it depends

My favorites so far:

Small map:
1) Life (Shooters) 2) Might (Cyclops).

Medium open map:
1) Life (Shooters) 2) Order (Shooters/Casters)

Medium closed map:
Order (Djinn, 6 per week, gives enough time to get a nice stack of em and enough time to get berserk/forgetfulness/teleport on a mage, also enough time to see the benefit of a lord).

Large open map:
1. Chaos (Enough time to develop a thief and capitalize on it before the end of the game + black dragons) 2. Order

Large closed map:
1. Order  (Djinn and high level order magic) 2. Nature (thief + summoning + creature portal).

XL open map:
1. Death 2. Nature/Chaos (Any town that can hire a thief early will rule this size, especially at higher difficulty)

XL closed map:
1. Death (thief + necro), 2. Nature (thief + creature portal + summoning + fairy dragons + speed)

I will admit that I have a soft spot for Nature too(the spells are rather mediocre, though) - but ASYLUM AND CHAOS MAGIC ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!! SO WHAT if their spells are all damage?! THAT'S GOOD!! Personally, I think that their spells should be completely damage and nothing else...well, maybe a few curses or blessings, but apart from that -

DIRECT DAMAGE ALL THE WAY! ChAOs aND iT'S CreATUREs RULE!! BLACK DRAGONS DOMINATE!!! MWAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

So far I have always avoided hiring thieves. I mostly play against the computer so that makes stealth useless right? Is there any other advantage?

stealth

Stealth may be the most powerful skill in homm4, v. the computer or otherwise, especially at high difficulty.  Nothing better than flagging other players' mines before they can even beat the guards.  Try any large or xl map at champion difficulty, start with a thief and get experience from all the loose chests and structures.  Even if some are  guarded...just retreat if you have to.  Then once you get to a certain stealth level, run past every creature that is vulnerable to that stealth level.  You will end up finishing the map faster than you can by starting any other kind of hero including necromancers and order magi.  Nature can hire a thief and I an beginning to think nature with a thief as the first main hero may be the most powerful combo.

Life does not suck.. Now that the Resurrection spell is gone, the only way for it to be cast in battle is with Angels. Life magic is also the only way to learn the Resurrection secondary skill. My Nature heroes always learn Life magic so I can resurrect my troops and keep their numbers from dropping too low, since their HP is not that high.

Overall, I like the feel of Nature the most. My vote went with Nature.

Death is probably the easiest to play, with the abusive Necromancy skill.

I would say ORDER!!!

The genies are GENIUS!!! 1 or 2 heroes & l00 genies will win any battle (almost). If the opp. creatures get too strong... use Create Illusion. In no time u'll have twice the number of that creature

I have tried out the Order Campaign(and now Lupin's going to call me a traitor - oh well...) and I do see that Order Magic is strong(I myself have done that thing with the Genies, and in a few turns I had more of the enemy creature total!) But, I still hold that CHAOS RULES!!

Why Chaos is strong!

First of all is the Thief class quite powerfull on large maps. With a thief class you are capable of flagging valuable mines before your opponent is strong enough to defeat the guards.

Furthermore do i have a preference for spells which hurt my enemy....and chaos magic does hurt your enemy.

Also medusa's stoning is great! Almost comparable with genies and ofcourse Black Dragons rule, especially on a large map when you have the time to build them into a nice stack.

A thief, maxed out, with medusa's and doznes of black dragon is a major pain in the ass for all opponents.
