Games we play

Here's an original topic but since I can't bring myself to play another minute of H4....

It's been a long time playing H3 for most of us. For me, playing ToH and H3 is a great combination of tactical challenge and online friendships that isn't matched by any other online experience so far. Some other games that have caught my attention along the way (feel free to add yours

Single player:
Fallout 1 and 2 -- probably my favorite games ever.
M&M 6,7 -- 8 didn't grab me and I hear 9 is not so good but these two were serious time burners.
Icewind Dale -- best music ever.
Baldur's Gate 2 -- great game but I never finished it.
Ceasar 3
Imperialism 2 -- really great game.

Early multi-player:
Civ2 and Alpha Centauri -- classics
Master of Orion 2 -- second favorite game of all time.

In the pointless addiction category:
Hardcore Diablo II

Thoughts on persistent online games:
Tried several to the point of forcing myself to play... painful, stupid and tedious is as good as I can describe my experiences here so far.

High hopes dashed upon release:
Pool of Radiance -- buggiest release of all time (okay, maybe Anarchy Online barely beat it out....)
Fallout: Tactics -- this could have been an awesome multiplayer game....
Arcanum -- this game really pissed me off.
Heroes 4 -- I know we're all deperately trying to like this game but it's got serious gameplay problems. A real let-down imo so far. And don't tell me it's bugs and H3 was the same way on release. It took all of 2 minutes to see that H3 was an amazing game. I'm still wondering how H4 could be changed to be playable.

Look good (and on my HD) but don't play:
Empire Earth
Emporer-Battle for Dune -- gotta love the 3D engine on this one

Better be good:
Neverwinter Nights

Hope will be good and get released:
Masters of Orion 3

I know will be good
Icewind Dale 2

===========

Cheers -- Salpinx

wing commander series-- when wing commander 3 was delayed, I decided to pick up this boring looking game called heroes of might and magic 1.   I got hooked to it.  If it werent for the delay in WC3, I dont think I would have ever played heroes, and there would have been no ToH

First person shooters, like max payne, vampire the masqurade, castle wolfenstein, and medal of honor, waiting for Unreal 2.

RTS games, like starcraft, red alert, c&c, and best of all, Total Annhilation.

Others, like Myth: The fallen lords, Sacrifice, Alien vs Predator, Black & White, Mechwarrior 4, Fifa2001, Nascar 4, and so on.  (I have and played them all).

Perhaps this is a bit too "old school"  but I personally loved the X-COM series.

Sure it was a bit tedious in that you had to wait for somethings to sort of "come to you"...but the battle tactics were EXCELLENT for the time (especially on the X-com apocalypse...3DO could sure have learned from lessons from microprose)....in addition technology upgrades occured in timely fashions, just about when you got bored with a weapon you discovered new ways to kill them pesky aliens.

Besides that:

CIV series must have sucked away 2 years of my life.

Master of Orion(s):  whew, what a game(s)!

and although no one will agree with me:  Tiger woods 99 for multiplayer rocked

That's my 2 cents.

I really enjoyed heroes 1,2 and 3 and I still do. I enjoyed Master of Magic as well, its a lot like HOMM4, but much more simple and the graphics and music are not as great. Might and Magic 6,7 and 8 were good, but The interface in might and magic 9 is terribly complicated and its boring as well.... somehow I managed to hit my grandfather in that game, then i proceeded to drown myself... all this without even encountering anything serious.

I think HOMM4 is enjoyable actually and to me has about the same addictive level as heroes 3, but then I guess its not everyones cup of tea.

salpinx, MoO 3 is going to be pretty bad if you were a fan of the first two.  They lost developers, and are supposively not making it as big and like MoO 1 or 2.

The 3 games I really enjoyed : Warcraft 2, Rayman and all extensions (best music I ever heard) and HoMM serie.

Do you like to play shareware games too ?

When I had a old PC I looked for sharewares. Some of them were so cool I still play on my new PC. I also like Action Supercross (very technical) and Blobby Volley (very fun in 2 player mode).

most been mentioned already

AoK TC my fav right now, even slightly before H3- but I was devoted to H3 for about 2 years, only had AoK less then a year, I bought it really late scoffing, "oh an RTS, blah!"

Now I'm waiting Age of Mythology, MoO3, Ice Wind Dale 2, and just picked up Throne of Bhaal... played BG2 6 times completely, 2 evil characters, 2 neutral, and 2 good. Most fun in RPG since Betryal at Krondor.

Panzer General 2- great game! Played it with H2 and right before H3. Starting to play it again after not for 3 years... still fun, great game.

Very old game called High Command- total wargame, or even simulation possibly- you play WWII in European Theater, Brtain, US, France, Russia, Italy, you control every aspect if you want. Economy, Diplomacy, Resource assignment, Production, Research(US, can get rockets and bomb, Germany has chance for the bomb, and almost guranteed rockets, etc...  Seperate taskings for Land, Air and Sea forces- can assign wolf packs to hit allied shipping... all options are open. Even the chance thru bribery/propaganda or inciting a coup that Russia or US sides with Axis. Axis can follow Ribbentrop/Moltov pact and divide Poland, or Germany can invade N Africa(or anywhere France, or Britain lacks treaty with) first, get resources and R&D for a year before attacking France with heavy tanks or something. Can also cause coup in any other minor country including Vichy France. This game should be updated... awesome hotseat! Was at the time of 800 baud modem though so no online.

Original MoO&MoO2 great games. MoO first game kept me awake more than 2 days straight... finally won on impossible with Mrrashan- good ole days.
