Quote:

Football (American Football) which I'm sure that many of you have NEVER played (yet seem to have an opinion of or claim knowledge of from watching) have no basis for a valid point.

Well, I wont lie and say I've played, but my younger brother plays on one of my countries best teams (not that that says a great deal, my country being Norway). So I've watched him play games, and I'm generally a sport fanatic, so I've watched the Superbowl whent it's broadcast here and also other NFL action. So I think it's fair to say I know the game both from a spectator and a players point of view.

Quote:
If you have ever played it you would know how ignorant your statements are. It takes intelligence, speed, quickness, strength, skill, and a mastery of tactics to be good at it.

I would say that the intelligence, skill, and mastery of tactics is what the coach(es) need(s). The players only need various physical attributes, and the ability to obey orders. My brother is what I believe is called defensive coordinator or similar, and he's got this giant playbook with yes, hundreds of plays he has to memorize. But that doesn't take any other skill than good memory. And the other players don't even have to memorize the plays, cause once my brother has received his signal from the coach, his team huddle up, and he tells them what to do.

In soccer, a player has to be able to make decisions on his own, and there are not hundreds, but infinite ways to score a goal. Players have to rely on intuitive understanding to be able to make suprising plays and create scoring chances. Plus, in soccer, you've got a goalie, which means that even though a striker has outrun the defense and is through on goal, he still has to beat the keeper, so that leaves a moment of suspense, opposed to in am.foot., where the running back can run unhindered into the td area.

Quote:

I have played soccer and it is simply not at the same level.

Not in the USA, no! Come over to europe (or better and shorter for you, go to South America, Brazil or Argentina), and we'll show you what soccer is all about.

Quote:
Sure, there are tremendous athletes playing it, but less is required of them than any other major sport (except maybe baseball).

That is the wrongest statement I ever think I've read. It's the exact opposite. In soccer, you can be as fit as anyone on the planet, lift cars over your head and outrun Ato Boldon or Maurice Green, you can be a tactician equal to Kasparov, and you can still be helpless as a baby on a soccer field! Because it takes, don't know the english word for it, feel with the ball, technique, you have to be able to pass with the inside, outside, heel and top of your foot, you have to be able to shift your bodyweight in hundreds of a second (this also for am.foot., but in soccer, you have to keep the ball with your feet, you can't just pick it up!), you have to be able to deke, to tackle without injuring the opponent, to pass high and long, or low and long, you have to be able to recieve that long and high ball and get it under control, you have to be able to read the play and not just being given a task for each ten seconds of play.

Quote:
Soccer players will get contact from another player and fall down screaming that he was fouled...carrying on like he broke a leg or something and get carried off the field only to return 2 minutes later doing fine. That's acting. That's not tough, that's being a rule-bending baby.

Who said anything about being tough? If we're discussing the toughest game, I don't doubt am.foot. would beat soccer easily. But that's not the issue. And another thing, "filming", as we call it, is one of the main problems of international football today, and if discovered, struck heavily down on (although not heavily enough, in my opinion). That has nothing to do with the sport soccer.

Quote:

Bottom line: I've played both Soccer and American Football...I can comment on both.
If you've never played American Football (and I mean full pads, full speed, organized football) then you're simply just voicing your biased opinions.

See, here you go again. I could say the same: If you've never played soccer (and I mean full tactics, zone defense, diamond shaped midfield, high pressure and posessive play), then you're simply just voicing your biased opinions.

And I doubt you have, since you claim that the only ones playing soccer in the U.S. are those who can't cut it in any other sport.

Quote:

I know that many nations see soccer as a national pride thing because many seem to take it far too serious...you get to beat your neighboring country and have bragging rights over them...that may be fun, but it doesn't excuse that the sport is boring. I think Soccer fans care more about the opportunity to beat their rival countries or enemies than they do about the sport.

My ears are filled to the brim with crap!!!! If we're more interested in what you say than the sport, why don't anyone care when Norway beat Sweden in Curling (a sport I enjoy watching, by the way, but I don't put down swedes on this board when I meet them saying "Hey, Peja didn't look so sharp last night, did he? Got something in his eye, huh?"). The rivalries are important because of the sport, not the other way around.

Quote:
Oh, and nice riots...I don't remember the last time someone died at an American Football or Basketball game...
It's ridiculous that fans will kill each other over a stupid sport.

right... shows how little we care about it... just because the only people who can afford tickets in USA are rich white people, you think that's an argument. In the US, you don't even care about the sport. You go to games, and it's like "yay, my team won" or "yay, my team didn't win, but look, there's Jack Nicholson!", and then you don't give a damn. In the rest of the world, people live, breathe, eat and drink soccer, for many people it's a substancial part of their lives. Must be because the sport is boring, right? Mind you, I'm not saying this is healthy, I'm just pointing out facts.

The fights that occur at soccer events has got nothing to do with the sport. Some hooligans are just out to fight, and soccer gives them a perfect chance, cause then they can pick a side, and if it loses, then they have to be avenged, and if it wins, they have to beat the fans in a similar way.

What if I say I don't remember the last time we had a school massacre in my country... it's ridiculous that pupils will kill eachother over school issues... must be because your schools are so boring, heh?

