When your government tries to make crime legal

Long story short, the government decriminalized official misconduct as long as the prejudice is under 44000 euros. The biggest party in the country has 45% of the parliament and has a majority of 52% together with another party. The Social democrats, the remnants of the communist, has a long story of corruption and unlawful acts. Back in 2012 they tried to overturn the president by replacing the people attorney's, the president of the senate and the president of the deputy chamber, as well as changing the constitution in a matter of days. They failed as the constitutional court ruled the referendum they made to dismiss the president as unconstitutional.

Now, the leader of the social democrats has a suspended sentence due to electoral fraud in the said referendum. The estimated prejudice was about 22k euros, so figure it out. He really wants to be prime-minister, but with his sentence he can't become the prime minister because the Romanian constitution forbids it. This is actually the second attempt of the social democrat leader, first they tried to change the constitution in order to allow a sentenced person to occupy the position of prime-minister.

The second time they actually did it, using the pretext of overcrowding in the prison system, they promulgated a law that pardons certain offenders and convicts over 60. The law was in public debate for a few weeks, but last night, at 9 o'clock in the evening, they passed the law as an emergency ordnance, despite over 50k people protesting several days in a row and the statements of the civil society, the SCM and the president condemning the act as unlawful.

DW said:
he measures, adopted late on Tuesday, will decriminalize cases of official misconduct in which financial damage is valued at less than 200,000 lei (44,000 euros).

Romania's leftist government, which swept into power in December, says the move was needed to get the Eastern European country's criminal code in line with recent constitutional court rulings.

Critics claim it is a bid by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu to protect the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) chairman Liviu Dragnea , who is facing legal proceedings for about half that amount.

The new measures, which take effect immediately, include pardons for convicts sentenced to less than five years and reduced sentences for prisoners over 60. They are likely to result in the release of at least 2,500 convicts, ostensibly to ease prison overcrowding.

What's the result now? More than 250,000 protesting in front of the government:

Can't be as bad as what the Commies did in 53, just released "every" prisoner whether political or the common law-offenders, that must've been fun for isolated communities, bands of brigands roaming the countryside.

You can say that again LW.

I wonder if the protests will change anything. Though, from what I know about the PSD, I doubt it.

If you're referring to the amnesty after the paranoid Ossetian kicked the bucket, then you're a bit wrong.

the severe criminals (jewshooters and the lot) were left to die in Gulags, or were amnestied later.

Also kudos to the romanians that rise up. Here such a thing wouldn't be possible.

i'd say that lw and dd should be out there in the mob, but i doubt the mob will get anything changed; other than having their clothes reek of tear-gas.

The protests are peaceful, the police doesn't even wear riot gear. There were some retards with firecrackers, but the crowd itself policed them.

i don't know if that's a good thing that everything's peaceful, or a bad thing that maybe the crowd isn't even close to being taken seriously...

or maybe the police are on the crowd's side? that'd be awesome.

People even bring children to teach them about free speech and democracy and as for policemen, they are citizens as well, I bet they had enough of this crap too. It's very important for the protestors to be peaceful, otherwise the social democrats will have a platform to defend, there have been some agitators introduced in the crowd, but without any significant effect.

EU foundation money sinks into the pockets of the "elite", so don't be surprised here. Here in Lithuania, we had "plain field infrastructures" developed with EU funds.

Also, I'd like to ask, how big is the pension of an academic in Romania? and do they get it increased based on their degree(extra if you're a professor and such)?

They are not first. All people history il like it. In West we have, "legal" abortion, euthanasia. Kids for homo. All of it is criminal. Murder or child demoralisation. And its "legal". Romania is not the worst criminal country. US is more and more. But its bad ofcourse.

Around the same here afaik, though I think My father in law gets a bit more, since he's a habilitated professor. A pension is supposed to allow people to live in dignity, not be some spare change. It's disgusting.

I just have a single advice, or something - beware of radical changing and moves, Balkans is the place over the Earth surface where too many powerful players involved. And if you will look at history of Balkans, you will realize that anything can be easily turned into a bloody hell carnage , with a very bad result for a peoples.

From my own very sad experience , it is better to avoid yourself to get involved in the movements of the any side of conflict, if it is possible better to look at this from aside.
