MtG is simply a really old game with an outdated design MtG doesn't have the balls to fix because that would mean it's base with already thousands of dollars worth of cards would become super angry by their cards becoming obsolete due to a rule change.

Yet it is still one of the most popular. Like with every card game, if you get bored you can turn in to another one and get back to it as time passes. What's the point of changing something that works ok?

And all of this is why this thread is about MTG, not Spellweaver. It has a different design ethos from games like Spellweaver or Keyrune, and honestly... that's not a problem. Play each game for what it does well. Play MTG to play with a massive, massive pool of available resources, and all the complexity that comes with it. Play Spellweaver to have each card effectively add complexity. Play Keyrune to say that you don't want to play any stupid lands of any kinds, always want to play with a full hand, and have an incredibly unique experience, without any kind of deck building.

On a completely different subject, since this is an MTG thread, HOLY COW GUYS HAVE YOU SEEN THIS YEAR'S CORE SET?! The power level of this thing is stupid compared to the last 10 or so years. The 3-color legendaries other than the abzan elf are most certainly seeing standard, modern and commander play to some degree, and the cavaliers... M'BOI THOSE CAVALIERS ARE TASTY THO! I've been inspired to make a Modern Jund Dead Lands Matters deck, where discarding and sacking lands (and playing them again from the graveyard) for fun and profit is a thing, and the only reason I have red in there is for the red Cavalier, Tectonic Reformation (from Modern Horizons) and for my sideboard pieces of Leyline of Combustion and Lightning Bolt.

The red cavalier is just so good in this deck... especially in combination with the Gitrog monster and scapeshift. It's pretty trivial to get enough lands in the graveyard to make opponents not want to block him, ever, since he'll just deal more damage if he dies than if he hits them in the face. And I call that a win condition, my gentlenerds.

Yeah, some cards seem really strong. When talking individual strenght of cards, take Ajani, Strenght of the Pride for instance: +1 loyalty, gain life equal to the number of creatures and planeswalkers you control? Board clear for 0? Normally it takes a couple of turns to use a Planeswalker's ultimate, but in a token deck you get you can get it ready in like, 2 turns? Or Drakuseth? Or Vilis? Or Rotting Regisaur?

I would like to see them in Arena, but the game was down last time I checked...

That's another problem of physical cards versus a computer game. Once the physical cards are printed, there's no going back, where as the computer game creator can adjust cards at any moment with a simple patch

Man, Leyline of the Void is like... 100% amazing tech against all graveyard strats, and Leyline of Combustion shuts storm down. Hard. So those two leylines are amazing cards for Modern, at the very least.

I play MtG Arena casual so it's useless to me.

I prefer to get those shiny cool Rare or Mythic Rare legendary creatures that you can build a deck around. For instance I got Mythic Rakdos Showstoper, so I've built a B/R Demon, Devil & Imp deck around it

It is the only Mythic Rare I have gotten from this set... so far

Yeah Laylines are sideboard cards, I don't want them either yet. I am the same as blob, i play MTG casually. Either around the super exciting cards I get or I craft the ones that I really really have taken a liking to.

I created most of my custom decks this way. I either build a deck around a theme or Legendary I got from a pack (or decided to craft).

This way I've build a Symic Deck after getting Roalesk, a Wolf-themed deck after getting Tolsimir, multicolor Artifact deck after getting Ugin or Lazotep Army deck after getting some nice Amass cards (plus I crafted Bolas Planeswalker for this, so it ended up being a B/B/R deck) to name a few...

Those are not mega-competitive decks but they do their part.

Not sure if anyone has seen much by the Spice 8 Rack, but I can happily recommend his channel here. And here, have his most recent video! Warning... very meme-charged, sometimes crude and other times lewd language within.

Have this link here

I've read somewhere that War of the Spark novel isn't exactly a good reference as the author only had handful of materials when he started to write. It's a common problem when things are worked on at the same time...

That said I dislike watching videos like the one above. Sometimes I prefer to stay in the dark instead of being aware how many plot holes were made in the process.

I mean, if that's not your cup of tea, he's also got a video that's 33 minutes of godless goblins in MTG history. And it's actually fantastic. Like, it's informative, humorous, and I feel so bad for Slobad. That poor goblin just wanted to be a good person, fix his plane and save his people. His fate is one of the most terrible things to happen to a genuinely heroic goblin dude... and Squee exists, so take that as a comparison!

