Sounds really good. I just read a handful of negative reviews on Steam that say the game is too much AOW 3 in space though unfinished and repetitive. However the biggest concern is how someone said you'd have to accept being data mined to 3rd parties in the EULA, otherwise you won't be able to play the game. If any of that is true, I'm not gonna consider it no matter how good it is. Can anyone confirm anything?

Why is that a bad thing? Isn't AoW 3 a game that many of us here fell in love with, especially when HoMM was at its worse? Planetfall is far from being unfinished. Or let me say it like that: I wish other games were as "unfinished" like this one. Besides, they never did deny it's AoW 3 in Space

First I've heard of it. But I see a lot of negativity concerning Planetfall just becasue they belong to Paradox now. A lot of troll posts one might say.

Be as it may, there is an online profile which can be active, but you don't need to be online to play the game. I also can't remeber agreeing to some policies while installing the game, maybe when you install it via Paradox app (I play on Steam for that matter)? Besides, AoW 3 also had an online profile back when it still fully belonged to Triumph, so if you ask me, they very well could've had such policies back in the day... my point is, online profile is nothing new for the game, Paradox or not. On a side note, does RODO even allow such things?

The thing that concerns me is that from what I know the game does not have good sales. Such a gem of a game, it would be a waste if sales dragged it down...

Interesting. Don't think that's the smashing success they might have prayed for. Still on the fence about buying it myself, though that's more about having many other options and lacking time.

I hope it won't project on the quality of the expansion packs. Well, assuming those won't be simply stuff "cut out from the final game", har har...

Was out from home for a few days so didn't have chance to play it some more, will get back to it asap :]

Paradox' "Season Pass" policy os assuring 3 dlcs, because they sell them already at release. The game is pretty expensive with 50 bucks for the simplest version, and I expect many to wait for the first sale with the added advantage that a lot of bugs will be ironed out until then.

Yeah, and people are relucant to buy stategy games from "no-name" developers. Especially when they know about Steam sales.

No wonder developers add lootboxes to their games. This is were real money is made...

That said, maybe the game will earn its keep in the long run.

EDIT: I wasn't this enthusiastic about a TBS game in a long time. Each turn offers something new: quests to complete, alliances to manage (there's this whole NPC demand/deed system which gives you quests which completion raises your affiliation with the faction and, in return, gives you access to more of their tech/merch/units). You can make loadouts for your armies on the go. And nothing is cumbersome: you create a new loadout, and there is a one-click option to equip all units of the same type with the new template if resources suffice, wherever they are on the map. Each Military technology adds new ways to further customize your army. The economy is simple and effective: each resource is used for something else, for instance there is a "diplomacy" currency which is used to buy units from NPC factions/make diplomatic actions or "strategic" resource which is used to cast "spells" on the map. Finally there's an in-game encyclopedia which describes every term/mechanic you might bump into.

Campaign offers a lot of variety: objectives can change drastically, and you can pick one of a few paths at a time. It's hard to tell how much this choices will affect the campaign itself, but I can say from a plot standpoint these are as far from each other as it can get: from helping a faction which you had bad relations with previously (second chance?) and choosing an "investigation" approach, to a full-on "purification" of a planet. And there are always a few options of how you can get there. It's quite immersive and makes you feel that your choices matter.

The best part of this game is that you have this feeling you can play it however you like, there's no "right" choice (I'm not that good when it comes to balance, but I can tell there are no obvious choices). You choose with whom you want to get along or plain destroy. With each thing you have at least two choices to make: found a stash with an item? Don't want it? Scrap it for materials. Want to help another NPC faction? It will give you stuff but will worsen relations with another NPC faction etc.

I might sound overly-optimistic, but this game is exactly what I've being looking for, and I hope it will keep surprising me at very corner like it does atm.

The colony management UI is. They upped that game part, but failed to create the respective UI. Too many clicks necessary by far and you waste a lot of time with changing to and from, because the info is so dispersed. And units become confusing, the more different variants you have from one and the same (the other side of the coin is of course that the modded units are useful, even in different versions).

