isolating different pixels between images?

i have an old version of photoshop, so i can't use the "difference" selection to isolate different pixels from one image to the next. what i want to know is(and i've searched already, but i'm coming up zilch), is if anyone knows of a program or feature somewhere that is FREE, to do what i need?

specifically, isolating ONLY the changes from one image to the next, so that i can use the isolated changes elsewhere.

the reason i ask is, i want to add many more varying animations to the game.

You should try GIMP. Haven't tested the method myself, but after a quick search I've found this:

Baronus

You can search something like 'compare pictures' and 'find differences'
Eg.

compare
12 best

May be better. It needs searching.
