Crowdfunding for new content (Cove?)

Hey guys and gals. I was toying with an idea earlier today that I'm 99.99% certain won't come to anything but I still felt like typing it out.

Have there been any attempts of crowdfunding a somewhat considerable sum of money for larger Heroes 5 content projects? For something more major like a whole new faction or something of the sorts? I'm assuming something like that would be expensive for Heroes 5 as it's 3D but if we can crowdfund enough money...?

Like, I've been jumping between HOMM III HotA and Heroes 5.5 these last few months, absolutely loving both mods, and I thought I'd gladly fork out some money to see Cove in Heroes 5... Like, I'd pay a AAA game's full price for a mod like that without hesitation.

Have there been any attempts at crowdfunding in the past? And, roughly how much would you say we'd need to crowdfund for such a project - the animation, music, etc? I'm assuming it'd be a lot but how awesome would it be if we could do it?

Anyway, I'm new here so I'm sure you've thought about it before and it's been deemed impossible/impractical. Just thought I'd daydream for a second...

you can't crowfund a mod, because you cant legally make money out of somoene elses work. since h5 belongs to ubifart, they hold the IP, they will sue you so hard...

Well, we won't be selling the mod. The mod will be free like any other mod. We'll just crowdfund the labor cost as, I'm assuming, now one would take on the task of animating a 3D town and faction for free.

Would something like that be illegal? As far as I know, you can crowdfund for virtually anything, including an artist's labor. As long as you're not selling someone else's property, which we won't be doing, everything should be above board.

The problem is you're trying to crowdfund for something that would be based on an existing IP, that Ubisoft owns. You simply can't get around that fact, and this is what kills the idea from the very start.

Even if you want to ignore that, and say you just want to pay the labor, well you can't do that either, cause who gets to decide what would be fair price for the labor? What you'd claim is fair price for just the labor and nothing else, Ubisoft will argue in court that it's people making a clear profit.

I think I've heard of cases of mod makers accepting private donations through personal Patreon/PayPal (instead of an account tied to the project), with there being no mention that donating to them would in any way help the project being worked on. So basically you're paying their living expenses, and they may or may not work on the mod, as there would be no obligation on their part to do anything.
But I'm sure even this would be highly questionable, and I wouldn't recommend anyone risk it.

I understand the sentiment, and I've seen it repeated numerous times in multiple modding communities. But it always ends with: don't try it unless you specifically want lawyers on your doorstep.

i..again, even if your not selling it, your not allowed to accept money FOR IT. its a very tricky sort of question...Technically, the answer would be no, but since the mod itself will be released for free (the money is for the artists and coders or so it seems...) than is not that different from the usual "donate if you like" and so should be legit.

that being said, your best way is to get to know those skills yourself. since, i don't think you should tempt yourself with this.

Yea, makes sense... Pity... I would looooove to see Cove in H5... imagine the Haspids in 3D... Or the town itself!

The Patreon loophole sounds workable but probably not for a larger scale project...

1. I trust you're not trolling me. Obviously, I can't just up and learn the dozen new skills that'd be required to create a mod of such magnitude. Different people have different skills, that's why we live in a society.

2. I play and fund many different games, I don't see what that has to do with Heroes...

Anyway, I guess the whole topic is a moot point, sorry for wasting everyone's time...

I can double down on @antipaladin thought. Being involved in the work is even better than playing.

Regarding crowdfunding it sounds great but Ubisoft will not allow it in any way. May be for some little project based on donations will work but as soon as it starts to grow Ubisoft will axe it.

You can't make something like an indiegogo

however you can set up a donation page
Moddb allows this, for example.

I would love it if someone did a Notch and funded/freed a Heroes game like he did with Age of Wonders. Even if it was just to secure the future of HoTA and ERA.