That's not strictly true. There is less space for everyone compared with the predecessor (which of course has its good sides), but that means you have to be fast, fast, fast in claiming sectors and found new colonies - if you don't you are out of space before you can look left and right, at least when you up the difficulty. Of course THAT means, you can't turtle (you can in a certain way, and you may even survive with your small empire, but you'll never win that way), which may be considered a good thing as well.
And because of that you need to do something for your food income fast, although it may seem as if you'd need research and energy just as much.
Still, the game is great and will become a lot greater, I'm inclined to say. It's sufficiently different from AoW 3, without being a totally different game, and there are lots of great ideas.

What do you mean, can you explain? I think colony managment UI is pretty neat. Each tab manages a different aspect of the colony, and it's straightforward. You have an overview of what you can do at any given time, for instance which sectors can be upgraded. Or maybe I'm missing your point here?

Ah, I didn't mean the general approach in the game. I think they wanted to make the game faster, more expansion oriented. But what I meant is how customizable it is, for instance how different your army composition might be or the choices you can make when building alliances.

Btw I've met a pretty big hurdle already in the second map of the Vanguard campaign. I thought I will play thorugh it lightly, but one of the enemy factions launched a pretty strong offensive, and I'm having trouble defending against them. Gonna have to try different strategies

Tried it, uninstalled it. It's unplayable as it is now. The UI is just awful.

- It's hard to make out anything.
- It's hard to find anything.
- It's hard to execute anything.

AoW 3 UI was unintuitive but still somewhat playable, this is just horrible. It's slow, it's clunky, it's unresponsive. I don't want to wait five seconds to find out if my command for a spelltactical operation went through or not. It locks you out of the rest of the game when certain popups appear, and it doesn't center your view on them. So not only do you have no idea where they are on the map, they're also not centered on your screen so you have to look for the box too! I need a snowing popup blocker just to play!

There's no variety between races. There's metallic humans, creepy humans, female humans, american humans, bugs and dwarves. Neutral critters are more interesting than them. So there's nothing really pulling me in to fight this awful UI, there's no reason to, it's not worth it. Leave it and come back in a year, maybe two when they have added expansions and fixed it.

Well, you don't have an overview because every tab manages a different aspect. There is no way to select a colony, except to click or even double-click on it (you cannot access them from the colony list tab). Then you are automatically in the unit building tab, but before I decide anything I need to check the colony buildings and sector buildings tabs, and if I have decided on something I may want to have a look whether I should reassign production worker, especially when it's something important where every turn earlier might count or when I need the workers for something else.

@JoonasTo

Sorry to hear you're disappointed with the game, I belive if you're not liking it at this point chances are you're not gonna like it later on there is only so much they can change at this point aesthetically. If factions are such a problem to you maybe you should've researched the game more before buying it? All of them had overview trailers. What I mean is, they were pretty transparent when it comes to content. Imo the "races" are ok, most of them are humans as the Star Union was mostly human with different factions like soldiers, noble caste or tech-guys etc. and those evolved in some way because of their circumstances.

I do need to agree with you regarding the pop-ups though. There is some work to be done. There are some hick-ups when opening/closing them. At times the camera looses focus (in battle when loading a save). But we're talking Triumph, so I belive they will fix many of those issues.

@JollyJoker

I have different expierience, for me the tabs are fine, I never use overviews either way. The UI can always be better, they could've used Endless Legend UI as an inspiration when it comes to worker managment. Oh, and you can select a colony by right-clicking it in Colony Overview (it isn't intutive though), and there are keybindigs (;/' by default)

PS: Suprisingly I started to notice more issues after the Velicioraptor patch. For instance there is an issue with game saves, something to do with their dates, those are not ordered correctly.

None of the issues are game changers though, rather annoyances...

AoW 3 was one of the many games that taught me to wait before I buy. I pre-ordered it, played it a lot until I finally decided I've had enough and moved on... and then the patches started rolling out. Balances, abilities, unique twists on units depending on their race. Don't get me wrong, I LOVED that they were invested in the game enough to keep improving it like that, I just felt liked I missed a bit. Ended up coming back to the game after the 2 expansions came out. So this time, I'll just wait for the full and completed game before I start. (Which has become my approach to all games)
