Starting bonuses discussion

Starting bonuses are part of nearly every game, yet I couldn't really find a topic related to them, so let's have one here.

By starting bonuses I'm of course referring the third choice you make with starting town and hero.

The current bonuses are:

- A random Treasure artifact
- 500-1000 gold
- 5-10 Wood and Stone each for Castle/Necropolis/Stronghold/Fortress
- 3-6 Crystals/Gems/Sulfur/Mercury for Rampart/Tower/Dungeon(+Cove)/Inferno and Conflux

Personally, I've always felt the artifact option being the go-to route by a thumb of rule, occasionally gold can be an option, and the resource option has never really hit me.

So,

1) Is there balance between each option and if not, should there be?
2) Should the towns that only have wood and ore as starting bonuses also get access of an option for special resources?
3)... and vice versa, should the towns that now have special resources, also have an option for the basic ones?
4) Is it good that when choosing the artifact, it can be any treasure level artifact, or should the be some sort of list you could (or perhaps couldn't) have as a starting item?
5) Should the amount of gold or other resources be increased to make them more appealing choices?
6) Should there be more options for starting bonuses, say experience, units, prebuild buildings...? You can also list your own ideas here.
7) Maybe a question/topic you came up relating to this discussion?

I am pretty happy with the starting bonusses.
I usually pick random starting bonus, but getting a starting artifact is always kind of interesting, it could be something useless like the Bird of Perception or Pendant of Death, when you are not playing Necro. I think that's fair though, you can always sacrifice or sell a potentially useless artifact or give it to another hero.

Getting resources can be useful, for example as Rampart getting crystals can be good, but of course it depends on difficulty and how rich the map is.

On some templates i like to take the resources as Castle, because the wood mine may be far from the starting town.

When playing on 200% I take the resources. Otherwise I always take the artefact.

Gold is easy to come by from chests and towns, so I never pick it as starting bonus.

HotA is dead by now, this can only be done in Era or VCMI, so I hardly see a point in going about options for resources, etc but none the less...

Artifact option is way better, specially if you restart till you get one of the good ones. That said, most artifacts are true garbage while at least two are often in my main's equipment during final battles (Still Eye of the Dragon & Necklace of Swiftness).

What I would prefer was to be able to offer crazy bonus (like in the campaigns) to my own maps, like:
- start with Earth Book;
- start with 15 Sharpshooters;
- start with one Angel.

but this is doable in Era already, Sal does it in Tew IV.

Hmm I made SoD campaigns, final map and difficulty level offered Black Orb, Bow of the Sharpshooter or Red Orb.. Your largest troops from beginning to the end, you are Necromancer, but the last map shows legion or more legion Phoenixes, and your last collect liches in the last campaign or enemy with 9k legion +7lvl dragons eat your Phoenixes until you and enemy meet in landscape or his town.. Ok I've not tested, but broken motherboard.. For me, the loss isn't a problem, but getting through the campaign is more important..

Ok Hourglass.. Bonuses don't affect me, but I love ore/wood..

1. I think the Gold bonus is kind of underwhelming, which brings us to your point 5)

2 and 3: Perhaps

4. I think it's fine as it is.

5. Yes.

6. Yup. Like in the campaigns.

There is no ballance.
Random artifacts are very problematic because major of them are practicaly useless do may be risic to gdy it. Wood ode and gołd you have near city. Best is rare resource you need to high level buildings. Often is hard to gdy mine. And some of them give you 7lvl building one week faster.  Its big boost eg. 2 Angels more...
Hard to ballance these bonuses.
And we have bonus like pack of monsters too! But 1lvl usually.
