Damn, right in the feels! But no, the post above yours is not dramatic and weird, and in fact raises a point. Which is that goodbye threads boil down to the following:

Attention-seeking, trying to get people to react to you (usually with sympathy).
Feeling self-important, as if you especially mattered to people or your presence made a difference, and that your departure would leave a void.
Giving closure, which only means you made HC a bigger chapter in your life than it should have been and now you think it needs one.

The thing I can understand is the change itself, the reasons leading up to it and what lies ahead in the future. That's just natural. Times change, people change, priorities change. But just move on then. No need for a goodbye thread. It's just dramatic and weird.

How many good HC people have left in silent decency without waving an "official" goodbye? Too many to count. Alcibiades, Storm-Giant, Maurice, and more recently blob2 of the top of my head. People which I interacted with and grew personally fond of. Imagine if they made a thread along the lines of: "Well hey guys, so I guess I made one before but I can't remember, but here's my goodbye thread. HC is not what it used to be, okay bye". Needless to say that my opinion of them would drop.

You've never said goodbye to anyone in your life then? Never had to move to another town or something not being sure if you'll get the chance to see your friends again? Or is that not considered a problem anymore with internet readily available to all?

Real life situations and forum posting are not even remotely on the same level. There's a whole dimension of difference between them, starting with the complexity of each context. Can you comfortably say that a forum goodbye thread comes anywhere close to a heartfelt handshake where you can feel the grip, warmth and pulse of another? To me it's incomparable.

To be clear, I had my fair share of goodbyes. Some pleasant where I would (at least try to) keep in touch and actively communicate, some where I wouldn't go that far and let things cool off naturally, and some where I would actually be glad it was over. Yes, I did move a lot and kept in touch very loosely with one family I met during my university days, which I had grown to consider more than just my landlords. I plan to visit again at some point in the future, but for now that is postponed because of the virus. A bad goodbye was my ex-employer, the kind I would never want to have again. And who knows how many in-between where time just took its toll and things died out. A lot of them, people I considered friends, many colleagues from school, people from all walks of life.

By comparison, forum goodbyes feel shallow, dramatic and weird. They are unnecessary. Why take things so seriously? To me this place now is mostly entertainment, and it has its utility with regards to Heroes games. I'm not placing any special meaning beyond that. None of you here are friends to me. A friend is flesh and blood that stands besides me and shares real life experience and interaction, which leads to a bond. You HC people are lines of text next to an avatar intermingled with figments of my imagination. Whoever thinks that's enough to amount to friendship is in my opinion either delusional or has very poor standards.

With regards to Blizzardboy here, I don't care. He overplayed his act to the point where everything he said did not feel genuine. This thread here makes no exception, and take a look at the posts suspecting another troll to see I'm not the only one. And even if it's true, I won't say goodbye the same way I won't say I'll miss him.

Except that not everything is about you and how you feel. It is not for you to decide how important something is for other people.

I've been here for nearly half my life and spent countless hours on this forum, interacting with other members. Sure, no relationship that I made here is as important as RL friendships, but that doesn't invalidate them. And writing a short goodbye post to give closure to one of those relationships is not overly dramatic.

Yes, not everything is about me and how I feel and I don't get to decide how important something is for other people. I don't know why the word "except" is at the beginning of that since it's pretty much preaching to the choir and does not detract anything from what I said.
Now, with this this teenage breakup line where the girl goes all defensive for no reason out of the way...

Let me remind you that this tangent began with me agreeing with Blizzardboy on how goodbye threads are kind of dramatic, at which point you and Elvin entertained me and you, Geny, asked me questions to which I then replied with what is naturally my own opinion. I didn't start writing it to validate or invalidate anyone's relationship with Blizzardboy or this forum or whatever else, not my goal. What I wanted was to provide you with insight into why it was that I felt that way about forum goodbyes being dramatic, since you seemed curious and maybe wanted to understand my point of view. If you lined up those questions so you could later put the opinion wall between us, then maybe it was your mistake to ask when you weren't really open to have the conversation.

Note that if the thread wasn't dramatic enough before this, it is well on its way now, like a self-fulfilling prophecy. You seem to appreciate this goodbye thread from Blizzardboy, so we could just drop the argument and preserve it in a more appealing form to you if you want to cherish the memory later.

The "except" was supposed to be a continuation of the part of your previous post about how you specifically felt about Bliz's departure. But I forgot that I'm replying in a forum form and it is preferable for every post to be stand-alone if possible, so that's on me.

And as I stand reminded, I will also remind you that while agreeing with Bliz you also asked "what's the point?" which seemed to put a negative spin on your agreement. Then, following Elvin's post, you expanded your statement by berating goodbye threads such as this and the people who make them (attention-seeking, self-important, etc.). So I hope you can understand why I felt you were, in fact, trying to invalidate people's relationship with Blizzardboy or this forum. If it was not so, then I apologize for the misunderstanding.

And lastly, this is Bliz's goodbye thread, I have absolutely no problem with it being filled with drama. I actually think it's fitting in a way.

I like your reply, so I guess it's safe to continue with this clarification: I did put a negative spin on the dramatic aspect of such threads for reasons already mentioned and stand behind it. That is simply the way I see things. It does indeed mean that the poster is in a sense "guilty" of having insincere intentions, that kinda follows. I'm not trying to throw a stone here though, more like raising the point in hopes that someone chimes in with their thoughts and provide something constructive. Who knows, maybe there's a redeeming quality about such threads that I fail to see, or maybe I am just wrong in my analysis.

One other thing, I hope you're not the type of person to seek validation from someone else. I cannot validate something for you because that's something you do yourself. It's a hallmark of maturity in the process of critical thinking. I am not saying the things I say or doing the things I do because I want anyone's approval, I am doing so because I believe they're true and virtuous. If they're not true, then engage the argument or walk away. If you like Blizzardboy and his goodbye thread for your reasons, you really don't need me or anyone else to approve of it. But I would really like to know those reasons.

You liked my reply? Yay! Senpai noticed me!!!

No, don't be alarmed, I have my own set of principals and there aren't many people whose approval is important to me. It is good to see little Stevie acting like a grown up though. You matured so well. *Wipes a tear away*

As for giving reasons, I thought I did. In a bit of a roundabout way, but still. You may not have created any connections with people on this forum and that's fine. But that doesn't mean that you can assume this about everyone else. Some people do form connections on the internet and those people might seem it suitable to make a proper goodbye, the way you would give a heartfelt handshake to someone you might never see again.
