Fallen Of the Depth [VCMI]

"Battle can be endured with strength, but it can be won with spirit. Here, there was a lack of both... Well, not everyone is worthy of remembrance." With these words, Sir Lars turned his steed around and, with undisguised pride on his face, left the graveyard behind him.

In taverns, there was always a buzz. It was both a place for communal feasting and sharing information. Many a tavern keeper had heard tales of remarkable deeds and conquests from a drunken wanderer, who was currently downing his fourth mug of too-strong liquor. There were also travelers from distant lands. The most characteristic were those who, at their own risk, ventured alone through the underground. At first glance, they caused unease, but it was always around them that the largest crowd of onlookers gathered. It was they who chattered about the wind, which in its gusts carried old songs about the great empire, hidden deep in the mossy labyrinths, where not even the sun reached. They spoke of the great emptiness, which, once unleashed from captivity, would bury everything.

"And who would have thought. Look Tekla. Here's what we managed to create out of nothing. My brothers and I, placing stone upon stone, have built this beautiful, hidden home from the world. Our shared home Tekla, a refuge for all these creatures. A beautiful green haven - Casamate."
Morax didn't even attempt to conceal his emotion as he looked at the walls of the great empire he had managed to create. These beautiful walls of the grand council building. Right next to it, the majestic build, from which whispered incantations could be heard. "And they continue to deepen their knowledge of runic magic?" "Yes Tekla, we don't know what dangers we'll have to face. After all, the corridors lead far into void." Suddenly, the two passersby were splashed with water. "Sorry!" exclaimed a young Hornlet, waving to them. ""I'm still learning to aim properly, I'm not very good at it." To which Morax replied with a laugh - "No worries. We all started somewhere. Just gather the arrows from the muck. The Kappas will be very displeased if they stumble upon them." Tekla wiped her bony face from the water, and together with Morax, they headed to the castle building for rest.

We are [me and my love Mora] thrilled to present to you a new modification being created on VCMI. It will tell the tale of an ancient underground empire, forgotten by time and all creatures. Fallen of the Depth will introduce new terrain, a town, units, and... Well, you'll soon see for yourselves. Stay tuned!
And now, as a little sneak peek, you can take a look at a few screenshots from our work. [Still a work in progress ]

It's not the first time we see custom faction for a single map or campaign.

VCMI engine shovels all the technical issues away, helping creative modders to freely add new content. No arcane scripting or hex editing - now the vast majority of work is to prepare nice graphics.

Most vcmi towns do not look this good tho. This looks great both units and town screen, good job so far!

First of all, congratulations! I am actually interested in seeing this project develop and reach completion.

While not all graphics might be perfect (I do agree with the feedback on AcidCave regarding creature graphics), I have to praise the fact that the town screen actually looks well. It's harder to get right than creatures and other things.

Otherwise, people love to see other people analyze their stuff, so here we go. =p

Screenshot 1:
- Mossy underground walls, that's neat. I can also see that they have a transition with regular ones, on bottom right.
- Purple mushroom decoration.
- Mossy terrain, this looks decent.
- New mountain set, based on Subterranean ones? These ones are a bit blurry and vague.
- There is a creature on the upper right, guarding a Parapet. I'll call them "Orchids" for now (even though they look more like carnivorous plants).
- The fortifications on the adv map look WIP. They feel a bit too plastic-like. The hero sprite is hard to read.
- Nice, a mossy Crypt on the middle-right.
- Middle-left: I see a Harpy Hag guarding a journal/parchment and what's presumably the dwelling of the "Turtles" on the bottom right. The post-processing sharpening is visible on the dwelling (so maybe render it at higher resolution and do not use sharpening at all, or very little).
- Right to the left, there's a floating fungus (Fungocullus?) guarding what I believe might be the Kobold (?) dwelling. This is my favorite building thus far.
- On the middle-bottom-left, there is a snail shell structure. It has no flag, so I assume it's not a creature dwelling. It is also too big to be a Seer Hut.
- The bottom-left of the building there is some sort of "vague forest/natural creature" druid. Not criticizing, "vague forest/natural creature" is literally a creature trope. You can see such things in the likes of Pettson and Findus, Moomin universe and so on.
- Bottom right, there is a Kobold thug guarding what's presumably a dwelling, given the flag and architecture. I'm not sure what could live here other than perhaps the "druid", at least from the creatures shown. Ah, right, maybe the T3 "mouse" creatures I see in screenshot 2?

Screenshot 2:
- Runestones, there's just a slight bit of a Norse atmosphere here, mixed in with other tropes.
- The cottage is very cozy.
- Are those targets the horde of the pond dwelling? Do the turtles shoot, if they are recruited from there? However, given that their icon does not appear, it would be more logical to conclude that the "mice" are recruited from the pond dwelling.
- Mage Guild blurred on the top right? Neat, using a design that starts from the roof.
- The Capitol building looks nice and very strongly reminds me of Courtyard's old Capitol (well, the released one). The author eventually wants to redo his differently anyway, so no worries there.
- Nice houses all-around.
- The fortifications have the same plastic-y look like in the adv map, but less so. In a way, this reminds me of the style of some retro games, but I don't mean it in a bad way.

Screenshot 3:
- "Orchids", Umber Hulks and Fungoculli, both basic and upgraded versions.

Other impressions:
- Personally, I'm not sure how much the concept matches H3's philosophy, but honestly, at the end of the day, people make the towns they want to and love, according to the rules they prefer, and I'm no exception. So I'll overlook this. It does have a good vibe, too.
- Now it's time to make silly lineup "predictions" =p
T1: Kobolds
T2: "Druids"
T3: "Mice"
T4: Fungoculli
T5: Umber Hulks
T6: "Orchids"
T7: "Turtle"

My prediction is probably very scuffed and cringe lol, maybe the T3 is also shown on the map elsewhere and I didn't know it, and the "turtle" is thus not the T7, and the T7 was never shown.
Either way, these are my first thoughts on it. I'm glad that more people are picking up H3 modding the proper way, with 3D models and all, and I wish you and Mora good luck on this endeavor!
