Am I the only one that sees that pic has higher resolution elements than the actual game?

Probably the HD version released by UbiSoft.

But did it include bigger map assets? I was unaware of that

Because Ubisoft made bigger assets.

Why did everyone hate it, then?

What were its defects? I always hear "stay away from the horrible HD version" and no mods are made for it...

Only Restoration of Erathia (base game). No Shadow of Death or Armageddon's Blade expansions.

So no Conflux, no RMG, no new creatures that were added in the expansions, and no other campaigns that Shadow of Death and Armageddon's Blade added, also no new artifacts (like combination ones, which were added in Shadow of Death).

Yeah it was kinda dumb of them to release just the base game, when they knew that the source code for both Shadow of Death and Armageddon's Blade was lost. They should have just left well enough alone, but all they wanted was a quick cash grab. Typical Ubi.

So the backlash they got was rather well deserved imo.

Oh I see. That *IS* dumb. Low effort, they could have just contacted ex NWC employees to see if they had the source codes.

In any case I think the higher res assets could be adapted into mods.

As far as I know, the complete source code was found later by an ex employer. He offered it to them, but whatever Ubisoft did with it, they didn’t release a new HD version with the expansions included.

^^^

Yeah, the source code was found, but I think Ubi was too focused on Heroes 7 to actually do anything with 3 again.

After 3HD flopped Ubi tried to make 7 the be all end all, but yet again, Ubi releases another poorly designed game in an effort to milk a franchise that has a very dedicated fanbase. Effectively killing any interest anyone would have in a Heroes game made by Ubi.

If Ubi releases 3HD Complete, I will buy it 100%. But as it stands right now, the disc version, plus HotA and HD Mod is more than enough.

1. Lacks to expansions, they pretend like they lost the code so they can't make them.

2. The new graphics aren't necessarily better and it takes away from the visual charm of the original game.

3. No mods work with it.

4. It's not DRM-free so if they decide for whatever reason to stop selling the game or cancel all purchases, they can take away your game. That's also a thing with Steam games - codes for games can and have been revoked before, still are.

Regarding point 4. .. it's better to buy the game on GOG and know you will keep it forever also all mods, especially HD and HoTA work on it.

Well now that there is source code I would hope for an actually good remaster someday.

Though it would also be nice for the community to get this source code

Same for H4... mods are very difficult to make due to lack of source codes and mostly everything is hardcoded.
