Angelic Alliance Army

If you would have Angelic Alliance set (no morale penalty while combining units from Castle, Rampart, Tower, Fortress and Stronghold), what would be your preferred hero and army (stick to those five cities or add your HotA version with Conflux and Cove as well)?

I would choose Crag Hack (with skills like Offense, Armorer, Logistics, Tactics, Wisdom, Earth and Air Magic and probably Ballistics).

Units:
1. Centaur Captains
2. Obsidian Gargoyles (growth 13/week,flying, sadly cannot be resurrected)
3. Royal Griffins (10/week,flying,retaliations)
4. Crusaders
5. Mighty Gorgons
6. Naga Queens
7. Archangels

Your list looks pretty good.
All your units are melee units though and I would probably switch Gargoyles with Storm Elementals and perhaps Crusaders with Ayssids. (Fast and offensive flyer in HotA.) If I want more range power replace Archangels with Titans. (Titans are even better in HotA.)

I tried to avoid shooters deliberately to get most of that offense skill. Otherwise I would surely add at least Gelf (I mean Grand Elf of course, not Red Dwarf GELF).

Oh right you chose Crag Hack.
I pick Gunnar because he is so damn fast and has two great starting skills.

He is a little bit too "dungeony". But I get your point. Against Crag with expert Logistics, Gunnar (/Dessa, Kyrre) with the same expert skill has more or less one additional day per week. On a big map I would probably rather grab one of those as well. But it depends...

more speed and damage

1. Centaur Captains
2. Wolf Raiders
3. Dragon Flies
4. Ayssids / Silver Pegasi
5. Master Genies
6. War Unicorns
7. Ancient Behemoths

2. Raiders are great damagewise, but they have low HP. Also with sculptors wings you get 13 gargoyles as compared to 9 Wolf Raiders. And wolves do not fly.

Btw with Conflux allowed in the Angelic Alliance morale thingy (HotA), I would probably switch Archangel for Phoenix.

that is the point. with Crag Hack you don't need Hit Points, you need Damage, and Wolf Raider will deal 3x the amount of damage a Garg will do. those are only good as fodder or blocking shooters

I dont think that its "three times the damage". I just did the numbers. Two times and that is if the enemy unit does not retaliate. Its nine 3-4 dmg Raiders with Attack 8 against thirteen 2-3 damage Attack 7 Obs. Gargoyles. I see similar numbers for the first attack (proximately 28.5-37.5 for the raiders against 26-39 for the gargoyles).

opp will not be retaliating since you are striking first

Mate if you kill that oponent with your first strike (and might I remind you, that gargoyles are actually faster), then you dont really need that second raider attack, do you?

Moreover the longer the battle/campaign, the more the higher defense and HP of Obs. Gargoyles starts to kick in. And there its defense 7 to 5 and 16hp to 10. Id say that makes the difference.

Btw in a battle between two 100 unit stack (ie I even gave the advantage to the raiders, because normally there would be more of the gargoyles) you win with the gargoles with around 28 of them or so left.

this is not a ping pong. this is Crag Hack smashing opp before he gets his ass handed to him

if you have Tazar, then cows and other slow units with more HP is more suitable

Lets leave it there mate. I dont think, that more discussion on that topic between us is needed. I laid out my reasons clearly.

Besides only three ppl so far wrote their preferrences here. So lets not make it into a discussion just between two ppl.

it's always gonna be Offense specialist vs Armorer specialist, since those two types of heroes are battle dominating. Crag Hack must be the one striking first to have the upper hand, unless there is no shooters on the field as an exception. if Crag Hack is facing Orrin this is even more so crucial. the most speed and damage will give Hack the win. slow units like cows who cannot reach opp in 1 turn will waste away

discussing is just discussing. i don't see the harm in it. you should give examples yourself on what heroes you want to see preferable line-ups

Nah, I should not. Leave that to me. Im perfectly happy with the list as it is now. Three flyers seems enough as well. Moreover these three can handle themselves behind the castle wall, until ballistics kicks in.

I will leave you to your dreams of three times the damage and other stuff.

why are you getting agitated. now that you mention castle walls, surely Archangels are a better choice. otherwise, Behemoths with Hack will be dealing 2x times more damage than Archies

you should have an open mind when discussing Heroes 3. otherwise how are you going to improve?

Nah, not getting agitated. I just dont think, that this discussion can provide me anything more. Especially when you come up with nonsense (like that raider 3x the damage, or that Crag Hack attack with no enemy retaliation). Btw saying, that others will learn from you through discussion... That seems a little bit arrogant.

One can willingly participate in a discussion as well as get out of it. So just please leave it alone already. You already wrote your list and opinion.

Again mate, I already made the point (in the first reaction), that you get more gargoyles weekly than raiders. Also see above my own damage counting. I stand by it. Its two times more for the raiders, if the enemy does not retaliate.

I also made the point, why I want a flying unit there. Focusing only on the damage (which again is two times higher as I said originally) does not do the trick for me.

What you said still mostly play for those gargoyles. They are certainly much sturdier with their higher defense and HPs.

You are right of course in your points though. Also the cost of unit plays a role.

My argument is, that its never one Archangel against one Phoenix (even though you have to build a special building in HotA to get the second one). So the same basic logic applies here.

I take issue though, if someone is constantly repeating to me the same point (damage, damage, damage...) without considering my point of view and reason. Even if you get Crag, its never only about damage. You still need a way, how to get behind castle walls (etc.). And you also need a way how to survive there (until ballistics, that I chose there, kicks in and "opens" the gate).

All in all I think, that Im still generous in accepting the 2x the damage. It is much closer to the reality than 3x the damage (where everything plays into the hands of the raiders).

x2.95 damage when comparing 90 Gargs with 90 Wolfs

x2.05 damage when comparing 130 Gargs with 90 Wolfs

do you want the calculations or let's give it a rest?

i think OhforfSake explained it well
