Axenar? or Axenot?

Some Star Trek uberfans went on Kickstarter and collected 1.5 mil to make a fan film.  CBS and Paramount sued.  Here's a good article on the topic.

Here's the problem, as much as I want to side with the fans I think CBS and Paramount are right. Yes CBS and Paramount are dicks but since they shelled out for the rights they should have sole access to the Star Trek universe for video purposes.

This is a really intriguing IP issue. Anybody want to try to persuade me that Axenar should go ahead?

While I agree that they hold the IP, I am getting pretty tired of the level of protectionism that these companies display. It's something that irks me on a more general scale, where they implement all sorts of impediments and blockades for users and fans alike. Why not simply exploit these areas instead?

If they'd invest a little money in this initiative, in exchange for an entitled opinion about the overall story arch and such and having their name stamped on it, but otherwise leave the initiative to the fans to develop, you'd get a lot of goodwill from a lot of people. As it is, a lot of former Star Trek actors have shown interest in participating in these fan initiatives, Tim Russ being a prime example.

Yeah, I agree. However, I don't know how many people actually contributed.  If this was .3 million people each contributing $5 then it doesn't seem so bad.  It's also puny compared to the amount of money that moves through the entertainment industry.

Again I agree.  It seems like these companies are abusing their properties by squelching fan participation.  It's kind of like a crime of negligence.  I can't help but get the feeling however that Axenar crossed the line.  I've thought about this some more and I think it's really the 1.5 million.  If all these people on the project were donating their own time and money it wouldn't even be an issue.  I wouldn't care how much IP they ripped off or stole.  This has money trading hands though, which I think forces me to come down on the side of the corporations who paid money for some licensing rights under the understanding they'd have exclusive access.

One of the points the Axenar crew brought up was that CBS/Paramount didn't actually own rights to the Star Trex universe, only the familiar characters, plots, and settings (spaceships for example).  I really wonder if this is true.  I think you'd have to dig into the contracts to actually find out.

I wasn't terribly impressed with Star Trek Beyond. The film lacked ambition.

The new films aren't bad but they just don't have the same awesome goodness of the Borg or Romulans in First Contact or Nemesis.

I don't give a **** about Star Trek, but I'm fascinated by the idea of people fighting over things that don't exist.

From this point, the case looks even more bad for myself - It is characterizing the everyday stuff of which is full the minds of this peoples, that have contributed money to such nonsense. . .

About the entertaining industry, even if we do transport the ~1/10 of the whole resources in this industry to the proper direction, perhaps the life on Earth can be little bit better. .

This is only my own, subjective thoughts.
