I have a YT channel and I can't modify anything about how random people interact with thumb down/up. I can delete comments and mask the whole like/dislike feature, which will penalize both so...

Well, all is possible if you pay money, even get elected president. That doesn't mean a majority of people are able to do that, only a very tiny fraction.

So, question:

Why are dislikes important (to see)?

I mean, I NEVER decide anything on the number of dislikes something has. I'm simply not interested in the number of dislikes. Interesting is the number of views. The more controversial something is, the more dislikes thre will be, naturally. The number of dislikes and the ratio of likes and dislikes don't say anything about the validity of an expressed opinion or stated facts and so on.
The dislike button is just an invitation for interest groups to collectively diss controversial stuff.

Try to understand the presidential election in Finland, for example.

Official Like, neutral/reject and dislike. Do you know heroesportal uses +2, +1, 0, -1 and -2.

Depends on thing.

If only like means communism always has a choice for one, such as a product or a party. You buy like them.

you're talking about a feature on a website. can the mods get rid of qp's here? they sure can. you think they can't reset counters? they sure did. i watched them do it live, myself.

why do you think they just removed the feature? it's infinitely easier to pretend you're unbiased, when people aren't able to WATCH you alter the info in real time.

so you can remove your own qp's here? or does someone have to do that for you? come on, dude.

you already know that they're manipulating information with this move they made. youtube is owned by google; and google manipulates the information you can receive on THEIR website, too.

Manipulating the information is one thing, manipulating the reaction is another. I believe YT staff manipulates information (they are biased like anyone) but I  don't believe they were able to manipulate the reactions (without that becoming a visible cheat), hence the removal of like/dislike.

apparently, it's a targetted effect. certain regions/videos, and spreading from there. i would have thought they would just change a main site feature, but it doesn't look like it.

Oh yeah, the like/ dislike fluctuation thing. Know what's responsible for that one? It's something we on HC should be intimately familiar with. It's our favorite. It's bots.

Likes/ Dislikes can fluctuate when Youtube does its quarterly/ bi-weekly bot purges, since the accounts that get purged have all of their likes/ dislikes and views removed when they are deleted, so that the bots don't have any disproportionate effect on any of the algorithm parameters. And there are a lot people who go out of their way to churn out bot accounts specifically to downvote political content (either in general or specifically for their opposition/ the party in power.)

And she'll keep seeing it as long as she doesn't update the app on her phone.

Nonetheless, the removal of the like/dislike feature is extremely stupid. I think the focus is on scam videos, or those with false information. For example tutorials/DIY's that tell you to go to on a shady website and download a shady program to fix an error that you got that you found no obvious solution for anywhere else on the Internet.
Forget having your videos showing on other people's feed; these 'tutorial' videos are very specific, and you set out looking for them. It's easy to leave a comment stating that you got a virus/error, or the fix didn't work, but those comments will always exist on even the best of tutorials, they are the outliers - the exceptions to the rule, not the rule. And for most of us who cannot afford to scroll through hundreds of comments and dumbing them down to a basic "It worked!" or "You son of a-... you just caused my computer to catch flames" is not possible for the 99% of us who use YouTube in our spare time, a quick, red flag like a huge dislike ratio, or likes/comments behind hidden would tell us all we need to know without telling us anything - much like an empty browser history.

She still has it on her laptop. Sitting right next to me.

Anyway - dislikes are crap, even with schooling stuff. There are a lot of idiots around who expect that a repair tutorial or something like that will have to be easy as pie no matter what, and if they can't follow or do something stupid they will give blame the tutorial.

Of course, a function filtering for negative comments (that is, comments of dislikers) would be helpful.

From my experience the tutorials that are good have a huge like ratio, and the ones that are crap have a huge dislike ratio (and these are really crap). From there you don't even need to read the comments to know what they are saying. The like/dislike ratios has been a huge timesaver for me on some matters.

Isn't the number of subscribers, the number if views and the percentage of likes to viewers and subscribers enough to get the picture for tutorials?

Tutorial videos in particular tend to get incredibly skewed views-to-subscriber ratios, because most people only watch them when they need them, rather than casually enjoying every tutorial vid that a channel puts out. Because of that, it's kinda hard to know if a tutorial vid has a good or expected ratio.

But because a lot of people who don't subscribe will watch the videos, I suppose it's possible to use the like counter by itself to form a barometer? Because if the tutorial was good and helpful, people who don't subscribe will still tend to give the vid a like. Most videos tend to get watched by ~10-20% of a channel's total subscribers (if the channel is active, at least) and as long as they aren't terrible, tend to get ~2-5% of their subscriber number as likes. If the tutorial has a better ratio than that, it could be a good sign... though people can literally buy likes from companies that churn out bots that will like videos if you pay them. Those are some of the bots that tend to get purged by Youtube with regularity, but they can skew videos for a time.

Huh. So one of the founders of Youtube decided to update pretty much the first video on the platform with his take on this subject.

i've noticed for the past week that the chan has been flooded with spam threads. every board i can see is being spammed with bs. and twitter is set to enforce a no-doxxing rule(translation: you cannot upload videos of people anymore, even if they're committing crimes. you also cannot spread information there without it being shut down. only for specific people or knowledge, i'll bet) soon.

they are trying to suppress everything they can. first they block people from posting and remove posts, then they silence dissent, and now they're targeting how people can gather non-state-approved information and how they can spread it to others.

just like the two active mods are doing here, with the help of their leftist buddies. while val sits silent about it.
