, some not so, but it's always pretty entertaining (especially live) and the technical standard is high.
(Guitar) sound is for me generally nothing separate - usually every style and every kind of music has a general, distinctive sound. I saw an hour long interview with EVH in which he explained why he sounded the way he sounded and that he basically built everything himself, his guitar as well as the amps. Which is to say that Van Halen has been pretty creative in terms of sound and actually invented a couple of things (like waxing the wire in pick-ups).
I couldn't say that I dislike a specific sound in general.
