But now I played Illusion world 2 (h3map). Ok my Beastmasters has 16 attack and 27 defense to beat 250 Mighty Gorgons without casting Slow in 4 months also without Diplomacy and Statue of Legion. Beastmaster lost 2 Ghost Dragons and 2 Wyvern Monarches I think you learn still Homm. I don't mean First Aid, etc but basic Homm.

And thread no discuss primary skills. So I explain that I recommend you take only defense, if you're Fortress team otherwise Stronghold takes only attack. Why? Fortress has Mighty Gorgon, Greater Basilisk, etc their abilities care finally.

Huge attack works best if you hit first, which is what you always do in creeping. Which is basically the whole game before the last fight. Unless you're doing some really rare FAtent strats. Which no one does, like ever. When was the last time you went tentcreeping? 99% of the time you are guaranteed the first hit. Only when you go into the final fight do they become more or less equal.

We can assume barb gets earth one round later so 10th level for expert and beastmaster 6th level. Then barbarian is better between levels 1-5, beastmaster 6-9 and barbarian all the way from 10 upwards before the final fight. True, those levels 6-9 might be crucial for taking a key point on the map. This is all assuming you got tactics on levels 1,2,3. Otherwise the barbarian with his probably air magic is better. So from that perspective, barbarian still seems like a better choice, unless you know the map has something you need expert slow for during levels 6-9.

Don't see how unit selection of the castles comes into play here, it's not like you have to only play barb or beast with stronghold/fortress.

It's only a major difference if you're never hit back. And that either takes AI abuse, or enough firepower to just "do it raw". I don't think there's a lot of cases where having 10 or 15% more damage would lead to no lossess except for when you're doing heavy ranged creeping and you need to kill your enemies before they reach your lines (due to lack of slow, most likely).

IF you're hit back, however, defense is just as good as attack. For example, Dragon Utopia without Rez without some very specific AI abuse patterns.

Barbarian isn't half bad regarding Earth, since he still has 37.5% chance of learning it at level 4, which is decent. But beastmaster's 50% is obviously better. And having earlier/more reliable access to mass slow is worth it in my book, unless i restart till I get earth, haha. i do it sometimes vs. AI on some stupid fanmaps, I have to admit, that's because having earth vs. not heaving earth is like playing two different games...

But you heavily need mass slow to fully benefit from griff banks or golem banks.. that is such a stupid power boost that the sooner, the better. Totally worth getting ASAP. You get tier 7 units for free which starts the snowball.

Yeah but there's only a 1/18 (1/20 in HotA, soon to become 1/22) chance that the next hero in the tavern (after you hire a hero) is a Barbarian. So getting a Barb speficially without some singleplayer savescumming or RNGesus blessings might be tricky if you're NOT playing stronghold.

Part of why I like to play fortress is because I'm 100% guaranteed to get a Beastmaster. And the best one of them, too.

If you're not doing heavy AI abuse you're playing the game wrong. You should never get hit while creeping. The ones to take the hits will be your single stack fodder. This directly leads to you being able to take on 10-15% stronger stacks. And because stronger enemies split more, it's a snowball effect.

Also defense isn't as good as attack if you have to take a hit if you can't kill the stack you're hitting. That's because units aren't infinitely divisible. 2 dragons with 5 HP left hit twice as hard as one dragon with full HP.

So defense is only better when you need to take multiple hits or take a hit first. And that only happens in very few exceptional cases before the final fight.

So like I said, unless the map specifically has something in an area where you hit with a hero between levels 6-9 and need slow. A barbarian is just a faster hero to creep with. And that's if you consider the difference in chances for earth magic to be one round later.

There's also a case to be made for a ballista barbarian, as niche as it is, compared to beastmaster ballista/first aid tent, which are basically unplayed strats.

PS. Someone should totally make beastmaster wight opening a thing.

A good Gerwulf and his ballista. Ok no question who is the winner. This thread is meaning to discuss issue/matter. We jumped a bit to the side like Beastmaster beat 250 Mighty Gorgons without hit & run. Why? Consider from the outside. But we talked already about defense.

I said we can't put the rank to heroes. So Barbarian and Beastmaster are still good.

This is an interesting question. Despite playing the game for quite a while, I don't think I've seen notable differences between some classes.  Of course, there are a couple of obvious ones. But which is the best? I can't tell.
