Beyond WoG: recommendations
Basically, I'm no longer familiar with HoMM3 modding scene, I basically stopped caring in the WoG .58 times.
However, seeing that the newer HoMM games simply lack what I loved about HoMM in the first place... I'd love to give HoMM3 another go again.
I absolutely loved WoG Commanders (<3) and WoG stack exp system (even though it felt badly balanced ), but WoG offered too many weird options and modes that made me feel like playing a game with no rules. It sucked... like, turning on berserker flies and turning the game into "i win each game with 7 stacks of 1 unit" paradise
.. but I'm pretty sure other players noticed that too.
I was hoping that in the years following WoG 58, some other mods were created, based on WoG and expanding it, but also, definining a more serious gaming template, without the sillyness of some of the not-so-good tweaks and modes.
Are you aware of what's hot currently? want to bring me up to date?
Hope commanders and stack exp is still around

WoG/Era gives lots of joy, but first you must uncheck all wog options and next launch maps with one or two enabled features to discover what you like/dislike. For example Sagamosa scripts give you hours of fun to play all advanced levels - even they're overpowered and buggy. But all these possibilies are outstanding.
Currently hottest H3 is Horn of the Abbys - fan-made add-on which continues AB/SoD way to expand H3 universe.
You can try VCMI - h3 code written from scratch by fans with pack of interesting mods. Unfortunatelly, engine for now if far from finish, so expect lots or errors, crashes and dumb AI.

Well, there is Conquistador mod, which offers extremely high bonuses to AI to balance existance of emerald towers, commanders etc.. I can't find the exact list of changed, hope that sal, the creator of mod, will come and provide it, as I am curious to see it again.

If you want pure WoG action with insane commanders and all the jazz, then I'd recommend you to try The Dragon Slaughter

If you want to get back to a very pure and to the tradition HoMM3 experience Horn of the Abyss is excellent.
WoG/ERA depends a lot on you, like avatar says you need to spend a bit of time at first exploring all available scripts, maps and mods, the list is quite huge, but to my experience is the most expanded HoMM experience that exists, especially considering singleplayer, there is some quite challenging maps with great design that I am confident you will enjoy. Since you want Commanders and XP system for creatures (did you see my poll about in the Altar btw?) it should be safe for you to explore.
VCMI is extremely promising but not quite there yet.

<you should explore Era mods thread, it has about anything that was written for.
Personally I don't play Hota because it doesn't allow interface mods written for Era and also I am too used to high speed and all the tweaks and reduced clicks of Era.
And if you feel random maps are too easy, Conquistador mod yeah (for random), you will feel the taste of death.

But that's exactly what they miss.
I know they bet on MP community but the three stacks rule allows to rush the map from day 1 in most random maps. If AI isn't buffed progressivelly, 200% difficulty represents just a very small delay in constrution, if so. Most of the times, by day 4 I have 5 or 6 heroes on map and still managed to build something usefull every turn, from then on all they have is more reserves, I already have a better exploring rate. So, for a reasonable player the difficulty was basicly capped at 130%, a way to increase AI's value on singleplayer is mandatory.

By not interested I mean "the way I did it".
Since they have access to proper code and not wog-soup they would have to do it the clean way, no cheats for AI but change the behaving code. Wog is extremely dirty for such things.

Ops, guess I prefer fight this AI with more prims and better skills and specialties then an AI that can REALLY set his priorities right and fights like a BOSS.
OTOH, they must know if AI has any code for combination artifacts, something I'm convinced 3DO never did and believe is way worst then not coding Berserk.
I even believe AI doesn't know how to use Dracon and Gelu, maybe it's cause the upgrade is expensive but I frequently find Gelu with larger stack of Grand Elves then of Sharpshooters