It's completely off-topic, so let's stick to the sports, OK?

Play well

hmmm

I think soccer is the premiere world sport... it's played in more countries fanatically than anything else. Only cricket, baseball, and wrestling(various forms not unified so nto sure it should qualify, greek wrestling alot dif from sumo etc)come close. Brasil is my favorite country for soccer...

To me american football resembles the way wars used to be fought- everyone lines up on one side and pummels on another till someone merges victorius. The way it's advirtised also goes along with this, the coaches are as generals, and the best players are the champions that can win the battle with heroic feats.

Soccer is more like modern warfare, cooperation between players is maximized, planning is flexiable and takes advantage of the slightest opportuniy, defense is ideally fluid and surges back to offense when the back(initiative) is controlled. It's much more fun to watch when you can feel the game rather than study the plays.

Of course american football is a tradition, so in that sense there is always something to enjoy, but eventually tradition fades. Look at arena football, the WFF attempt at football last year- you never see soccer being corrupted like that, it's already a beautiful game, nothing can improve it except better players.

You might want to be careful talking about school shootings; when I was in Germany as exchange student all the germans said the same things as you do now... but it's 7 years later and now they've had numerous shootings, not as many as US or Britain, but it's only a matter of time before it happens in your country.

Sport ist Mord - but I love it

Well, you might have guessed it, I like athletics best, especially running.

I also like to watch soccer, but not as much as I used to, since there are too many matches on TV these days... Friendly games in season preparation, UI Cup, Champions Leauge Qualification, UEFA Cup, Champions League Group Phase 1 & 2, National Cup, National League, 2nd Division etc. etc.
Therefore I focus on the main events.

Winter sports are cool also, especially Biathlon and Ski Jumping. And since the Tour de France takes place these days, I will also mention cycling (although I sometimes fall asleep when watching it, lol)

Wow, this whole thread happened when I was in my "don't have time for the internet" period but now I have plenty of time for the internet (yay summer!) so I'll go ahead and put in my $0.02.

Baseball : I resent this being referred to as the national pastime.  Godawful boring to watch and pretty boring to play unless you don't have enough players, you're playing in the street with a trash can lid and a sleeping dog representing the bases, you're using a tennis ball and you score about 40 runs an inning.

Basketball : I think the guys who play this at the professional level are the best atheletes in the world, bar none (well, at least the guards are, although some forwards, especially the "new" breed of European forwards are pretty freakin' athletic, too).  I love watching and playing (well, as long as the people I'm playing against are as hopelessly pathetic as I am...)

Cricket : Don't get it.  Seems to me the games take far longer than they should and I don't understand what this subtle difference between "bowling" and "throwing" is.  Look, I'll admit that baseball is bad, but I'm sorry, cricket is worse.

Football : I'm a yankee so the game I refer to is the one that uses the oblong ball.  My only experience playing is in the various neighborhood 4 on 4 or so games in which you have 1 qb, 3 wideouts and 3 corners and the guy who has to count to 10 before rushing the qb.  Those games are some of my best memories from childhood.  I really like watching it.  I'll admit that the plays are extraordinarily structured and that's part of the appeal of watching it since it really is a game of tactics and it's one of the few games that you can honestly say that team A won because they had a better game plan.  It's also not JUST a matter of doing what the coach tells you to  - what the coach asks you to do tends to be pretty hard, remember the coach is telling you to knock down 350 pounds of offensive tackle before chasing down a quarterback who used to be a track star before he manages to throw the ball.  Plus, if you've ever seen a guy like Brett Favre play, you know there's no WAY anybody told him to do that before the game...

Footie (to distinguish it from the true football) : Second best athletes in the world (behind pro basketballers).  I admit that I don't appreciate it as much as I probably should, but hey that's just personal taste.  I did take a liking to watching Brazil during the world cup, those guys were really fun to watch.

Hockey : Only sport I've ever seen live professionally (well, okay, I've seen "professional" soccer and baseball games, but minor league doesn't really count) and let me tell you, these games are FUN to watch.  I have never played, I can't even ice skate (well, maybe I can, I've never tried) but I'd imagine it would be a blast to play as well.

There.  My lengthy attempt to include all sports that matter.  Wow.  Can't believe I wrote so much.

Hmmm.  I guess I did leave tennis out which is especially surprising seeing as how that is the only sport I ever played semi-seriously, but I stand by my ranking of Basketball players first and Soccer players second.  I don't deny that tennis players are very good atheletes.  However, soccer players are out in the sun, too, and they are moving the ENTIRE time.  Tennis is characterized by bursts of strenuous lateral movement punctuated by fairly lengthy periods when the ball boys run out and then they bounce the ball ten times and then they serve but its a fault so they wait for the ball boy again and then serve again.  What I've seen of soccer seems to involve constant windsprints with leaping up to head the ball and so forth which if you can keep up for a quarter of a half you're in pretty good shape, much less an entire game.  Basketball has more play stoppages than soccer but less than tennis and requires all of the sudden starts and stops that tennis has, quite a bit of the full speed sprints that soccer, more jumping and leaping than either of the two as well as quite a bit of grappling and scrambling.  That's why I made the rankings like I did.
