PC Advise

Hello everyone i have a question regarding my computer and before doing useles things i'd like to ask people with more knowledge about this stuff.
So i have a relatively old mainboard with only an am3 socket and my old cpu( Athlon II x4 630) is often getting quite hot when gaming (80-90 °C) resulting in the cpu lowering the frequence to cool down and the games having >10 fps for several seconds. So now i have the following options: 1. new cooler 2. new am3 compatible cpu or wait and get new mainboard + cpu. 1. i have the standart cooler installed which i have heared is quite bad, so would a new cooler be enough to play games like overwatch or csgo without framedrops? Or do i have to get 2. a new cpu. I'm not sure but i read some am3+ cpus are supposed to work with the old am3 but i don't know which. So i thought about getting an Athlon II x4 955 black edition. Would it be significantly better to justify spending money on it? Or is this useless and i should just get a new mainboard and work from there?
Thanks in advance for anybody answering^^

It depends on your budged, how much are you willing to spend? The stock coolers which come with AMD processors are both noisy and inefficient, you can find much better ones for 30-40$ which will keep the CPU temperature at 35-40 degrees in Windows and up to 50-55 in the heaviest games which an AM3 CPU can handle. If you have enough money I'd suggest moving to an AM3+ motherboard and getting some FX-series processor (both CPU you mention are fairly old models, pretty much obsolete by today's standards). If not, keep the current setup but change the cooler. The middle ground is a better AM3 CPU with a new cooler but that is only a short-term solution, better invest in something which you won't have to replace for the next few years.

If they can really keep the cpu this cool i'll go for a new cooler. Right now i have 45-55 on windows and chrome and up to 90 on some games so if this can be avoided it's great.
Yeah i know, in general am3 is outdated but i don't have the time and money to get a new cpu + mainboard at the moment :/ Thanks for the advise.^^

Hmm it shouldn't get that hot, if it's old I assume you've changed to cpu's thermal paste at least once or twice right? (it goes on top of the cpu and then the fan on top of it). It rarely needs changing though and if applied properly it may never need change, but too much or too little can contribute to overheating so before making major changes to hardware I'd first make sure that this isn't the issue.

Also ensure that there's proper air-flow so make sure the hardware and fans are clear of any dust.

Did you try cleaning your PC in first place? Simple dust can cause overheating.

Yes, i'm cleaning my pc of dust regularly i learned about that in my early years.. xD About the thermal paste i never touched that it's how it was when i bought it. I guess that will be taken care of when i get a new cooler.
