How much modding can the game stand?
I was wondering, since I'm not upgrading my HOMM3 since Shadow of Death, what about installing all these new cool mods?
But then I wonder, can I actually do that? For instance, if I install the mod for the new rampart town can I install Horns of the Abyss nonetheless? Can I add the Covenant or Grove towns after I modded the game and added Cove? And is it true that Cove and Forge aren't compatible? What about all the small mods, like those that add new battlefields or objects? Can they crash or glitch with the other mods?
Long story short, how many mods and which mods could I install without breaking my own game?
Anyone knows that?

HoTA, ERA and VCMI are not compatible with each other and shuld never be mixed. HoTA was not meant for any additional modding, either. Other than that, everything goes.

So basically if you chose to install HoTA you should have no other mods at all, right?

Hota has no mod support. Era/wog has mod support.

What a shame though. It'd be amazing to see how the games looks like with all the mods ever implemented on it.

One proper mod can be more amazing than 499 mods smashed together.
Beside, if you use ERA, you can play with dozens of mods simultaneously activated, if quantity is what you want.

Personally I have three folders for Heroes III, one with Hota, one with Wog/Era and all its mods, another one with VCMI.
If the latest you played is SoD I suggest you first check out Hota, as it really feels like a genuine expansion as if made by NWC, and the HD mod too.
Then when you want to feel a bit more exotic, get Wog/Era but it will require some time at first because there is so many mods and options, be sure to try out some custom maps too.
VCMI is the one with the most potential imo but is still WIP.
I agree with you that, it's a bit of a shame, not all platforms could be united and deliver everything at once, like get Cove and Forge and play with creatures gaining XP, but there is reasons for everything...
