Map Drawing

While I was working on my first XXL map I made over 400 new objects and spent hundreds of working hours trying to realize all ideas I had and ideas  I got in meantime.
Such a big map requires a long and patient designing process. During that period (almost 1 year) I had a lot of  time  for different kind of experiments, trying new stuffs,  improving my map making style, found some new tricks, and finally - I discovered a brend new method of   making maps for HoMM3.
I found it gives unlimited opportunities of creating a HoMM3 maps.
And nonetheless I used it a quite a lot in my map, I just scratch the surface.

I call that mapmaking method – Map Drawing, or Drawing on the Map.

What is it about?
Well, instead a putting (old or new) objects on map surface, you can create rectangular pieces (patterns) with whom you will cover some  map area.
First you have to make a screen shot of that area in purpose format (number of pixels, by side,  must be multiply of 32), and then in some program for drawing (Photoshop, Gimp, or just Paint) you can modify it by redrawing, or adding pictures you want... You can use collage technique, or just editing existing picture by using filters, brightness/lightening, changing colors...It's all up to you and your creativity and imagination.

Think that it will be more clear if I show it on concrete examples.

Here are some moments I made with this method.

and here it is last part deconstructed

Suppose - You've got a catch.

Great designs. I don't really understand the part about new design type, if you only mean divide bigger than 220x220 defs into smaller squares then assemble them on maps, the whole "composed objects patch" is made from. Or maybe I misunderstood.

Edit: ah ok, I understood, you take screens of the map then divide screens into 220x220 defs. The backside is that when your new objects, already having a layout attached, will not be of any use for others mapmakers, in case they need other layout, imo.

Yes, you are  right.
Same as standard object, the biggest pattern can be 256x192, so if you want to cover map with bigger picture, you have to split it in more smaller parts.

Problem is if whole patch is animated, because there is no way (or I don't know for it) how to synchronize all parts as one.

You can't synchronize animated defs, I already tried for Atlantis, no way to control when a def first frame starts.

That's exactly I want to, but don't know how.

Some evil laugh with screams in background...or something like that.

Also, I want to have specific sound on many other location on the map.

Open Heroes3.snd in Data folder. All wavs starting with LOOP[...] are about objects which play a track when the hero passes by. The track can have any length, short or long, but better not too long because when you go away and come back, it restarts. Such objects are gazebo, water wheel, creatures dwellings, etc etc, just place them on a testing map then go with hero near each one to identify the corresponding tracks. Then change the music for one of them and make sure that object is not appearing in your map, except when hidden by your new town inferno. Should not be difficult with custom maps - you have about 60-80 different possibilities (don't remember now exactly but there are a LOT of those objects).

Then remember to create a new snd lod(pac) for your mod, with the new sounds. Don't replace the originals because then it will be a mess to release mod.

I will try, but you know how annoying I could be while trying to learn something new about mapmaking

Actually is not that hard, just download 300 spartans and StarGate Atlantis then look at their .snd files. Basically you will find thousands of wavs with all effects, so use them as database to pick from. I wish I had such thing when I started, gathering sound effects is damnt long and tedious.

Great! We need more like this! Really you should create more objects.
How about castles in clouds? Or Steam Era map?

fred,

it is consist of six pattern which I repeated few times...and most of them are animated (by myself)

see what is under, when I remove first two

EDIT: I was even thinking about incorporate velvet magic landscape you mentioned in your object's topic

if you want to do it, just capture it, then divide in several pieces, make an object of every particular pieces... Only problem could be copyrights

In H4 you can syncronize the start of animation by putting them on a brush.

H3 doesn't have brushes, but I supposse if you try enough times (putting and removing), you can syncronize the anim.
