That's why there wouldn't have been a brexit without the EU enlargement of 2004 and 07. You know, the other stuff is, like, more abstract. People are always complaining about aspects of the situation there are in - which is logical. Things are never perfect and there is always something to complain about - but that's no compelling reasons to change anything. I mean, many complain about their cars, for example. This not good, that could be better ... but actually selling it and going for a new one takes more than a couple of complaints, especially more than abstract complaints.
So here are the estimated (except for 2001 and 2011 when there was a census) figures of Poles in the UK:

Note that the EU enlargement that included Poland was 2004. So let's estimate the number of Poles in the UK at the point of "opening" to 80.000. Merely four years later you have 500.000. From 2014 to 2018, Poles were the largest group of foreign-born residents in the UP, larger than Indians or Pakistani.
So a complaint like, "gee, nowadays you see more Polacks around than Indians or Pakis" - was actually true
The BNP campaigned for banning of specifically POLISH (not Eastern-European or "Not-British") migrant workers.
Anyway, that's what tipped the scales, I think. Because it wasn't abstract, but a proven fact. Britain is used to "immigration problems" due to their colonial past, and Indians, Pakistani, Jamaicans and so on are a fixed part of the equation that isn't changable. But a flood of immigrants from Poland surpassing all that?
