The AI is better in the new patch!!
I posted this in the patch thread, but thought that for those who are angry with the game, this should be more easy to see.  CelestialHeavens.com put up a message that a 3DO spokesperson mentioned that they left some of the patched stuff out of the readme: first, the AI now can deal with neutral stacks more effectively (big plus for those of us tired of seeing dead enemies everywhere); and second, the AI no longer stalls in front of his own castle (probably a big plus as well - wasted time in this game spells doom...).

AND he mentioned that they are still working out other AI issues, so this isn't the end of AI patching!  Woohoo!

Now, how much better is the AI?  I want some test info cuz I won't be able to play much for a few days...

ai
Playing the patched version last night on highest difficulty I noticed that the ai heroes on the xl map were definitely stronger when i got around to slaughtering them with my uber-thief.

well, it's dissapointing that you still slaughtered the AI, but at least its an improvement.  I imagine that as they continue to update it, we'll be able to see a fair challenge

clarification
Wanted to clarify that the XL (Zanfa's Challenge) map is broken for thieves.  Just set difficulty to champion level, run the thief around in the home turf eating all chests and trying to get to master or gm stealth during the first month, then go to the middle island and run around all in there getting to level 25+ by the end of month 2, going on a rampage v. the computer players in month 3 (with a bunch of potions), and beating the map in the first week of month 4.  Gets you a mantis or better rating.  This is going to be a big problem on random xl maps at high difficulty.  Only thieves have such fast increase potential on such maps.  It will take the other hero types much longer to get powerful.  So I do believe that the AI is much better in the patch, just that the map is broken in favor of thieves.

Ahhhhh... haven't done much playing with the single scenarios so I didn't know thieves were like that.  Good to know

heck, I don't know whether this is due to the patch or not but I encountered sumthing rather surprising about the ai in the last scenario of the Elwin & Shaera campaign. Afte the patch was applied, the enemy used the one-way portals much more often then I've noticed on other campaign scenarios that I've played. I had to create 2 stacks of 10 fairie dragons each to patrol my lands and hunt them down.

One particular incident involves sending a small stack of white tigers to "investigate" one of my towns. Immediately afterwards a decent army appeared from the nearby portal and proceeded to lay siege to my town! I was of course unprepared so I decided to reload and send out a little army of my own to squash the tiger scouts b4 it had the chance to get close to my town and inspect it. The siege didn't eventuate.

I hope that the "new" AI is not too out of reach in Heroes 4.

OK, I have to tell you this, but I haven't purchased Heroes 4 yet. But looking at the new and harder AI in the patch that you were talking about, I was afraid that this will put some players out of reach in the game (in other words, unable to win even on the easiest difficulty).

In Heroes 3 I could not win normal sized maps beyond normal difficulty. As a non-tactician (one who uses outright numbers and brute strength to win) am I going to have a very difficult time in playing Heroes 4?

You can always read strategies for Heroes 4 in this forum. And if that doesn't help, there is always map editor and cheat codes. We want more intelligent AI.

I agree, I want the AI to perform as well as an intermediate human at normal or advanced difficulty.  However, Damacon_Ace, not to worry.  As of now, the AI is pretty weak still.  Without the patch, Champion difficulty (akin to Impossible in H3) is beatable by 50% or more of the players out there.  With the patch, it may be closer to 25%, though I haven't seen enough messages yet to really guage.

HappyPike, YES!!!  The AI is definitely better.  I still see PLENTY of stupid things (armies carrying a dead hero into my territory instead of back to their castle, for example), but in the order campaign, map 1, I've actually had to face 3 level 12 heroes!  Last time I played I never saw a hero over level 9 on that map.  I'd say the two minor AI changes have made the game much more playable.  They actually had good-sized armies, and when they saw my hero they all ran into the castle instead of just standing around... it was quite refreshing.

Champion difficulty is waaaay too easy for thieves...
Lol, I got this game like a week ago, and I only played two campaigns on intermediate difficulty. Now I try zanfas revenge as a thieve and it's deadly easy... AI opponents can'twon't even capture their mines and I capture them and have neutral guards , and WAY more creatures, the trasury gives me enough money and more to buy every creature in all my towns. There is no way you can lose IMO, as the neutral stacks guard you from ai attacks exept for assault from the sea, but you will have all your troops to defend as your lonely thief is getting all the artifacts experience, mines, neutral towns, etc. Just get grand master scouting and combat skills and your hero becomes a one man army with potions too . IMO, potions are VERY usefull in campaigns and when using the stealthcombat combo.

Yeah me2, but if the uk patch dosen't work with the norwegian version(english language, think it's the same, but not sure), I'll be so pissed at 3do I dunno what I'd do ...

Oh, at least untill now, it seems the impossible difficulty in HoMM3 was much harder than champion in HoMM4... The stacks are too big for even the ai too handle without too big losses.

Also, I dislike the way they took out the known heroes descriptions like impossible, lots, horde, etc... They prolly did it to make the game sound more different from it's predessors, but IMO it just takes away a good share of the HoMM magic...