Goblins aren't my cup of tea either. Nah there is enough lore to go by.

As a general idea I like War of the Spark and it's conclusion.

I'm most fond of the "Art of MtG" artbooks by Viz Media. The propotions of info and MtG art are perfect. They give you the general feel of a plane plus some plot teasers which you can look into if you want more. A shame they don't seem to be working on more entries. I wrote an email to them and they only said there are no plans atm, although my interest might help them decide on more entries.

I'm beginning to think New Phyrexia will be the theme of the newest story arc/block. MtG multiverse needs a new big enemy, we're getting cards like Yawgmoth, and there are rumors that Archery has something to do with "metal".

The question is, will Mirrodin/Phyrexia still be as dark and cool as I remember? We will probably find out soon enough at San Diego Comic con...

I personally hope that they won't have a big multiverse-enemy for a few sets (think 2-3). Just because I think a rest after Nicol Bolas would give everyone a chance to cleanse their palates and get ready for the next multi-set big bad. I also think that Theros, Lorwyn/ Shadowmoor and Kaldheim are getting more and more likely for various reasons.

Theros is the plane of devotion, and we've gotten a lot of mono-colored creatures with multiple mana symbols in their casting cost (which gives you a bunch of devotion fodder card already. Look at the Cavalier cycle for a prime example)

Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are a plane that Wizards knows players want to return to, literally being the highest voted plane in a pole they ran a year ago by ~50 votes iirc. It's also one of the most unique planes in the line up, and is a perfect setting to do something that doesn't relate to the magic story in general. A good palate cleanser, as it were. Also a major home for split-mana cards, which I would love to see more of.

And Kaldheim is more possible because of those snow permanents in Modern Horizons. A plane who's name literally translates to, "Cold Home" and which has a bunch of snow themes would be perfect for that style of deck, which Wizards has told us will be a more supported deck archetype sometime in the near future. (I want to flip my Marit Lage more consistently, dangit. ) Being nordic, it could also be the perfect plane for a Phyrexian invasion arc kick-off point, already being super heavy metal having prophecies of "ragnarock" (which could just be the next Phyrexian invasion).

I think the best point of reference is the Rabiah Scale (for those who don't know, it's a the MtG teams scale that "measures" how an MtG setting/plane is likely to be brought back). And Lorwyn/Shadowmoor wasn't very high on it :/ Personally I'm not fond of the plane: the setting is nice, but I don't like the "A Midsummer Night's Dream" stylization.

Theros is pretty likely. It was rumored before, it's high on the scale, and they definitely want to bring back Elspeth one way or another

They might take the votings into account, but remember it takes time to design a set, so if they plan to bring back L/S in light of the votings for instance, then it will take time...

For those interested, here's the link to the Scale: https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/making-magic/rabiah-scale-part-1-2018-11-12

EDIT: Ah ok, we at least know the name, it's Throne of Eldraine and it points to more classical fantasy, with elves and fairies and stuff. Maybe it really will be Lorwyn/Shadowmoor? If not, why would they make another plane like this though?

Hmmm... it could be a return to Lorwyn/ Shadowmoor, but I'm pretty sure, given their recent naming conventions, that Eldraine is actually the name of the plane. The last few sets have had "X Y of plane Z," so the "Throne of" would by X Y, and "Eldraine" slots right into Z.

Now it could be a kingdom within Lorwyn/ Shadowmoor, and could be a faction of faries and elves within the plane, but I'm expecting that it's going to be its own place based off of the D&D feawild. And I will be disappointed that it's not on the fantasy faewild plane that they already had.

Ok so Throne of Eldraine is, quote, "Camelot meets Grimmís fairy tales". Sounds cool as it has Innistrads dark vibe and Arthurian Legends which is neat in itself. So kinda like Innistrad meets Shadowmoor meets Dominaria.

It looks like your typical "we wanted to do this since forever" type of setting, and it's interesting to see they decided to create another plane as everything pointed for a return to some older plane.

But they are introducing a lot of new stuff like special Boosters (the so-called Theme and Collector boosters) and special type of frame for cards.

Oh and Will and Rowan Kenrith Planeswalkers come from this plane.

Looking forward to this!
