When tragedies are reality checks

Good day to all.

This past night, in the first moments of this very day, one of Brazilian soccer teams came down when their plane crashed near Colombia.

It was Chapecoense, a very dedicated team who came from D series back in 2008 and climbed steadily the stairs to A series and were now to play the Grand Final of South American Cup, a first-time ever for any teams from the State I live, Santa Catarina, in the south of this country.

I'm not a soccer/football fan, but a family fan, a friend fan, people fan. Many of those who lost their lives were known people around here, 'too young to die', many journalists (I work in a place with journalists, so they basically know each other pretty much), and that sort of tragedy touches beyond the boundaries of trivialities of personal preferences and grabs hold of our spirituality and love.

The Colombian team called Atlético Nacional, in a very beautiful act of acknowledgement, resigned the title in favor to Chapecoense.

Most of the team was in the plane, where 81 people were aboard. 5 have been saved so far (it was 6, but died later), 3 of which are players, 1 journalist and 1 woman from the crew. Some players and other people from the team delegation were not in the plane, but I cannot avoid but to think how hard it is for them right now, and how difficult the path ahead will prove to be. And for those who directly survived the crash (one is under surgery right now due head injuries and traumas, another had an amputated leg, and another had spine injuries), there's this barrier of reality to face when they get on back to their lives, if they survive.

Either those with religion beliefs and non-believers alike are stricken by this sad event around here, questioning things like "God delivers and God takes", and still, for those whose beliefs don't waver, "God will mourn their hearts". I cannot understand that, but I respect that, and I too hope, in my limitations regarding religion (although I'm pretty much spiritualist somehow) that God provides strength for their reasoning and spirits, in which the love which hold them to this world is strong enough to justify their survival and can still bring happier days.

I am aware of many bad things happening around the world, some are downright sick. But each of us with our own reality, with our own things at range. Thus, a sad day indeed for people here, and do hope and wish the best recover for all affected by it.

This is terrible panda.. Like you said, regardless of personal faith, the important thing is the strength believers draw from God and how it helps them cope. I guess we subconsciously want things to make sense, to be part of a plan or to at least have someone to blame. But those people are now gone, just like that, possibly for no reason at all. Things just take their course and we learn to deal with it.

My deepest sympathies...

Ty all.

As it seems, although no one is very sure of the real causes, it is very likely it was for lack of fuel. There was no explosion, no traces of fuel around the wreckage ... another thing to point out is that the insurance does not cover accidents caused by lack of fuel.

So, let's see how it all unravels.

Latest news show that 6 survived. A 7th, the main goalkeeper, died a little after being rescued. 3 players (1 with head traumas, 1 with spine injuries, 1 with a leg amputation), 1 reporter (with many injuries on all body) and 2 flight crew.

The coach's son, who was supposed to have taken that flight, forgot his passport and couldn't go. The city major from the city where that team came, Chapecó, also would have gone, but he cancelled his trip to attend some local demands.

All in all, mood is pretty somber everywhere. It triggered memories from another nasty disaster which happened here at South on a night club around 2 years ago, where more than 200 people died due lack of a proper safety infrastructure.

I also think it's very very tragic, but it is not something I am good at handling / talking about.

My condolences to all people involved in this disaster.

It also reminds me of how terrified I am of flying. Perhaps there is less risk to it compared to many ordinary tasks, but if something relatively simple happens (like a mechanic forgetting some tail screws) maybe 1 or 2 will survive out of 300 people. And to imagine the crisis in the air as well, the minutes just before you know something terrible will happen. No, flying is not my cup of tea.

Heard about it this morning. I'm a soccer fan although I had not heard of this team before, but no matter, thank you for the info PandaTar by the way.

Not much I can say in the face of a tragedy like this except my condolences. It's terrible.

Chapecoense was a small team around 2008. It has steadily gained positions and titles since then. It was the first time a SC (Santa Catarina) team would play for the South American title. Usually Rio, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul or Minas Gerais teams are ahead.

Meanwhile, Wembley has demonstrated its condolences to Chapecó.

Latests news, 72 bodies were found so far. With another 6 alive, it makes only 3 missing.

@OhforfSake
I'm also a bit afraid of flying, but mostly the taking off and landing feelings. Still, more afraid of being hit by drunk driver on my daily activities, going to and from work, or going to my gym. I'm always and ever under threat of those things.
